Select Committee on Foreign Affairs and Trade, and Defence: Estimates for Public Services 2022
Vote 35 - Army Pensions (Revised)
Vote 36 - Defence (Revised)
(9 Mar 2022)

David Stanton: I am not sure whether the issue would have an impact on the decision-making of anybody who was thinking of rejoining the Defence Forces, having retired previously and drawing down a pension. If they rejoin, their remuneration will not be significantly greater than what they get from their pension. At one stage, there was a campaign to try to get people to rejoin the Defence Forces. I am...

Ceisteanna Eile - Other Questions: Education and Training Provision (8 Mar 2022)

David Stanton: I thank the Minister for the final commitment that he will look at the professional development of staff and the appropriate future staffing framework, which is mentioned in the national education and training strategy. In this particular instance, however, it seems to be missing; it is not there. I would be very grateful if the Minister could come back to me with concrete plans on this. I...

Ceisteanna Eile - Other Questions: Education and Training Provision (8 Mar 2022)

David Stanton: I have been interested in LTIs for some time. They could be said to be the Cinderella of the training structure. I am interested in hearing what the Minister has to say about the plans to expand the number of people taking part in these traininginitiatives and about the number who took part in them in the past year.

Ceisteanna Eile - Other Questions: Education and Training Provision (8 Mar 2022)

David Stanton: Will the Minister agree with me that the staff who work in these LTIs are important? Could he tell me what plans there are to help those staff in their professional development and to put in place an appropriate future staffing framework, as has been mentioned in the national further education and training strategy, Future FET, that was launched two years ago? Is the Minister concerned that...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Jobs, Enterprise and Innovation: Engagement with Representatives from the European Commission (3 Mar 2022)

David Stanton: I understand this is the Commissioner's first visit to Ireland in his role so he is very welcome. I thank him for visiting. His opening statement was very interesting. Joint Oireachtas Committee on Jobs, Enterprise and Innovation: General Scheme of the Right to Request Remote Work Bill 2022: Discussion (Resumed) (2 Mar 2022)

David Stanton: I will be brief. I wish to raise a few issues. I have had a look through some of the examples that the Department provided with respect to what happens in other jurisdictions. It seems to me that the right to request remote working is basically it, and that from what I can see, this legislation is on a par with that is already in place in other jurisdictions. One of the core issues that...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Jobs, Enterprise and Innovation: General Scheme of the Right to Request Remote Work Bill 2022: Discussion (Resumed) (2 Mar 2022)

David Stanton: Is Ms King aware of any jurisdiction where the right to remote working has been granted through a legislative process in the European Union or beyond? I would be interested to find out if any other jurisdictions have that particular right built into their laws. I cannot find it but I am sure that does not mean it is not there. I am sure if it is there, Ms King will have located it and...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Jobs, Enterprise and Innovation: General Scheme of the Right to Request Remote Work Bill 2022: Discussion (Resumed) (2 Mar 2022)

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Jobs, Enterprise and Innovation: General Scheme of the Right to Request Remote Work Bill 2022: Discussion (Resumed) (2 Mar 2022)

David Stanton: Does that mean the employer should have the responsibility or the right to inspect the workplace, whether using cameras or something else? How would that square with a person's right to a private residence?

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Jobs, Enterprise and Innovation: General Scheme of the Right to Request Remote Work Bill 2022: Discussion (Resumed) (2 Mar 2022)

David Stanton: In New Zealand, the employer has a right to view photographs and footage of the workplace in the home. Would Ms King see that as a reasonable accommodation here, given the responsibility employers will have to ensure safety of the workplace? How can we square that?

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Jobs, Enterprise and Innovation: General Scheme of the Right to Request Remote Work Bill 2022: Discussion (Resumed) (2 Mar 2022)

David Stanton: I can see that much work would have to be done in this area. For instance, an employee could fall down his or her stairs, whether because it was not safe or for whatever reason, and if the home is the workplace and he or she was deemed to be at work, that could be an issue. I will not go on because I do not have enough time, but this definitely needs further examination. Will Ms McElwee...
