- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Education and Skills: Leaving Certificate Calculated Grades 2020 and Preparations for Leaving Certificate 2021: Department of Education (10 Nov 2020)
Donnchadh Ó Laoghaire: I thank the witnesses for attending this afternoon. We all know the Department was left in an invidious position earlier in the year regarding the public health crisis and the exams. It has been my view, and I communicated this to the former Minister for Education and Skills, Deputy McHugh, that using calculated grades was not the right approach. Unfortunately, students who worked extremely...
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Education and Skills: Leaving Certificate Calculated Grades 2020 and Preparations for Leaving Certificate 2021: Department of Education (10 Nov 2020)
Donnchadh Ó Laoghaire: I will clarify that what I have in mind is something to the effect of establishing the points that would have existed without the error. The students who achieved those points could then be allocated those courses.

- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Education and Skills: Leaving Certificate Calculated Grades 2020 and Preparations for Leaving Certificate 2021: Department of Education (10 Nov 2020)
Donnchadh Ó Laoghaire: On the point raised by Senator Seery Kearney regarding the HPAT, I do not think it should be that conditional, given the year it has been. Students should just be allowed to carry the HPAT forward. On the November examinations, there are a few difficulties with them that I do not quite understand. Question choice has been expanded for those who will sit the leaving certificate in 2021....
- Education (Admission to Schools) (Amendment) Bill 2020: Second Stage [Private Members] (5 Nov 2020)
Donnchadh Ó Laoghaire: Leaving aside the Bill, I want to mention how the Government is dealing with Opposition legislation. As far as I know, not a single Opposition Bill has been accepted without some amendment by the Government. So many good Bills have come before the Dáil since the Government was formed. What is happening speaks to me of an Administration that is not willing to listen to the Opposition,...

- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Education and Skills: Bullying in Schools: Discussion (5 Nov 2020)
Donnchadh Ó Laoghaire: I thank the doctors for coming in. It has provided great insight. I suppose, while we are not directly involved in how schools deal with this on a daily basis, upset parents come to our constituency offices. I recently had contact with a family of a child who has been through two secondary schools and is currently seeking home schooling. It has a profound, traumatic impact. It can be a...
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Education and Skills: Bullying in Schools: Discussion (5 Nov 2020)
Donnchadh Ó Laoghaire: I want to make an observation and perhaps the witnesses would like to respond. It seems that, in the area of social media, gaming is a conduit for forms of bullying, not just in regard to how people play but also with regard to the gamer-to-gamer chat. I thank the witnesses for attending today.
- Finance Bill 2020: Second Stage (4 Nov 2020)
Donnchadh Ó Laoghaire: I echo the points made by Deputy O'Reilly on the CRSS. It is important that as many as possible businesses are included. It is probably not the scheme that we would like in that it is effectively lending businesses their own money. We would rather have seen some sort of grant scheme. That said, some businesses will benefit from it, which I welcome and I encourage them to apply, but I ask...
