- Seanad: Greyhound Racing Bill 2018: Committee Stage (23 Oct 2018)
David Norris: Like the Judicial Appointments Bill which the Senator is supporting, after her party's disgusting deal with the Government.
- Seanad: Greyhound Racing Bill 2018: Committee Stage (23 Oct 2018)
David Norris: The Minister of State has given a number of bland non-reasons for not accepting this amendment. He said nothing convincing for not accepting it. He put on the record of the House the recommendations of various committees that were commissioned to write reports and they indicated it was important to have veterinary practitioners and people from the greyhound industry on the board. By...

David Norris: It is what?

David Norris: That was a very interesting comment from Senator Butler.
- Seanad: Greyhound Racing Bill 2018: Committee Stage (23 Oct 2018)
David Norris: This is grammatically completely unnecessary. It means exactly the same thing. "Board, a committee" means "Board or a committee". It is unnecessary, but if the Minister of State wants to make the amendment, it is fine by me. However, on the section-----
- Seanad: Greyhound Racing Bill 2018: Committee Stage (23 Oct 2018)
David Norris: I know that these things are put in as a matter of course, excluding Members of the Seanad, the Dáil and the European Parliament, but why? I ask the Minister of State to give me the rationale. What exactly is so poisonous about being a Member of the Oireachtas? Why should somebody who one day is sufficiently qualified to be a member of Bord na gCon be ruled out? I do not see the need...
- Seanad: Greyhound Racing Bill 2018: Committee Stage (23 Oct 2018)
David Norris: I wonder if this is something that has been copied from the British jurisdiction.
- Seanad: Greyhound Racing Bill 2018: Committee Stage (23 Oct 2018)
David Norris: Does the Minister of State know whether we are following the British jurisdiction in this instance?
- Seanad: Greyhound Racing Bill 2018: Committee Stage (23 Oct 2018)
David Norris: I support Senator Ó Domhnaill. It seems to be perfectly obvious that if a dog has been subjected to a doping test in England and the owner has been convicted of doping, it would be extraordinary that the dog would not be banned from racing at an Irish racecourse. A ban would be absolutely obvious so I completely agree with the Senator. I hope the Minister of State will take his point...
- Seanad: Order of Business (17 Oct 2018)
David Norris: I cannot hear either. The Senators are mumbling.

David Norris: It also works in universities.
- Seanad: Order of Business (17 Oct 2018)
David Norris: There are no such complaints. However, there is some difficulty in keeping the register accurate because people change address.
- Seanad: Order of Business (17 Oct 2018)
David Norris: A couple of days ago, Senator McFadden raised a serious matter of which I was previously completely unaware, which is housing agents apparently charging up to €500 to people for the privilege of being allowed to view a property. It is absolutely outrageous.
- Seanad: Order of Business (17 Oct 2018)
David Norris: This practice certainly should be stopped. It is nothing but absolute exploitation of the most vulnerable people. Very often these houses are oversubscribed so if €500 is being charged then how much money is being made? How could people afford to do this? I call on the Government to introduce a simple Bill addressing this issue to put this noxious practice out of favour. It should...
- Seanad: Order of Business (17 Oct 2018)
David Norris: I beg the Senator's pardon. I understand that Deputy Jan O'Sullivan has introduced such legislation in the Dáil so let us have it here in the Seanad. If nobody else is prepare to do so I am certainly prepared to propose it and I am certain that there are plenty of Members who would second it but perhaps it would be better if the Government would take it up. I ask the Leader to do so...
