- Seanad: Sports Funding: Statements (21 Nov 2023)
Fintan Warfield: South Dublin County Council did not get a mention the first time so I am just putting it on the record.
- Seanad: Sports Funding: Statements (21 Nov 2023)
Fintan Warfield: We believe that the sports capital and equipment programme goes against the National Sports Policy 2018 - 2027. I would welcome the Minister of State's response on that one. Primarily I wish to advocate for a state-wide strategy for sports facilities but I will not take up any more time.
- Seanad: Vacant and Derelict Buildings: Motion [Private Members] (15 Nov 2023)
Fintan Warfield: I thought Senator McDowell was going to call for squatters' rights as a means to address the crisis in vacancy and the housing crisis but that would not track with his ideology. I thank the Labour Party Senators and I welcome former Senator, Billy Lawless. He was a great advocate for Irish America and the Irish diaspora. He is very missed here. I thank Senators Sherlock, Hoey, Moynihan and...
- Seanad: Vacant and Derelict Buildings: Motion [Private Members] (15 Nov 2023)
Fintan Warfield: I am not here to defend that initiative. The council's 2024 budget will be presented to councillors. It includes €10 million for houses or flats vacated by tenants but not in a condition to be re-let. That is a drop of €15 million on the 2023 budget and a drop of €25 million on the year before. I would welcome a Government response to The Irish Timesarticle last week....
- Seanad: Vacant and Derelict Buildings: Motion [Private Members] (15 Nov 2023)
Fintan Warfield: I have the floor. It has failed to achieve what it set out to do, which was to disincentivise the hoarding of empty homes. If it is to bring about cultural change, the tax must be set higher at a time house prices continue to rocket.
- Joint Committee on Tourism, Culture, Arts, Sport And Media: Development of Local and Community Arts: Discussion (Resumed) (15 Nov 2023)
Fintan Warfield: I thank all our guests. They are very welcome. It has been alluded to many times by us that arts and cultural engagement begin at home, at school or in the library, and consequently they are built on community activity. Therefore, it is really welcome that this committee is hearing about the issues facing the amateur sector in addition to the professional sector. I wish to ask Mr....
- Joint Committee on Tourism, Culture, Arts, Sport And Media: Development of Local and Community Arts: Discussion (Resumed) (15 Nov 2023)
Fintan Warfield: I ask Theatre Forum to respond also. It could be wise for the committee to ask the Minister for an update or progress report on basic income for artists in line with the Theatre Forum's suggestion. I served on the board of the Civic Theatre for many years and was very aware that the county council was the primary funder. The Arts Council funding, which amounted to much less than that of...
- Joint Committee on Tourism, Culture, Arts, Sport And Media: Development of Local and Community Arts: Discussion (Resumed) (15 Nov 2023)
Fintan Warfield: Fair play.
- Joint Committee on Tourism, Culture, Arts, Sport And Media: Development of Local and Community Arts: Discussion (Resumed) (15 Nov 2023)
Fintan Warfield: I am out of time but if there is a second round of questions, I will return to the issue of workspaces.
- Seanad: Ban on Dumping New Products Bill 2022: Committee Stage (8 Nov 2023)
Fintan Warfield: I welcome the Minister of State to the House. I also welcome my comrades from Trinity College Ógra Shinn Féin. There is a Trinity Senator here whom they can meet tonight. I will begin by commending my comrade, Senator Boylan, and Brian Marron in her office who have worked tirelessly and done a very good job on this issue. I do not want to go over issues that have been covered...
- Seanad: Housing For All: Statements (7 Nov 2023)
Fintan Warfield: I welcome the Minister to the House. He is welcome here, as ever. Recent Eurostat figures stated that 68% of people between the ages of 25 and 29 still live at home with their parents. In Denmark, I think it was 4%, in Finland, I think it was 5% and in Sweden, I think it was 6%. In Ireland, 68% of people between the ages of 25 and 29 still live in their childhood bedrooms. They can only...
- Seanad: Electoral (Amendment) (Voting at 16) Bill 2021: Second Stage (7 Nov 2023)
Fintan Warfield: I welcome the Minister of State to the House again today. I also welcome the people in the Public Gallery. They are folks from the NYCI, Wexford Comhairle na nÓg and a comrade of mine, James Stokes, a Sinn Féin candidate in Newbridge in County Kildare, who is 18 years of age and has come to the Seanad to witness this debate here today. This is a very interesting debate, which we...
- Seanad: An tOrd Gnó - Order of Business (26 Oct 2023)
Fintan Warfield: I commend Senator Clonan on his contribution. I ask the Deputy Leader to invite the Tánaiste primarily to the report from the forum on neutrality. I know that a further report will be published by the forum. Yesterday, in the Dáil, the Tánaiste and Minister for Defence reiterated his concern about the triple lock, which ensures that any deployment of more than 12 Defence...
- Seanad: Nithe i dtosach suíonna - Commencement Matters: Low Pay Commission (24 Oct 2023)
Fintan Warfield: I am grateful to the Cathaoirleach for selecting this Commencement matter and the Minister of State for coming to the House to discuss it. It involves a simple ask of the Government: when does it expect to receive the report of the Low Pay Commission on youth rates of the minimum wage? I ask the Minister of State to provide a clear timeline for publication of the report when he receives it....
- Seanad: Nithe i dtosach suíonna - Commencement Matters: Low Pay Commission (24 Oct 2023)
Fintan Warfield: I appreciate the Minister of State's response. There is no reason to believe that we will not have a report by Christmas, a year on from the commencement of the draft report. I failed to reference the issue of low pay for migrant workers and young workers, particularly women, since there is a gender aspect to this, as well as single parents, people with disabilities and people who face...
- Seanad: Situation in Israel and the Occupied Palestinian Territories: Statements (19 Oct 2023)
Fintan Warfield: Before the start of the Ireland-New Zealand rugby match last Saturday night, there was a minute's silence in the Stade de France. The crowd and the players stood for a minute's silence as a gesture of respect for all those who died. It became the norm across the rugby World Cup and carried with it much symbolism. It was for everyone and it was a condition that it was unconditional. It...
- Seanad: An tOrd Gnó - Order of Business (18 Oct 2023)
Fintan Warfield: For so long, the international community has facilitated the breach of international law, collective punishment and the confiscation of land. The EU has stood aside and watched as all of that happened in Palestine and under Netanyahu. The idea that fundamental geopolitical stances can be taken in Europe without any participation or accountability points, I am afraid to say, to something...
- Seanad: An tOrd Gnó - Order of Business (18 Oct 2023)
Fintan Warfield: The Chair has gone soft.

Fintan Warfield: I second the amendment.
