- Seanad: Order of Business (15 Dec 2016)
Frank Feighan: I agree with Senator Mac Lochlainn about Jadotville. I was probably one of the first Members of the Oireachtas who highlighted the fact the men were forgotten about. I was delighted the Government recognised their heroism. I was in Custume Barracks to see the men being presented certificates. I agree they should be recognised in a much more significant fashion. The day in Custume...
- Seanad: Order of Business (14 Dec 2016)
Frank Feighan: We expect the same for our Bills.
- Seanad: Order of Business (14 Dec 2016)
Frank Feighan: We live in very interesting times. Two weeks ago Ms Nicola Sturgeon, MSP, the First Minister of Scotland, was here and everybody was urging Scotland to vote for independence. That was wonderful and on Monday the British House of Lords launched the Brexit: UK-Irish Relations report in Dublin and London. The report was very practical and measured and it showed an interest in Irish-UK...
- Seanad: Order of Business (13 Dec 2016)
Frank Feighan: I also welcome the report by the House of Lords on the implications of Brexit. It is fascinating that this report was simultaneously announced in Dublin and the UK. The report argues that the British political establishment misunderstands the nature of free trade and overstates the negotiating position of the UK. The report also argues that it is a huge challenge for Ireland, the peace...
- Seanad: Order of Business (8 Dec 2016)
Frank Feighan: I also congratulate T.K. Whitaker on his 100th birthday. He is the architect of modern Ireland. He got rid of the protectionist policies and effectively opened up free trade. He was Secretary General of the Department of Finance having joined the Civil Service in 1934. He was named Irishman of the century in 2002. I thank him for his work, now that he is 100 years young.
- Seanad: Order of Business (7 Dec 2016)
Frank Feighan: He is on his way to the airport.
- Seanad: Order of Business (7 Dec 2016)
Frank Feighan: He had to be at the airport at 5 o'clock this morning.
- Seanad: Order of Business (7 Dec 2016)
Frank Feighan: He is at the airport.
- Seanad: Order of Business (7 Dec 2016)
Frank Feighan: I share Senator Daly's concern regarding the Orkambi situation. I saw "Claire Byrne Live" last Monday night and all contributors, including taxpayers, doctors, and people waiting to get Orkambi, were very measured and very concerned. I saw a tweet from the Minister for Health, Deputy Simon Harris, at 5 a.m. While one might ask what he was doing at 5 a.m., the Minister was at the airport on...
- Seanad: Order of Business (7 Dec 2016)
Frank Feighan: It is a Limerick dog and one that has won huge prizes and is seemingly worth over €1 million. It shows the complexities of crime in our country when the Garda must arrest four men with guns over the kidnap of a dog. It sounds like something out of a comic strip. I praise the gardaí and all concerned in ensuring this was stopped.
- Seanad: Order of Business (6 Dec 2016)
Frank Feighan: Anschluss.
- Seanad: Order of Business (6 Dec 2016)
Frank Feighan: I note with concern that there is a decision to help increase the price of a postage stamp. The Minister has asked the Cabinet to remove the price cap in order that An Post can continue to carry out its five-day postal service. Last week I sent a letter to another European country that had to go overnight and it cost me €33. An Post is under pressure but it should not be subsidised...
- Seanad: Order of Business (6 Dec 2016)
Frank Feighan: We do not need that many.
- Seanad: Order of Business (6 Dec 2016)
Frank Feighan: Many Deputies and Senators do not realise the envelopes were paid for by the State four years in advance. We got a discount that was next to nothing.
- Seanad: Order of Business (6 Dec 2016)
Frank Feighan: If anybody operating on behalf of the State is to pay money upfront for pre-paid envelopes, he or she should at least get a better discount that would help ensure taxpayers' money is well spent.
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on the Implementation of the Good Friday Agreement: Cross-Border Road Infrastructure: Discussion (1 Dec 2016)
Frank Feighan: I agree with Deputy Smith. I was Chairman of this committee for a number of years. This issue has been discussed at every second or third meeting of the committee and the witnesses have our full support. We have gone on site visits. We must do all we can do politically on both sides of the Border to progress this because it is urgent. It is absolutely correct to state the north-west...
- Seanad: Order of Business (1 Dec 2016)
Frank Feighan: I pay tribute to be Irish Hospice Foundation and the various hospice groups around the country, which provide the best end-of-life care to patients. Many people are not aware that the Irish Hospice Foundation, Mayo Roscommon Hospice and various other hospices raise money and build vital facilities. They work very closely with the Department of Health. Yesterday, I saw at first hand the...
- Seanad: Address to Seanad Éireann by Ms Nicola Sturgeon (29 Nov 2016)
Frank Feighan: The First Minister is very welcome to the Seanad on this special and historic day. I thank her for opening a Scottish Government office in Dublin. It is a great move. Her representative, John Webster, is a great advocate for all that is good in Scotland and Ireland. The SNP went from six to 59 seats in the last election. Was this a vote for Scottish independence or for the party's...
- Seanad: Order of Business (29 Nov 2016)
Frank Feighan: I agree with Senator Gallagher's call for a debate on the issuing of Irish passports. Over the weekend I attended the British-Irish Parliamentary Assembly meeting in Cardiff. The First Minister of Wales was happy to say that his wife and two siblings had Irish passports. The ambassador, H.E. Mr. Dan Mulhall, said there was a huge upsurge in applications for Irish passports. It is timely...
- Seanad: Commencement Matters: Northern Ireland (17 Nov 2016)
Frank Feighan: I thank the Minister of State for attending. On a visit last year to two integrated schools in Northern Ireland as Chairman of the Joint Committee on the Implementation of the Good Friday Agreement, I saw at first hand the success of bringing children and staff from Catholic and Protestant traditions, as well as those of other faiths or none, together in one school. The two schools were...
