Toll Charge Increases: Motion [Private Members] (29 Nov 2022)

Ruairí Ó Murchú: It has been stated by some of my colleagues already that the problem is that we are starting from a bad place in that these PPPs have not delivered for the people, although they have delivered for the companies. Like everyone else here, I welcome the fact that we have a mitigation and that we have delayed the toll increases until June 2023. We were dealing with a huge amount of people who...

COP27: Statements (29 Nov 2022)

Ruairí Ó Murchú: We are talking about COP27. There are certain pieces we welcome in regard to loss and damage, which is the idea of compensation or reparation for those parts of the world that are already paying a huge price for the fact the world is on fire and for our failure as a global community to deal with issues relating to emissions. We all accept there has been an insufficient amount of movement,...

Ceisteanna - Questions: Departmental Strategies (29 Nov 2022)

Ruairí Ó Murchú: Are we any closer to a date for a citizens' assembly on drugs? We know the issue we all have, particularly in deprived communities that are absolutely ravaged by drug gangs and drug debt intimidation. Not only should we have a citizens' assembly; I would like to think that there are also conversations going on at European level about this matter. We all accept that Ireland, whether on a...

Ceisteanna - Questions: Ukraine War (29 Nov 2022)

Ruairí Ó Murchú: Obviously, we all are in complete support of looking after those fleeing war or torture, whether from Ukraine or other places, which can be hellholes, throughout the world. We all accept that we must put serious effort into streamlining the means by which accommodation is made available. We need to ensure that communication is improved if we are to avoid repeats of some of the incidents...

Ceisteanna - Questions: Taoiseach's Meetings and Engagements (29 Nov 2022)

Ruairí Ó Murchú: Many have spoken about the difficulties surrounding COP27 and about what the people have not signed up for. We want to make whatever moves we can away from fossil fuels. District heating can be one of those solutions. I once again bring up the issue of communal heating systems that are now being powered by gas. A feasibility study has already started around geothermal in respect of...

An tOrd Gnó - Order of Business (29 Nov 2022)

Ruairí Ó Murchú: I raise the issue of online disinformation and hate. On Sunday, a man filmed himself as he seemed to knock down a cyclist on the Castletown Road in Dundalk and then posted the video. The Garda is investigating. Concerning Carlingford, I have spoken to the Minister on the need for communication with the community but we have all been bombarded with online disinformation, conspiracy...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport, Tourism and Sport: Motorway Toll Charges: Transport Infrastructure Ireland (29 Nov 2022)

Ruairí Ó Murchú: I thank Transport Infrastructure Ireland, TII, for coming before the committee. I want to go back to the point about toll prices on the M50 as a means of demand reduction. What are we talking about here? They are doing that on the basis that the M50 obviously cannot deal with the traffic that the M50 should be able to deal with. I understand that. Is there a solution to this and has one...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport, Tourism and Sport: Motorway Toll Charges: Transport Infrastructure Ireland (29 Nov 2022)

Ruairí Ó Murchú: The TII is talking about the M50-----

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport, Tourism and Sport: Motorway Toll Charges: Transport Infrastructure Ireland (29 Nov 2022)

Ruairí Ó Murchú: Exactly. Mr. Masterson knows what I mean.

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport, Tourism and Sport: Motorway Toll Charges: Transport Infrastructure Ireland (29 Nov 2022)

Ruairí Ó Murchú: Is there a difficulty in even getting the information to be able to make determinations? I will not repeat everything that has been said before, which is usually what I say before I repeat everything that has been said before. Although I have been here for most of this meeting, there is every chance that representatives from the TII will end up repeating themselves here. The Chair has...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport, Tourism and Sport: Motorway Toll Charges: Transport Infrastructure Ireland (29 Nov 2022)

Ruairí Ó Murchú: This issue has therefore been highlighted since June. Is that the case?

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport, Tourism and Sport: Motorway Toll Charges: Transport Infrastructure Ireland (29 Nov 2022)

Ruairí Ó Murchú: That is a whole pile of over and back interaction. First, it highlighted it and then gave the information. Is it the case that at no point did anyone have a discussion about there being a problem here and that this is not right? Therein lies the problem. That was a mistake and, although I would say this, that mistake lies with the Government. It is a fair point and I think that the TII...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport, Tourism and Sport: Motorway Toll Charges: Transport Infrastructure Ireland (29 Nov 2022)

Ruairí Ó Murchú: I accept that. Mr. Walsh has spoken about the cost he is dealing with. He has spoken also about the PPPs, although I am not sure that they are quite offering the great deal that Mr. Walsh indicated them to be earlier. However, at some level, he has what he has in front of him and a huge amount of deviation is not allowed on that.
