Written Answers — Department of Transport, Tourism and Sport: Departmental Expenditure (16 Jan 2014)

Leo Varadkar: Photography costs incurred by my Department are on its website at the link below and this information is updated quarterly.  It is the policy of the Department of Transport, Tourism and Sport that photography costs are kept to a minimum and services are provided in-house by staff.  Where services are contracted, best value is sought and a number...

Written Answers — Department of Transport, Tourism and Sport: Road Network (16 Jan 2014)

Leo Varadkar: The planning, design and implementation of individual national road projects is a matter for the National Roads Authority (NRA) under the Roads Acts 1993 to 2007 in conjunction with the local authorities concerned. Noting the above position, I have referred the Deputy’s question to the NRA for direct reply.  Please advise my private office if you don’t receive a reply...

Written Answers — Department of Transport, Tourism and Sport: Departmental Bodies (16 Jan 2014)

Leo Varadkar: The information requested by the Deputy is set out in my reply to Dáil Question 418 of the 19th December 2013.  The only update since then is that Bantry Bay Harbour Commissioners were amalgamated into Cork Port Company on 1st January 2014. It is not possible to quantify the savings from rationalisation until the detailed arrangements in...

Written Answers — Department of Transport, Tourism and Sport: Departmental Expenditure (16 Jan 2014)

Leo Varadkar: The funding of Irish Charities is not a function of my Department. However through the Sports Capital Programme, funding is provided to sports, voluntary and community organisations, some of which would have charitable status,  to assist with the provision of sports infrastructure and towards the purchase of sports equipment. My Department also provides grants to some organisations...

Road Traffic (No. 2) Bill 2013: Report and Final Stages (15 Jan 2014)

Leo Varadkar: This is a very good Bill. It will help us to achieve further advances in road safety. As Deputies will be aware, we had an increase in the number of road deaths last year for the first time in several years and we are keen to turn that around in the year ahead. I thank those in the Opposition in particular for their co-operation and for continuing the all-party approach when it comes to...

Road Traffic (No. 2) Bill 2013: Report and Final Stages (15 Jan 2014)

Leo Varadkar: On Deputy Ellis's question, it makes no difference whether the odometer records miles or kilometres. While odometers in cars purchased in recent years record kilometres, older ones record miles. The term "mileage" is still used in respect of claims for travel expenses even though the distance travelled is recorded in kilometres.

Road Traffic (No. 2) Bill 2013: Report and Final Stages (15 Jan 2014)

Leo Varadkar: No, definitely not.

Road Traffic (No. 2) Bill 2013: Report and Final Stages (15 Jan 2014)

Leo Varadkar: There is no reference in the amendment to "mileage" or "kilometres". To avoid confusion on that issue, the amendment states only that there should be no interference with an odometer.

Road Traffic (No. 2) Bill 2013: Report and Final Stages (15 Jan 2014)

Leo Varadkar: Deputy Dooley's question has much to do with the law of unintended consequences. We do not believe that this provision can be used other than for the purpose intended. However, we cannot know that for sure. As a Road Traffic Bill is introduced pretty much every year, if an issue does arise the Bill can be amended. I do not foresee any issues arising but will keep a watchful eye on the...

Leo Varadkar: The Government decided in May 2011 to centralise the driver licence service, under the Road Safety Authority (RSA), following an examination of the options which found that a centralised system would offer enhanced security and consistency, and be more efficient and cost-effective. The requirement for all EU Member States to introduce a plastic card licence in January 2013 was...
