Report of Comptroller and Auditor General: Motion. (4 Oct 2005)

Brendan Howlin: That is terrible.

Report of Comptroller and Auditor General: Motion. (4 Oct 2005)

Brendan Howlin: The Minister should not run away from this debate.

Report of Comptroller and Auditor General: Motion. (4 Oct 2005)

Brendan Howlin: I wish to test the Leas-Cheann Comhairle's patience under Standing Orders by taking the liberty of congratulating him on 44 years membership of this House today. It is a unique and singular achievement that should be acknowledged in the House.

Report of Comptroller and Auditor General: Motion. (4 Oct 2005)

Brendan Howlin: I want to comment on this important debate. I listened with incredulity to the comments of members on the Government side. It is clear they have been too long in Government. They have no notion of the public attitude and anger to the profligacy that is now the hallmark of the way the Government conducts its business. Waste is of no importance. We saw this attitude displayed again by the...

Report of Comptroller and Auditor General: Motion. (4 Oct 2005)

Brendan Howlin: Whatever number was promised, not even two, never mind 200,000, have been issued. Such announcements are made and the date for the issuing of these cards is moved forward and then moved forward again. Not one of them has been delivered. People from my home town and from other regions who have to travel long distances for cancer treatment are angry when they see hundreds of millions of euro...

Leaders' Questions. (4 Oct 2005)

Defence Forces Recruitment. (29 Sep 2005)

Job Losses. (29 Sep 2005)

Brendan Howlin: Question : To ask the Minister for Enterprise, Trade and Employment the action he will take arising from the plan by Irish Ferries to seek the redundancy of 543 Irish staff with a view to replacing them by lower paid workers from abroad, especially in view of the consequences for labour relations in general and social partnership in particular; the total potential cost to the Exchequer of...

Job Losses. (29 Sep 2005)

Brendan Howlin: I thank the Ceann Comhairle for allowing the Private Notice Questions. After the Taoiseach's strong comments in response to Deputy Rabbitte yesterday, we know how the Government feels about this. What will it do specifically? He strongly urges the company to comply with normal industrial relations practices. Has either the Taoiseach or the Minister for Enterprise, Trade and Employment sought...

Job Losses. (29 Sep 2005)

Brendan Howlin: Has the Minister of State met IBEC representatives directly to convey his view of the matter?

Job Losses. (29 Sep 2005)

Brendan Howlin: In the past hour I have received a telephone call from a very distraught Irish Ferries worker in anguish about what he has to do between now and Sunday. Will the Minister of State stand up and say he will this evening make contact with Mr. Eamon Rothwell and ask that the deadline be moved back at least a week to allow——

Job Losses. (29 Sep 2005)

Brendan Howlin: This is only my second interjection.

Job Losses. (29 Sep 2005)

Brendan Howlin: If the Chair had listened to my constituent he would give me those 30 seconds simply to ask the Minister of State if he would make that call and ask Mr. Rothwell to allow at least another week for people to see if the machinery of the State can address this critical issue.

Job Losses. (29 Sep 2005)

Job Losses. (29 Sep 2005)

Brendan Howlin: It is quite immoral.

Order of Business. (29 Sep 2005)

Brendan Howlin: It is totally misleading.

Order of Business. (29 Sep 2005)

Brendan Howlin: The question I intended asking concerned the national consumer strategy agency Bill but Deputy Hogan has already raised this. This agency was the main plank of the Government response to the rip-off Ireland analysis. Can the Tánaiste put pressure on her colleague to bring this in before the end of the year, as promised, so the agency can be put on a statutory basis?
