Garda Síochána Ombudsman Commission
(7 Apr 2022)

Imelda Munster: Does Mr. Hume agree with, understand or even appreciate descriptions in the media of GSOC's investigators' relationship with the Garda? It is deemed they are frustrated with the alleged lack of co-operation from officers. There were references to delays in handing over documents and making witnesses available. Does Mr. Hume accept there is merit to that?

Public Accounts Committee: 2020 Report of the Comptroller and Auditor General and Appropriation Accounts
Garda Síochána Ombudsman Commission
(7 Apr 2022)

Imelda Munster: I will finish up by saying that the Minister had described the new proposals as the most wide-ranging and coherent reform of policing in a generation. I was surprised that the Garda Commissioner had said that that the gardaí do not seem to be in favour of the new reforms and I believe "draconian" was the word he used. What is the commission’s feeling on that?

Vacant Properties: Motion [Private Members] (6 Apr 2022)

Imelda Munster: The housing crisis continues to escalate. The war in Ukraine and the resultant humanitarian crisis has highlighted the state of housing in Ireland yet again. We need to allow for thousands of refugees to come here to seek safety but our housing market is an absolute mess. By Easter weekend, we are expecting the number of arrivals to be between 26,000 and 32,000. Fine Gael has been in...

Joint Committee on Tourism, Culture, Arts, Sport And Media: Working Conditions and Skills Shortages in Tourism and Hospitality Sector: Discussion (Resumed) (6 Apr 2022)

Imelda Munster: I welcome all our guests, especially Mr. Mark McGowan from Drogheda. My first questions are for Mr. Kelly from Fáilte Ireland. In his opening statement, he raised issues of concern in the sector in respect of workers' pay and conditions that came to light from the extensive research done in 2021. He said workers mentioned that pay has to be improved and conditions in terms of work...

Joint Committee on Tourism, Culture, Arts, Sport And Media: Working Conditions and Skills Shortages in Tourism and Hospitality Sector: Discussion (Resumed) (6 Apr 2022)

Imelda Munster: For clarity, the excellent employer programme will not include a recommendation for better pay and conditions.

Joint Committee on Tourism, Culture, Arts, Sport And Media: Working Conditions and Skills Shortages in Tourism and Hospitality Sector: Discussion (Resumed) (6 Apr 2022)

Imelda Munster: I just wanted clarity on that. The Restaurants Association of Ireland made reference to a restaurant and pub representative being appointed to the board of Fáilte Ireland, and this committee recommended that. However, that has not happened to date. Is there a particular reason for that?

Joint Committee on Tourism, Culture, Arts, Sport And Media: Working Conditions and Skills Shortages in Tourism and Hospitality Sector: Discussion (Resumed) (6 Apr 2022)

Imelda Munster: Okay, perhaps the committee can follow up on that with the Minister. I turn to Mr. Fenn and Ms Campbell of the Irish Hotels Federation. In their previous submission to the committee in January, and they touched on this earlier, they were very clear they were against joint labour committees, JLCs. I believe they said JLCs are utterly unnecessary and that they favour the minimum wage and the...

Joint Committee on Tourism, Culture, Arts, Sport And Media: Working Conditions and Skills Shortages in Tourism and Hospitality Sector: Discussion (Resumed) (6 Apr 2022)

Imelda Munster: The federation favours the minimum wage and the employment industrial relations legislation, weak as it is. It is obviously against JLCs. My question is specifically about the industry's refusal to entertain better pay and conditions. As I said to Mr. Kelly from Fáilte Ireland, it is not rocket science. There is 5% unemployment at present so people have choices. If the federation is...
