Seanad: Adjournment Matters: Education and Training Boards (17 Jul 2014)

Diarmuid Wilson: I thank the Cathaoirleach for accepting this Adjournment matter which I tabled. I know there were huge demands from other colleagues. I join the Cathaoirleach in warmly welcoming to the House the Minister of State, Deputy Damien English. His appointment is well-received and long overdue. I wish him well in his role as Minister of State at the Department of Education and Skills. Last year,...

Seanad: Adjournment Matters: Education and Training Boards (17 Jul 2014)

Diarmuid Wilson: As a Minister of State.

Seanad: Adjournment Matters: Education and Training Boards (17 Jul 2014)

Diarmuid Wilson: I thank the Minister of State for his very comprehensive reply. If there had been extensive discussion between the two ETBs on the matter then there would have been no need for me to table an Adjournment matter this afternoon. It is serious when one education training board, in effect, refuses to communicate with another on a matter of budget and personnel. It is unfortunate that this...

Seanad: Electoral (Amendment) (No. 4) Bill 2014: Second Stage (17 Jul 2014)

Diarmuid Wilson: I welcome the Minister, Deputy Alan Kelly, back to the House. The legislation has come about as a result of an anomaly which means a by-election cannot be held in respect of a seat in the House where a vacancy has arisen as a result of the election to the European Parliament of our former colleague, Deirdre Clune. I wish her very well in her role as an MEP. The main question on this side of...

Seanad: Housing (Miscellaneous Provisions) Bill 2014: Report and Final Stages (16 Jul 2014)

Diarmuid Wilson: I second the amendment. I warmly welcome the Minister of State, Deputy Coffey. Both the Cathaoirleach and I had the privilege of serving with him in this House prior to the most recent general election. His contributions were always genuine, heartfelt and in the best interests of the country. He looked somewhat hesitant when he first entered the Chamber and left again briefly.

Seanad: Housing (Miscellaneous Provisions) Bill 2014: Report and Final Stages (16 Jul 2014)

Diarmuid Wilson: He probably wanted to pinch himself. The Minister of State is welcome and I wish him well. These are both sensible amendments and it would be extremely worthwhile if a framework were put in place in order to allow housing authorities to deal with domestic violence. It is a fact that such violence occurs, in the case of males as well as females. A framework such as that proposed should be...
