Joint Oireachtas Committee on Health: Closure of Owenacurra Centre: Engagement with HSE (14 Dec 2021)

David Stanton: Is it true to say that no resident will be moved out against his or her will?

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Health: Closure of Owenacurra Centre: Engagement with HSE (14 Dec 2021)

David Stanton: In other words, if people want to stay in the centre they can do so. They might not be able to do so indefinitely but there is no major pressure on people to move. The HSE is having discussions and there are reduced numbers in the centre now. In Mr. Fitzgerald's view, is the centre safe at the moment? That is an issue that has come up time and again.

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Health: Closure of Owenacurra Centre: Engagement with HSE (14 Dec 2021)

David Stanton: Regarding the long-term plans for the site, Mr. Fitzgerald stated that the HSE is in negotiations with the county council to build supported housing there. Would those be own-door state-of-the-art modern facilities?

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Health: Closure of Owenacurra Centre: Engagement with HSE (14 Dec 2021)

David Stanton: I have one final question because my time is up. I am sorry about this. Is planning permission needed for the day service provision that is being put in place?

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Health: Closure of Owenacurra Centre: Engagement with HSE (14 Dec 2021)

David Stanton: I welcome the moves towards an independent centre for day care. I always felt it was wrong that people were walking through the Owenacurra centre, which was the home of residents. Various people were walking into the centre on various days. Physically separating the two services is a good idea and I look forward to our guests letting us know where that day care centre will be located and...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Health: Closure of Owenacurra Centre: Engagement with HSE (14 Dec 2021)

David Stanton: Could the HSE reimagine and repurpose its plans in respect of sheltered housing or supported housing on the current site? If I heard our guests correctly, a ten-bed unit could fit on the site. Could that be considered? It may be possible to provide a high-support hostel or a continuing care unit there. If the HSE does so, it will have alleviated many of the concerns and fears of members...

Ceisteanna Eile - Other Questions: Work Permits (9 Dec 2021)

David Stanton: I join my colleagues in asking the Minister of State to look at ways of streamlining the system. I have met farmers who are facing into a very busy period at present with milking, cows calving and so forth. It is a 24-7 job with health and safety issues involved. They have identified workers abroad in places such as the Philippines, but the amount of time it takes to get the work permit...

Ceisteanna Eile - Other Questions: Covid-19 Pandemic (9 Dec 2021)

David Stanton: Is the Government proactive in examining ways of sharing intellectual property throughout the globe with countries such as India, which I understand has the capacity to produce large volumes of vaccines? What is the Government's position with regard to the coronavirus treatment acceleration programme, CTAP?

Ceisteanna ar Reachtaíocht a Gealladh - Questions on Promised Legislation (8 Dec 2021)

David Stanton: In my constituency, Cobh, Youghal and Midleton will be flooded if this happens.

Ceisteanna ar Reachtaíocht a Gealladh - Questions on Promised Legislation (8 Dec 2021)

David Stanton: The Minister for Housing, Local Government and Heritage, Deputy Darragh O'Brien, has said that within the next 30 years, 2 million of our citizens could be impacted by rising sea levels. It is projected that we will have a permanent sea level rise of up to 1 m within the next 30 years. Should we not be planning for this now, as other countries are? The national coastal change management...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Jobs, Enterprise and Innovation: Skills Needed to Support the Economic Recovery Plan: Discussion (8 Dec 2021)

David Stanton: Good. I thank our guests for being here and for their presentation. They have covered so much. I noticed that recently they had a paper on climate change, much of which had to do with technology, electric cars and so on. Have they looked at all at the challenges posed by rising sea levels and the kinds of skills we might need in the future to deal with that? I have here a book by John...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Jobs, Enterprise and Innovation: Skills Needed to Support the Economic Recovery Plan: Discussion (8 Dec 2021)

David Stanton: I will be brief. I am intrigued by what Dr. Power might say regarding rising sea levels. He did not get time earlier. I will go through my other questions before he answers but I will put it to him we need architects and engineers to start designing stuff. We either put up barriers, move to higher ground or put our houses up on stilts. There are many factors involved. What is happening...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Jobs, Enterprise and Innovation: Skills Needed to Support the Economic Recovery Plan: Discussion (8 Dec 2021)

David Stanton: There is one such course in my town where young people learn through music, which is quite interesting. I mentioned the PolyUp maths challenge earlier. There is a pilot project in Cork at the moment, which is very exciting. I would be interested to hear Mr. Donohoe's reaction to that when he has a moment.

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Jobs, Enterprise and Innovation: Skills Needed to Support the Economic Recovery Plan: Discussion (8 Dec 2021)

David Stanton: Chairman, how much time have I left in this slot?

Saincheisteanna Tráthúla - Topical Issue Debate: Mental Health Services (7 Dec 2021)

David Stanton: I thank the Minister of State for her very positive response, particularly her assurance that residents will not be moved "until appropriate placements have been found for each person based on their individual assessed needs, will and preference." That means that no pressure will be put on people and they will have to agree before they move to location X, Y or Z. That is hugely important...
