- Seanad: Commencement Matters: Nursing Home Accommodation Provision (4 Oct 2017)
Frank Feighan: I am glad to have the opportunity to raise this important issue again and I thank the Minister of State for giving of his time to be present. One of his predecessors, Ms Kathleen Lynch, announced one of the most comprehensive programmes of investment in public nursing home facilities in the history of the State. As part of this €400 million investment programme by the Government, 33...
- Seanad: Commencement Matters: Nursing Home Accommodation Provision (4 Oct 2017)
Frank Feighan: I thank the Minister of State for his response. I am delighted our Government is fully committed to upgrading nursing homes across the country, including Sacred Heart Hospital, Roscommon, and St. Patrick's Hospital, Carrick-on-Shannon. I remember during the last Government, we went through many hoops to get this investment on the table. It certainly reassures residents and their families...
- Seanad: Mental Health Services: Motion (4 Oct 2017)
Frank Feighan: This is my third time speaking in the Chamber since yesterday and I believe the Minister of State has also been in the Ceramics Room three times. I am sure he is becoming used to the surroundings in the Seanad's new home. I acknowledge the issues raised by Senator Freeman and sincerely thank her and Pieta House for the work they do. A new Pieta House centre will be launched in Athlone soon...
- Seanad: Nursing Homes Support Scheme: Statements (3 Oct 2017)
Frank Feighan: I thank the Minister of State for coming here to speak on a very important topic, the nursing home support scheme, commonly known as the fair deal scheme. Over the years my office and I have been helping many people to get around the complexities of the fair deal scheme. It is only when one has to avail of the scheme that one becomes aware of it as I did when my mother was in hospital and...
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on European Union Affairs: Special Meeting of the Joint Committee on European Union Affairs meeting with the Joint Committee on Foreign Affairs and Trade, and Defence and the Joint Committee on the Implementation of the Good Friday Agreement
Engagement with Mr. Guy Verhofstadt MEP, European Parliament Brexit Co-ordinator (21 Sep 2017) Frank Feighan: I welcome Mr. Verhofstadt. Those of us on the island of Ireland see that, once again, the British have shot themselves in our foot. We feel bad about that. I am Vice Chairman of the British-Irish Parliamentary Assembly. Most of the parliamentarians from Scotland, Ireland, England, Wales and other jurisdictions are concerned about this situation and would like to see a change. Mr....

- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport, Tourism and Sport: Medical Bureau of Road Safety: Discussion with Chairman Designate (20 Sep 2017)
Frank Feighan: I welcome the witness. How is the bureau able to find out if people are drug driving?
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport, Tourism and Sport: Medical Bureau of Road Safety: Discussion with Chairman Designate (20 Sep 2017)
Frank Feighan: What are Dr. Bedford's views on reducing the alcohol limit? Does he have a view?
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport, Tourism and Sport: Medical Bureau of Road Safety: Discussion with Chairman Designate (20 Sep 2017)
Frank Feighan: Are there measures that can be taken from a technology point of view? We have spoken about the fact that Garda resources are quite important. Have there been advances there that have been looked at?
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport, Tourism and Sport: Medical Bureau of Road Safety: Discussion with Chairman Designate (20 Sep 2017)
Frank Feighan: Is there technology available within a car that means that one cannot start the car if they have drink on board?
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport, Tourism and Sport: Medical Bureau of Road Safety: Discussion with Chairman Designate (20 Sep 2017)
Frank Feighan: I believe that technology should be used more. Is there a need to extend the use of alcolocks? Gardaí should be visible but they could be doing better things. It may help reduce the Garda presence if we had alcolocks or some other technology. We have speed cameras which are helping to reduce deaths on the road and the obligation for gardaí to be standing by the side of a road....
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport, Tourism and Sport: Medical Bureau of Road Safety: Discussion with Chairman Designate (20 Sep 2017)
Frank Feighan: In the last months this committee has discussed the question of reducing the drink driving limit to zero. This has been controversial. Part of the job of the committee is to try to tease out information from all sides. Do we want the limit drilled down? The Road Safety Authority could not give the information to us because of data protection issues and we were quite disappointed at this....
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport, Tourism and Sport: Medical Bureau of Road Safety: Discussion with Chairman Designate (20 Sep 2017)
Frank Feighan: What is Dr. Bedford's views on a committee that is just trying to drill down legislation and is being told that the data needed by us to make decisions on legislation is unavailable because of data protection? No names are mentioned, or anything like that. To me, it is absurd.
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport, Tourism and Sport: Medical Bureau of Road Safety: Discussion with Chairman Designate (20 Sep 2017)
Frank Feighan: I wanted to drill down on the number of deaths, year by year, from 2012 to 2017. That information could not be made available to the Chair or to the committee because of a data protection issue. I was very surprised.
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport, Tourism and Sport: Report into Ticketing at Rio Olympic Games: Discussion (Resumed) (18 Aug 2017)
Frank Feighan: It has been an interesting few days. As politicians we get used to never being amazed, but this is absolutely amazing. I want to be positive in the first instance. I want to congratulate Ms Keane, Mr. Treacy, Mr. Mulvey and Ms O'Shea, the OCI and Sport Ireland, for being upbeat, upfront and for trying to bring what is a very sad chapter in sport in Ireland to a close and to make it much...
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport, Tourism and Sport: Report into Ticketing at Rio Olympic Games: Discussion (17 Aug 2017)
Frank Feighan: I welcome the Minister and thank him for his statement. He seems to have acted quickly in Rio. Despite Mr. Justice Moran's fine forensic work, it is unfortunate, as the Minister said, that the report has been hampered by the absence of co-operation from key figures at the heart of this controversy. To complicate the investigation even further, there is an appalling lack of a paper trail...
- Seanad: Order of Business (19 Jul 2017)
Frank Feighan: I agree with Senator Leyden's comments. We attended a successful British-Irish Parliamentary Assembly plenary session in Kilkenny. I pay tribute to the co-chairs, Deputy Funchion of Sinn Féin and Mr. Andrew Rosindell, MP, of the Conservatives. I also pay tribute to the Oireachtas staff, who were incredible. The programme that they put on was brilliant. I am referring to the assembly...
- Seanad: Order of Business (19 Jul 2017)
Frank Feighan: Compromise.
- Seanad: Order of Business (13 Jul 2017)
Frank Feighan: Yesterday I joined in condemning the behaviour that Senator Mac Lochlainn has described, the burning of effigies, the coffin with the picture of the late Martin McGuinness and also the election posters from all parties. We saw the burning of flags, the European Union flag, the Tricolour, and the flag of the Ivory Coast, which is the Tricolour back to front. I do not know what the Ivory...
