- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Education and Skills: The Future of STEM in Irish Education: Discussion (Resumed) (21 Mar 2023)
Pauline O'Reilly: That is an interesting point.
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Education and Skills: The Future of STEM in Irish Education: Discussion (Resumed) (21 Mar 2023)
Pauline O'Reilly: I thank the witnesses. I will focus on the equality aspect. The reason there had been a gender focus on STEM was because of those working in industries based on STEM subjects. However, as Professor Looney quite rightly said, we are in a different phase now. We are somewhat through a digital revolution and we are into a green revolution. That means that every single human must have that...
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Education and Skills: The Future of STEM in Irish Education: Discussion (Resumed) (21 Mar 2023)
Pauline O'Reilly: I have a few points about educators of our young STEM potential. A few things struck me. Thirty years ago, I ran a course across Europe for career guidance teachers at second level, which was run completely by female engineers, to try to address some of the gender bias that may have been there around the options students took. We are still talking about that. The informal set of...
- Seanad: Environmental Protection Agency (Emergency Electricity Generation) (Amendment) Bill 2023: Second Stage (9 Mar 2023)
Pauline O'Reilly: I thank the Minister of State for joining us today. I also thank his officials for providing a briefing for Senators on Monday. However, I have to say I was the only Senator who turned up to that briefing. I also want to thank the officials for briefing us last week at the Joint Committee on Environment and Climate Action. Perhaps the Senators who are in the Chamber today availed of last...
- Seanad: Environmental Protection Agency (Emergency Electricity Generation) (Amendment) Bill 2023: Second Stage (9 Mar 2023)
Pauline O'Reilly: Now.
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Climate Action: Inland Fisheries Ireland: Minister for the Environment, Climate and Communications (7 Mar 2023)
Pauline O'Reilly: I thank the Minister for coming before the committee today. This has been an ongoing issue for some time. It is quite clear that the issue goes back to well before the Deputy's time as Minister. People have come to me, I do not know if you could call it both sides, but people with different views on what the problems are in Inland Fisheries Ireland. I have taken the approach that one must...
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Climate Action: Inland Fisheries Ireland: Minister for the Environment, Climate and Communications (7 Mar 2023)
Pauline O'Reilly: That would mean they can be resolved and therefore we can only do what we can do now. There have been five resignations. Whatever the reasons for those, steps must be taken around the issue of reinstating a board of management. Otherwise, we will have continuing problems. That is what the Minister is here to discuss today. We have a role in that and it is a continuing role.
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Climate Action: Climate Action Plan 2023: Minister for Agriculture, Food and the Marine (2 Mar 2023)
Pauline O'Reilly: The very term "diversification" is about moving from one type of farming to another. You can do that in two ways. One is incentivising, while the other is supporting people to exit carbon-intensive farming. We all know that dairy farming is more carbon-intensive, certainly the larger dairy farms. Some, but not all, dairy farmers want to exit in order that they can move into another type...
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Climate Action: Climate Action Plan 2023: Minister for Agriculture, Food and the Marine (2 Mar 2023)
Pauline O'Reilly: And the scheme will be up and running?
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Climate Action: Climate Action Plan 2023: Minister for Agriculture, Food and the Marine (2 Mar 2023)
Pauline O'Reilly: So it will be by the start of 2024.
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Climate Action: Climate Action Plan 2023: Minister for Agriculture, Food and the Marine (2 Mar 2023)
Pauline O'Reilly: The second issue I wish to raise is drainage. In particular, I wish to understand what the policy rationale is for allowing works under the environmental impact assessment regulations in respect of agriculture without the requirement for screening or permission for up to 15 ha of agricultural land, that is, drainage without any form of permission. Is there a policy rationale and if so, can...
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Climate Action: Climate Action Plan 2023: Minister for Agriculture, Food and the Marine (2 Mar 2023)
Pauline O'Reilly: While we are on that topic, the conversion of 5 ha of semi-natural land to agricultural land also does not need permission at the moment. Is this also being reviewed?
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Climate Action: Climate Action Plan 2023: Minister for Agriculture, Food and the Marine (2 Mar 2023)
Pauline O'Reilly: Does the Minister have a timeline?
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Climate Action: Climate Action Plan 2023: Minister for Agriculture, Food and the Marine (2 Mar 2023)
Pauline O'Reilly: I thank the Minister. To go back to the dairy industry, which I spoke about earlier, there is going to have to be some recognition that aggressive marketing of formula milk, both here and across the globe, supports this carbon-intensive form of agriculture to an extent that probably is not necessary and undermines breastfeeding. That aside, let me go back to ACRES. It has one main...
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Climate Action: Climate Action Plan 2023: Minister for Agriculture, Food and the Marine (2 Mar 2023)
Pauline O'Reilly: That is hugely important. It is not its sole function to reduce carbon but at the same time we need to see some figures on it. Even from the point of view of land use for biodiversity, we need to see what those figures are. I mentioned earlier that the requirement to have permission or screening on some land is not there at the moment. That is having a deep impact on biodiversity. All of...
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Climate Action: Climate Action Plan 2023: Minister for Agriculture, Food and the Marine (2 Mar 2023)
Pauline O'Reilly: I thank the Minister.
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Climate Action: Climate Action Plan 2023: Minister for Agriculture, Food and the Marine (2 Mar 2023)
Pauline O'Reilly: Yes. The non-ACRES piece is what I was asking for.
- Seanad: An tOrd Gnó - Order of Business (28 Feb 2023)
Pauline O'Reilly: I am going to speak about Rare Disease Day, which was mentioned by previous speakers, because it is important to do so. Even though 300,000 people in Ireland are obliged to deal with rare diseases, it is very difficult for individuals to advocate for any kind of intervention on their behalf. An alliance of the organisations involved is important. I am involved with Addison's Ireland. Very...
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Education and Skills: Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths, STEM, in Irish Education: Discussion (28 Feb 2023)
Pauline O'Reilly: I thank our guests for their opening statements. Mr. Irwin mentioned baseline data in his opening statement. It seems as if we do not even have the baseline data at this point. I know he has done data analysis from surveys as to how many people are not taking up positions, and that analysis is welcome. Are we not where we need to be in order for the implementation plan to take its course?...
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Education and Skills: Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths, STEM, in Irish Education: Discussion (28 Feb 2023)
Pauline O'Reilly: It absolutely did. However, when it comes to leaving certificate reform, which we have looked at, data have not been brought in over recent years. That has changed things a lot. It has changed things for leaving certificate reform and we can see that knock-back today. Things have changed fundamentally and we do not have the kind of data we need in order to see how we can put it all together.
