Joint Committee on Tourism, Culture, Arts, Sport And Media: Engagement with Chairperson to the Board of RTÉ (19 Apr 2023)

Timmy Dooley: I welcome Ms Ní Raghallaigh and Dr. Mathews. I congratulate Ms Ní Raghallaigh on taking on the role as chairperson of RTÉ at a time it is pretty difficult to get people to take on those kinds of onerous positions given the criticism they come in for when they step forward. She deserves recognition and credit for taking on that role and, as others have said, bringing her very...

Joint Committee on Tourism, Culture, Arts, Sport And Media: Engagement with Chairperson to the Board of RTÉ (19 Apr 2023)

Timmy Dooley: Back at you. To conclude on that, is the biggest challenge for the next three years just money or is it technological?

Joint Committee on Tourism, Culture, Arts, Sport And Media: Engagement with Chairperson to the Board of RTÉ (19 Apr 2023)

Timmy Dooley: I conclude by offering my congratulations and best wishes to Kevin Bakhurst. I served on a committee he came before on many occasions. He demonstrated his abilities at that time and I am sure he will do so again. I thank Ms Ní Raghallaigh and the board for the work they do on behalf of the public service.

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport, Tourism and Sport: Shannon Foynes Port Company: Chairperson Designate (Resumed) (19 Apr 2023)

Timmy Dooley: I welcome Mr. McGarry. Unlike some other appointees who come before various committees, he has had the experience of five years in post. Perhaps he will identify the greatest challenges he has faced over those five years and what he sees as the challenges for the forthcoming period. With regard to time, I note that Mr. McGarry listed his series of other interests and he identified other...

Timmy Dooley: What does it do?

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport, Tourism and Sport: Shannon Foynes Port Company: Chairperson Designate (Resumed) (19 Apr 2023)

Timmy Dooley: Given Mr. McGarry's executive role and his other board appointments, does he feel that he has the time available to continue in this role. He clearly believes that, but perhaps be will comment further.

Timmy Dooley: That is what I was coming at. I have to be diplomatic on it.

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport, Tourism and Sport: Shannon Foynes Port Company: Chairperson Designate (Resumed) (19 Apr 2023)

Timmy Dooley: So Mr. McGarry sees this as an interim role.

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport, Tourism and Sport: Shannon Foynes Port Company: Chairperson Designate (Resumed) (19 Apr 2023)

Timmy Dooley: I have no doubt about that. I was just concerned that this was going to run in parallel with the other chairmanship for another four or five years, which would put additional pressure on Mr. McGarry's effort for the region. Will Mr. McGarry talk to us about the challenges that he and the port have faced. What does Mr. McGarry envisage as being the challenges for the board over the coming...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport, Tourism and Sport: Shannon Foynes Port Company: Chairperson Designate (Resumed) (19 Apr 2023)

Timmy Dooley: That is good to hear. I have regular interaction with Pat Keating, the chief executive, at this committee and because of where I live and the area I seek to represent. From a public service point of view, he is one of the finest in terms of the work he does, the vision he has shown and the effort he has put in. That is obviously a really important part of driving that forward. I attended...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport, Tourism and Sport: Shannon Foynes Port Company: Chairperson Designate (Resumed) (19 Apr 2023)

Timmy Dooley: I had a look at the board recently. I was attending that event and I had a look at the CVs of the people. Mr. McGarry has an excellent board there. There are people with diverse backgrounds and phenomenal experience. The company is well set for the future.

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport, Tourism and Sport: Shannon Foynes Port Company: Chairperson Designate (Resumed) (19 Apr 2023)

I wish Mr. McGarry well with the remainder of his board appointment and his move on to pastures green.

Seanad: An tOrd Gnó - Order of Business (18 Apr 2023)

Timmy Dooley: I ask the Leader to organise a debate, at the earliest possible opportunity, to discuss the issue of water infrastructure throughout the country. Many parts of rural Ireland are serviced by old iron or metal water pipes, which are well past their sell-by date and, in many cases, have started to leak and crack. There is also old asbestos piping throughout that pipe network. Ever since the...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Climate Action: Pre-Legislative Scrutiny of the General Scheme of the Energy (Windfall Gains in the Energy Sector) Bill 2023 (18 Apr 2023)

Timmy Dooley: I thank Ms Sikow-Magny for her contribution. In terms of where the market is at, we understand that the wholesale price of gas is at a pre-war level and yet consumers and businesses here pay significantly higher prices for electricity. To some extent, electricity suppliers make the argument that they had hedged their positions but my understanding is that a lot of that is washed through...
