Diarmuid Wilson: I would like to join with other colleagues in paying tribute to the late Martin J. O'Toole, and would like to welcome the various generations of his family to the Visitors Gallery. I would also like to welcome the iar-Chathaoirleach of this House, Rory Kiely, who was a very close friend of Martin Joe, and Deputy Dara Calleary. I did not have the privilege of serving in the Oireachtas with...
- Seanad: Order of Business (27 Feb 2014)
Diarmuid Wilson: I thank the Deputy Leader for confirming that it is not only Labour Party policy but Fine Gael policy for rural Ireland to be discriminated against with regard to representation at local government level. I have a question for the Leader and perhaps the Deputy Leader could give her opinion on it. Is it the policy of this Government to close rural Ireland altogether?
- Seanad: Order of Business (27 Feb 2014)
Diarmuid Wilson: Is that the policy? I would be grateful for an answer. I congratulate Senator Quinn on his excellent Bill, as it shows what this House can do when we put our minds to it. I also commend my colleague, Senator Mary White.

Diarmuid Wilson: I support fully what Senator O'Neill said. I also support my colleague Senator Ó Domhnaill, who raised this matter on the Adjournment last week. As Senator O'Neill said, the HGV Road User Levy Act comes into effect on 1 April. This means lorries travelling from the Republic to Northern Ireland or to the United Kingdom will have to pay £10 per day, which is totally unacceptable....

Diarmuid Wilson: Last Friday night Mr. Aogán Ó Fearghail became the 38th Uachtaráin-Tofa of Cumann Lúthchleas Gael, and this time next year he will take over as the 38th president of the GAA. In doing so, he will become the first Cavan man to hold this position in the 130-year history of the GAA. He will be only the seventh Ulster man to hold the position and one of only four people in...
- Seanad: Order of Business (25 Feb 2014)
Diarmuid Wilson: He is a very proud Cavan and Droim Dhúin Éire Óg man and he is a proud Gael. I take this opportunity to wish him well in his presidency. Coming from Cavan, we are guaranteed one thing.

Diarmuid Wilson: From next year a Cavan man will hold aloft the Sam Maguire Cup for at least three years in a row. We hope that for one of those years at least, he will present the cup to the Cavan senior football team, which is doing very well.
- Seanad: Order of Business (25 Feb 2014)
Diarmuid Wilson: On Sunday evening, along with Oireachtas colleagues, Deputies Joe O'Reilly and Brendan Smith, I attended a reception at GAA headquarters in Cavan at Kingspan Breffni Park to welcome the president-elect. During his address he said the GAA was a community of volunteers and that community was at the heart of everything we did. He went on to refer to the four Fs - fixtures, finance, facilities...

- Seanad: Order of Business (20 Feb 2014)
Diarmuid Wilson: I commend Senator Mulcahy for his open and honest contribution on domestic violence that he gave at yesterday’s justice committee. Fianna Fáil joins with other Members in offering support to the Senator and to legislation, whether amending or new, to criminalise this quiet act going on across the country. It not only affects women and children but also men, a point some forget....
- Seanad: Order of Business (20 Feb 2014)
Diarmuid Wilson: One example given yesterday was the new driving licence. An Post tendered for it but was not able to compete with private enterprise because some of the main criteria were not about accessibility or number of outlets but cost. As a result, people in larger counties have to travel up to 80 to 90 miles to a centre to apply for a driving licence. This is not acceptable. Will the Deputy...
