Seanad: Order of Business (22 Mar 2012)

Fidelma Healy Eames: This is a good day for Ireland. I do not agree with Senators Darragh O'Brien or David Norris that we can have no confidence in how the Government can manage into the future. The Minister for Finance, Deputy Noonan, has struck a significant deal for Ireland. We will have 13 years to pay off a legacy debt, which along with growth and inflation will go a long way towards helping us address it....

Seanad: Order of Business (22 Mar 2012)

Fidelma Healy Eames: I am confident the Minister for Finance, Deputy Noonan, will now focus on addressing our large banking debt of €30 billion. I know from speaking to him that that is his intention. Our country is in safe hands.

Seanad: Order of Business (22 Mar 2012)

Fidelma Healy Eames: I would welcome if the Minister, Deputy Noonan, could come to the House for a debate on banking in general, including the recently announced unreasonable charges which AIB proposes to impose on its customers and the commitment of banks, some of which have been nationalised, to this country and its people. It is timely, in the context of this good news, that the Minister would come into the House.

Seanad: Finance Bill 2012: Second Stage (21 Mar 2012)

Fidelma Healy Eames: I welcome the Minister of State to the House. I have noted Senators' comments and will refer to them as I proceed. Given the point at which we are in our economic cycle and the state of our finances, I compliment the Government on a number of the Bill's elements, but we should consider other measures to ensure greater equity and fairness in society so that people can stay afloat. I...

Fidelma Healy Eames: That is a fair point.

Seanad: Finance Bill 2012: Second Stage (21 Mar 2012)

Fidelma Healy Eames: Senator Barrett spoke about the aircraft leasing sector, which is very important to our trade links with China. Nine of the top ten aircraft leasing companies in the world have bases in Ireland, more than 3,000 aircraft valued at €83 billion are leased out of Dublin and the sector contributes €300 million in corporation tax annually and supports 2,000 jobs. It is worth a bit of an...

Seanad: Order of Business (21 Mar 2012)

Fidelma Healy Eames: I speak with some recent experience, as my son just completed transition year in our local school, Calasanctius College in Oranmore. While he had a good year, I see great merit in continued community service. There is no reason transition year cannot become a community service year under the tutelage of transition year co-ordinators and with rewards of points. In Singapore second level...

Seanad: Finance Bill 2012: Second Stage (21 Mar 2012)

Fidelma Healy Eames: It is true.

Seanad: Finance Bill 2012: Second Stage (21 Mar 2012)

Fidelma Healy Eames: Good.

Seanad: Order of Business (21 Mar 2012)

Fidelma Healy Eames: I found the weekend's proposal by the Friends of the Elderly on replacing transition year with a year of community service was interesting and thought provoking. Will the Leader arrange for a debate?

Seanad: Order of Business (15 Mar 2012)

Fidelma Healy Eames: It is timely to have a serious debate on the mortgage crisis in this House, especially in light of Patrick Honohan's words in the University of Limerick, where he appears to favour repossessions, if they must take place, taking place for over-indebted buy-to-let borrowers who can no longer service their debts. Have we come to a moment in time where we must now ask what is our priority? My...

Seanad: Order of Business (15 Mar 2012)

Fidelma Healy Eames: We are having a local event in Connamera. It has been asked in this House before if it is essential for a Minister to be in the House to answer a Private Members' motion.

Seanad: Order of Business (15 Mar 2012)

Fidelma Healy Eames: I have heard in previous debates that it was not necessary so I am asking that question.
