National Theatre. (24 Jun 2008)

Olivia Mitchell: Question 64: To ask the Minister for Arts, Sport and Tourism the progress on the provision of a new building for the National Theatre; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [24543/08]

National Theatre. (24 Jun 2008)

Olivia Mitchell: This is one of those sagas that highlights the difficulty the Government has in driving any major project to completion. It was in the programme for Government in 2002 to celebrate the centenary of the Abbey Theatre in 2004. In 2006 the Ceann Comhairle, who was then Minister for Arts, Sport and Tourism, approved the design competition. More than a year later the then Minister, Deputy...

National Theatre. (24 Jun 2008)

Olivia Mitchell: I realise we are running out of time. The Minister spent a long time saying nothing to me. A PPP may no longer be a realistic proposition. As he rightly said, it is a complex specialised building. Is it realistic that the Government will find a partner to provide a theatre on this site or will we need to find another method of funding? Will the whole project go back to the drawing board?...

National Theatre. (24 Jun 2008)

Olivia Mitchell: That is my point. They are not designing the building, only a competition.

National Theatre. (24 Jun 2008)

Olivia Mitchell: By when do the designs have to be submitted?

National Theatre. (24 Jun 2008)

Olivia Mitchell: The Minister is allowing six months to design the building while the Department got two years to design the competition.

National Theatre. (24 Jun 2008)

Olivia Mitchell: I see no opening night in sight.

National Theatre. (24 Jun 2008)

Olivia Mitchell: That is precisely my point. The Minister is giving them six months while his Department had more than two years.

Sports Funding. (24 Jun 2008)

Olivia Mitchell: Question 65: To ask the Minister for Arts, Sport and Tourism when it is envisaged that the second round of the local authority swimming pool grant scheme will be initiated; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [24544/08]

Sports Funding. (24 Jun 2008)

Olivia Mitchell: I thank the Minister. I submitted this question because I was shocked to find out through a freedom of information request that the then Minister for Finance, the Taoiseach, Deputy Cowen, refused the Minister's predecessor permission to announce a new round. This will come as devastating news to the local authorities around the country which, far from providing new pools, are closing pools...

Sports Funding. (24 Jun 2008)

Olivia Mitchell: Those were mainly refurbishments.

Sports Funding. (24 Jun 2008)

Olivia Mitchell: The money was nominated in the national development plan but has been refused by the former Minister for Finance, now the Taoiseach. Clearly this is not a priority.

Sport and Recreational Development. (24 Jun 2008)

Olivia Mitchell: It was a Government decision.

Arts in Education. (24 Jun 2008)

Olivia Mitchell: I will not go into any great detail on this issue because it has been discussed somewhat with Deputy Upton's priority question. I would point out that arts in education was a Department of Arts, Sport and Tourism initiative. Apparently, the Minister's predecessor's last word on the subject was that he had referred back to the Arts Council for practical recommendations as to how it should be...

Written Answers — Human Rights Issues: Human Rights Issues (18 Jun 2008)

Olivia Mitchell: Question 115: To ask the Minister for Foreign Affairs when he last met with a member of the Chinese authority or its representative; if the issue of Tibet was raised; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [23724/08]

Lisbon Treaty: Statements (Resumed) (18 Jun 2008)

Olivia Mitchell: Are the remaining five minutes to be shared?

Lisbon Treaty: Statements (Resumed) (18 Jun 2008)

Olivia Mitchell: I am sharing my time with Deputies Allen and Burke but I am not sure it is worthwhile. All politicians must accept some responsibility for the outcome of the referendum. On the face of it, the treaty was rejected but the vote was also a message to the Establishment telling us that we were never really persuaded of the intrinsic value of the European project and that we never really...

Written Answers — State Airports: State Airports (17 Jun 2008)

Olivia Mitchell: Question 121: To ask the Minister for Transport if further meetings have taken place since January 2008 with the US authorities with a view to establishing a pre-clearance facility at Dublin and Shannon Airports for US bound passengers; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [18410/08]

Written Answers — EU Directives: EU Directives (17 Jun 2008)

Olivia Mitchell: Question 399: To ask the Minister for Health and Children if the European food supplements directive has been transposed into Irish law; if all aspects of the directive have been implemented; if not, when this will happen; and if she will clarify the extent to which the permitted quantities in health supplements will be altered. [23591/08]

Written Answers — Swimming Pool Projects: Swimming Pool Projects (17 Jun 2008)

Olivia Mitchell: Question 534: To ask the Minister for Arts, Sport and Tourism the amount of the €184 million committed under the National Development Plan 2007 to 2013 that will be required or the maximum that could be required to complete the current round for swimming pool grant aided works; if it is anticipated that all applicants will proceed to construction; when it is envisaged the current round...
