Written Answers — Department of Health: EU Regulations (10 Mar 2021)

Gino Kenny: 914. To ask the Minister for Health his plans to exercise the Misuse of Drugs Acts against CBD foods with trace amounts of THC produced and or sold by Irish companies who have novel food applications pending at considerable cost on the advice of the Food Safety Authority given that the European Commission has indicated to an organisation (details supplied) that the Commission itself has...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Health: Covid-19 Public Health Measures: Update from Health Service Executive (9 Mar 2021)

Gino Kenny: I thank the HSE delegation for its statement this morning. I have two questions. The first question is in regard to workplace transmissions. SIPTU made a statement last week that serial testing in meat processing plants has been reduced in recent times. My experience with the Health and Safety Authority, HSA, in regard to workplace manifestations has been, to say the least, quite...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Health: Covid-19 Public Health Measures: Update from Health Service Executive (9 Mar 2021)

Gino Kenny: My second question is in regard to the administration of the vaccine. I refer to the rate of hourly pay to those who are administering the vaccine. According to what I have in front of me, GPs administering the vaccine will get €120 per hour, pharmacists will get €70 per hour, nurses will get €25 per hour and student nurses on placements in vaccination centres...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Health: Covid-19 Public Health Measures: Update from Health Service Executive (9 Mar 2021)

Gino Kenny: My last question is in regard to the interns or trainee doctors. I understand 300 will be let go. Senator Kyne touched on that at the beginning. Many people probably do not understand how interns in the Irish public health service who are badly needed are in essence now being let go. It does not make sense, particularly as we need as many doctors now as possible in the pandemic. Could...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Health: Covid-19 Public Health Measures: Update from Health Service Executive (9 Mar 2021)

Gino Kenny: I thank Dr. Henry.

Covid-19 Vaccine Roll-out Programme: Statements (Resumed) (4 Mar 2021)

Gino Kenny: I am sharing time with Deputy Barry. We all acknowledge that the roll-out of the vaccine is logistically extremely challenging so we wish those who are on the front line of the vaccine roll-out well because this will get us out of the pandemic. I raise an issue with regard to the revision of the vaccine schedule which was conducted last week. That was very welcome to those who are...

Covid-19 Vaccine Roll-out Programme: Statements (Resumed) (4 Mar 2021)

Gino Kenny: There are two minutes for Deputy Mick Barry.

Written Answers — Department of Health: EU Directives (3 Mar 2021)

Gino Kenny: 729. To ask the Minister for Health the number of Irish patients that have availed of the EU cross-border directive in the UK; and the breakdown by year for the past five years of the number of patients that availed of the EU cross-border directive in the UK. [11042/21]

Written Answers — Department of Health: Health Services Access (3 Mar 2021)

Gino Kenny: 730. To ask the Minister for Health if the application process for the new Northern Ireland planned healthcare scheme will be the same as the EU cross-border directive; and if the refund amounts by the HSE to patients availing of the scheme will be on the same guideline pricing as the EU cross-border directive. [11043/21]

Written Answers — Department of Health: Health Services Access (3 Mar 2021)

Gino Kenny: 731. To ask the Minister for Health if he plans to extend the Northern Ireland planned healthcare scheme beyond January 2022; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [11044/21]

Written Answers — Department of Health: Cannabis for Medicinal Use (3 Mar 2021)

Gino Kenny: 994. To ask the Minister for Health the timeframe for the commencement of the medicinal cannabis access programme in 2021; the funding that has been allocated for the programme; if those who are in receipt of a ministerial licence will be included in the programme; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [12078/21]

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Health: Covid-19 Health Related Issues: Update (2 Mar 2021)

Gino Kenny: I thank the Minister for his statement. I have a number of questions, the first of which is with regard to vaccines offered to countries outside the EU. For example, there was a report in theBusiness Postrecently regarding Russia offering the Sputnik V vaccine to Ireland. There is also a vaccine from China, and one from Cuba, which is off-patent. To date, have the Irish Government and HSE...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Health: Covid-19 Health Related Issues: Update (2 Mar 2021)

Gino Kenny: My second question is on vaccination inequality and the call, particularly by the World Health Organization, for a people's vaccine. This week, there is a crucial vote on the suspension of patents and intellectual property rights and if that happens it will give the less developed countries access to vaccines. I hope that anybody on the health committee would agree with giving as many...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Health: Covid-19 Health Related Issues: Update (2 Mar 2021)

Gino Kenny: I am sure that the Minister will agree that vast amounts of public money have gone into pharmaceutical companies and it took up to about $8 billion to create these vaccines. The private sector did not create them themselves even though they will profit hugely from them. Public moneys have gone into vaccines so they should benefit the public. Last Thursday, we informally spoke about the...

Written Answers — Department of Health: Drugs Payment Scheme (24 Feb 2021)

Gino Kenny: 998. To ask the Minister for Health if he plans to add first-line treatments for hyperemesis gravidarum to the drugs payment scheme and medical card; if his attention has been drawn to the significant financial pressure that the cost of these treatments put on pregnant women; if he will address this, as a matter of urgency; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [10316/21]

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Health: Vitamin D and Covid-19: Covit-D Consortium (23 Feb 2021)

Gino Kenny: I thank the witnesses for their contributions. It is a fascinating discussion. It seems that vitamin D is the new vitamin C in some ways. It all points towards us all taking it. Is there a link or are there discussion papers on vitamin D deficiency and depression among those who suffer from seasonal affective disorder? The vast majority of the prison population in Ireland and other...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Health: Vitamin D and Covid-19: Covit-D Consortium (23 Feb 2021)

Gino Kenny: I think Dr. Healy wanted to come in.

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Health: Vitamin D and Covid-19: Covit-D Consortium (23 Feb 2021)

Gino Kenny: I thank Dr. Healy. That is very interesting.

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Health: Vitamin D and Covid-19: Covit-D Consortium (23 Feb 2021)

Gino Kenny: Do any of the contributors have any opinions on ultraviolet lamps emitting vitamin D? Some people who have acute seasonal affective disorder, SAD, use them. Do any of the witnesses have opinions on using ultraviolet lamps to absorb vitamin D into the body?

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Health: Vitamin D and Covid-19: Covit-D Consortium (23 Feb 2021)

Gino Kenny: To a certain extent, yes. I know people who use such lamps in the wintertime and they find them very beneficial. Scientifically, I do not know what amount of vitamin D people absorb. People do find solace in them because the lack of light in the winter months can have a detrimental effect on people's well-being and sense of life. Some people do find them very beneficial.
