- Seanad: Child Protection: Motion (5 Mar 2014)
Terry Leyden: That is fair enough. I assure the Senator that I never entered any of my children in one of those competitions. My own daughters enjoyed participating in Irish dancing competitions. I recall the green skirts and simple white blouses they wore, with no make-up or any of that. They went along to dance and enjoy themselves, not for the competition as such. They received good training and...
- Seanad: Child Protection: Motion (5 Mar 2014)
Terry Leyden: I commend Senator van Turnhout for highlighting this issue. I believe the Minister will find it rather difficult in so far as legislation is concerned. It is not quite as simple as that. It is easy to ban the pageants and it is obvious they involve the exploitation of young people, with false make-up and so on. It would certainly discourage this competition coming back here again....
- Seanad: Order of Business (5 Mar 2014)
Terry Leyden: I support the call by Senator Ivana Bacik regarding the situation in Ukraine. It would be very worthwhile to have the Tánaiste come in and brief the House on the situation. It is still very tense in the region and there is no evidence of a united approach from the European Union. This morning we heard the Foreign Minister of Spain complimenting the Russian Foreign Minister on oil...

Terry Leyden: Ms Brasseur was in contention for the post with Bob Walter from the European Democratic Group.
- Seanad: Order of Business (5 Mar 2014)
Terry Leyden: I am sure he will do so. It is interesting to note, this being International Women's Week, that the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe has elected a woman as President for the first time in some 30 years. It is a clear indication of progress. I was delighted to support Ms Brasseur's nomination, as she was the outgoing president of the Alliance of Liberals and Democrats for...
- Seanad: Order of Business (5 Mar 2014)
Terry Leyden: I certainly did. Will the Cathaoirleach, as Chairman of the CPP, recommend that Ms Brasseur be invited to the House to address us? I have no doubt she will make a very interesting and worthwhile contribution. I hope my female colleagues will be supportive of my proposal.

- Seanad: Death of Former Member: Expressions of Sympathy (4 Mar 2014)
Terry Leyden: I would like to welcome the extended family of the late, great Martin Joe O'Toole, who was a former councillor, Senator and Deputy. On behalf of Fianna Fáil, I wish to pay tribute to the life and times of Martin Joe O'Toole - may he rest in peace. He was born on 27 May 1925 and departed this life on 1 October 2013. I would like to extend our deepest sympathy to his family and friends...
- Seanad: Order of Business (4 Mar 2014)
Terry Leyden: I suggest that the Leader should ask the Minister for Foreign Affairs and Trade to brief the Seanad in this regard. We all have an interest in the matter. I would like the Tánaiste to brief us on the up-to-date position regarding the situation in Ukraine. It is very tense and serious and could have far-reaching consequences.
- Seanad: Order of Business (4 Mar 2014)
Terry Leyden: I wish to second the amendment to No. 7 on the Order of Business. I support colleagues calling for a debate on what is happening in Crimea in particular and Ukraine generally. The press conference given by Mr. Putin today was bizarre. He denied that the troops in Crimea are Russian. He suggested that they might have bought their uniforms. There is a serious background to this issue. It...
