- Public Accounts Committee: Vote 34: Housing, Planning, Community and Local Government (8 Mar 2018)
Kate O'Connell: I am conscious that in 2004 Dún Laoghaire brought in a ten-year plan to deal with voids and that seems to have been very successful. I do not like to have a cut at members when they are not here but I believe, in 2004, it was Fianna Fáil that removed direct build from the local authorities, and Part V was used for developers. If Meath had done what Dún Laoghaire did, maybe we...
- Public Accounts Committee: Vote 34: Housing, Planning, Community and Local Government (8 Mar 2018)
Kate O'Connell: I suppose my point is if one has a local authority where there are proactive politicians who see something in front of them and they decide to take action, such as Dún Laoghaire-Rathdown County Council did in 2004, changes can be made. I believe they turn around voids in approximately 12 weeks. It works. I believe the previous speaker was on the local authority in Meath at that time...
- Public Accounts Committee: Vote 34: Housing, Planning, Community and Local Government (8 Mar 2018)
Kate O'Connell: Who pays the bill in that regard?
- Third Interim Report from the Commission of Investigation into Mother and Baby Homes: Statements (Resumed) (7 Mar 2018)
Kate O'Connell: When we were children - six of us growing up in rural Ireland in the 1970s, 1980s and 1990s - our mother would threaten us that she would send us to Daingean if we did not behave. We did not know what happened in Daingean, which was about ten miles from my house in the midlands, but we had heard that behind its high stone walls, terrible things happened to bold children. We did not know...
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Health: Chronic Disease Management: Discussion (7 Mar 2018)
Kate O'Connell: I thank the witnesses for attending. I apologise for not being present for part of the meeting. I have looked back at their evidence and have read most of their documents for today. They spoke about a GP-led heart failure service and also about clinical nurse specialists in the community having a role. I am a community pharmacist and I wonder if they would see community pharmacists having...

Kate O'Connell: I am from there originally, which is why I mentioned it.
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Health: Chronic Disease Management: Discussion (7 Mar 2018)
Kate O'Connell: If I may, I wish to pick up on something that Professor Collins said. He spoke about indemnity, which is often mentioned when roles are being expanded. If we cast our minds back to the expansion of the vaccination programme into community pharmacies, the argument was made that people would be having anaphylactic reactions to flu vaccines left, right and centre. People asked what the...
- Topical Issue Debate: Retail Sector (21 Feb 2018)
Kate O'Connell: I thank the Minister of State for his reply. He said that the trading online voucher scheme which is being run through the local enterprise offices is a very good scheme. Having talked to people on the ground about it, my understanding of the way the matched funding works is that the business comes up with €2,500 and the LEO gives them another €2,500. However, speaking...
- Topical Issue Debate: Retail Sector (21 Feb 2018)
Kate O'Connell: Yes it is still Waltons.
- Topical Issue Debate: Retail Sector (21 Feb 2018)
Kate O'Connell: I will not do that today, but with an extra minute I might. I thank the Ceann Comhairle. I thank the Minister of State at the Department of Business, Enterprise and Innovation, Deputy John Halligan, for coming in to take this Topical Issue, which concerns the closure of Waltons music shop in Dublin city centre and the moving of its business to its Blanchardstown branch, having first...
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Health: Review of National Maternity Strategy 2016-2026: Discussion (21 Feb 2018)
Kate O'Connell: I thank the witnesses for all they do every day and I thank them for coming before the committee this morning. How we read this document depends on through what lens we look at it. Through the lens I am looking at it now I see the use of the word "women" and "mother" throughout the strategy. In acknowledgement of equality in Ireland, and out of respect, perhaps we could change that to...

- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Health: Review of National Maternity Strategy 2016-2026: Discussion (21 Feb 2018)

- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Health: Review of National Maternity Strategy 2016-2026: Discussion (21 Feb 2018)
Kate O'Connell: I want to pick up on Ms Leahy's comments on children living in hotel rooms. Anyone who has reared children can only imagine that it is not good for them. For the sake of the committee - I know that Ms Leahy does not yet have hard data - will she outline for it the milestones being missed? I am very familiar with the tests children go through, but will she outline them for the committee?...

- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Health: Review of National Maternity Strategy 2016-2026: Discussion (21 Feb 2018)
Kate O'Connell: I cannot even think what it is like if someone has a two year old and a new child is roaring. I used to go out the back sometimes just to get a little peace.
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Health: Review of National Maternity Strategy 2016-2026: Discussion (21 Feb 2018)
Kate O'Connell: I am thinking about where someone would wash and dry bottles and even the risk of the kettle falling. It is no way to rear children. I thank Ms Leahy for her comments because I do not think the issue has ever been brought up at the health committee. To sum it up, the outcomes for a portion of a generation of children are being adversely affected.
