Select Committee on Social Protection: Social Welfare Bill 2016: Committee Stage (17 Nov 2016)

Joan Collins: No. I will ask FLAC to explain the reasons it raised the issue, particularly in the case of short-term arrears.

Select Committee on Social Protection: Social Welfare Bill 2016: Committee Stage (17 Nov 2016)

Joan Collins: I do not think the Minister should worry about the Seanad as it normally does not delay Bills for that length of time. Even when the lone parent's allowance was cut, that did not happen. I know that Seanad Members are now a different mix, but I do not think they would delay the Bill.

Mental Health Services Funding: Motion [Private Members] (15 Nov 2016)

Joan Collins: I welcome the debate on mental health reform. I believe this should be debated every couple of months in order to have checks and balances in this regard. I particularly support Deputy Jan O'Sullivan's point about having a monitoring group looking into this every six months and checking where we have come from and where we have not addressed issues that need to be addressed. The most...

Irish Sign Language Report: Motion (10 Nov 2016)

Joan Collins: I congratulate the justice committee for bringing this report to the Dáil. It has been a very important debate. We have had this debate previously, but this time we have the legislation which Senator Mark Daly brought to the Seanad a number of months ago, which is very important and must be worked on. I would like to hear the Minister of State when summing up state he will support...

Social Welfare Bill 2016: Second Stage (Resumed) (9 Nov 2016)

Joan Collins: My contribution to tonight's debate will concentrate on lone parents. All sections of society were hammered during the recession and the fact that the Minister is giving €5 here and there and increasing jobseeker's allowance for young people under 25 by €2 shows where society has gone. People will never see the full restoration of what they received before the recession in...

Joan Collins: I thank Deputies and parties for their support of this Bill. It is an important Bill which has been reflected by the Minister offering pre-legislative access to it. I will not put down red lines yet. However, we need to progress this quickly and not see it buried in the legislative process. Under the new politics arrangement, ten weeks are given for Committee Stage. I would like that...

Joan Collins: Tairgim: "Go léifear an Bille an Dara hUair anois." I move: "That the Bill be now read a Second Time." Topical Issue Debate: School Staff (26 Oct 2016)

Joan Collins: As Deputy Ó Snodaigh stated, Deputies were half expecting the reply from the Minister of State. However, I also expected a little more understanding of the position in which the Assumption girls primary school finds itself and possibly some ideas on how to address the issue. The Minister of State indicated that the pupil-teacher ratio currently stands at 27:1. Fifth and sixth year...

Topical Issue Debate: School Staff (26 Oct 2016)

Joan Collins: I bring to the attention of the House the fact that three of the parents with daughters in the Assumption girls' school are in the Visitors Gallery. They have had a long day because this morning, in response to the fact that tomorrow they could lose their teacher and with the permission of the parents, there was a protest by the students outside the school. It was very emotional because...

Leaders' Questions (26 Oct 2016)

Joan Collins: There seems to be a very softly-softly, kid-gloves treatment of certain well-heeled taxpayers by the Minister for Finance and the Revenue Commissioners. Did I say "taxpayers"? Sorry, I meant to say wealthy people who are abusing our tax laws in some cases or, in other cases, engaging in outright tax evasion. In the first group, wealthy people are using a loophole to transfer wealth to...
