Seanad: Election of Cathaoirleach (29 Jun 2020)

Ned O'Sullivan: I want to wish you well. It is a signal honour for you and for your family, which served the national cause well. I am delighted that your father, Seán, and other members of your family are here today. It is a great honour for the county. I would say it is also a matter of tremendous delight for the many county councillors who have driven us all crackers over the last few days trying...

Seanad: Death of Former Member: Expressions of Sympathy (20 Nov 2019)

Ned O'Sullivan: Is onóir agus pribhléid domsa cúpla focal a rá anseo inniu mar gheall ar ár sean-chara Rory Kiely. Cuirim fáilte is fiche roimh chlann Rory agus a chairde go léir go dtí Seanad Éireann, áit ina rinne sé a dhícheall i gcónaí ar son na tíre, ar son an pháirtí agus ar son mhuintir Luimnigh. It is a privilege...

Seanad: Death of Former Member: Expressions of Sympathy (20 Nov 2019)

Ned O'Sullivan: Each of the party leaders trusted Rory's advice and they received good advice at all times. Former Taoiseach Brian Cowen was especially close to Rory and made a wonderful oration at his graveside last June.We think especially of Brian today and wish him continued recovery and good health into the future. It is great to see Deputy Cowen here and I ask him to convey our best wishes to Brian.

Seanad: Death of Former Member: Expressions of Sympathy (20 Nov 2019)

Ned O'Sullivan: The turnout at Rory's funeral was exceptional. It had to be, first as he never missed a funeral himself, and second as he knew everyone and everyone knew him.

Seanad: Death of Former Member: Expressions of Sympathy (20 Nov 2019)

Ned O'Sullivan: Good man. I saw the Leas-Chathaoirleach there. Rory had a fantastic interest in people and loved to be involved with them. It was not just for the votes, though we are all guilty of that to some extent. Rory was genuinely interested in people. He wanted to know their stories, what they were up to, what was going on with their families, and who was up to what. This stood to him...

Seanad: Death of Former Member: Expressions of Sympathy (20 Nov 2019)

Ned O'Sullivan: The great Francie. Rory's other great passion was racing, and it was in that sphere of activity that I knew him best. He was a great judge of a horse, as he was of pedigree cattle, and he lived very close to his great friends Cora and Charles Byrnes, the legendary trainer. Many is the good tip I got from Rory and-----

Seanad: Death of Former Member: Expressions of Sympathy (20 Nov 2019)

Ned O'Sullivan: -----many is the big coup he was involved in, though he might not always tell one about it. He was a lifelong member of the grand alliance racing syndicate which was made up of racing aficianados in the Dáil and Seanad. It mostly included Members from Fianna Fáil and Fine Gael, and the great Des O'Malley was involved as well. I welcome his daughter Fiona to the House. The...

Seanad: Death of Former Member: Expressions of Sympathy (20 Nov 2019)

Ned O'Sullivan: Arctic Copper, I would say.

Seanad: An tOrd Gnó - Order of Business (19 Nov 2019)

Ned O'Sullivan: I have two brief matters to raise. We are heading into the Christmas season. It is extraordinary how Christmas comes around earlier and earlier. One of these days, it will start before the Listowel races in September with the way it is going. I wish to remind people around the country about the importance of shopping locally at a time when so much money will be spent. I am not saying...

Seanad: An tOrd Gnó - Order of Business (19 Nov 2019)

Ned O'Sullivan: Politics is an honourable profession. We are all decent people. I have met very few people in politics who I do not like or admire. They are all doing a hard, thankless job. People think we are well-paid and so on but they do not look at the work rate that is involved. Why are we, as politicians, attacking each other on small personal issues which, though important in their own way, are...

Seanad: An tOrd Gnó - Order of Business (19 Nov 2019)

Ned O'Sullivan: I never attacked another politician in a personal way. I play my own ball. Let everyone play his or her own ball. We will be better and cleaner for it and we will be more respected for it.

Seanad: Nithe i dtosach suíonna - Commencement Matters: Planning Guidelines (6 Nov 2019)

Ned O'Sullivan: I am sorry to have interrupted the Minister but I wanted to ensure the Senator has a chance to respond. The Minister got good value for his money.

Seanad: Nithe i dtosach suíonna - Commencement Matters: Planning Guidelines (6 Nov 2019)

Ned O'Sullivan: I ask the Minister to keep his reply brief as we are almost out of time.

Seanad: Withdrawal of the United Kingdom from the European Union: Statements (6 Nov 2019)

Ned O'Sullivan: I am sure the Minister is glad to have something of a break. I am also sure he is not resting on his laurels, but at least he has a break from the frenzy of the negotiations that have taken place in the past few months. Fianna Fáil welcomes the fact that the European Union has agreed to a Brexit extension until 31 January 2020. There is no point in going back over the farcical...

Seanad: An tOrd Gnó - Order of Business (5 Nov 2019)

Ned O'Sullivan: Like the last speaker, I had not intended to contribute but came in to welcome our new colleague. However, Senator McDowell is to be complimented for raising a very big subject here. Before we all get into our various boxes on the left and on the right, we should pause and stand back and look at some of the points he has made. My instinct is probably not the same as his on this issue. We...

Seanad: An tOrd Gnó - Order of Business (5 Nov 2019)

Ned O'Sullivan: I have not been wrong yet.

Seanad: An tOrd Gnó - Order of Business (5 Nov 2019)

Ned O'Sullivan: Watch this space.

Seanad: Climate Action: Statements (5 Nov 2019)

Ned O'Sullivan: I will vacate the Chair for a couple of minutes to make a contribution. I thank Senator Humphreys for taking the Chair.

Seanad: Climate Action: Statements (5 Nov 2019)

Ned O'Sullivan: I thank Senator Humphreys for obliging me. It has been a very interesting debate, and I am going to confine myself to one particular aspect of it, which will not surprise anybody here, and that is the Shannon LNG project. I have been in the House 12 years and I think my maiden speech here asked the Government of the day to support that project and to put everything it could behind it. Here...

Seanad: Climate Action: Statements (5 Nov 2019)

Ned O'Sullivan: I thank the Minister. That concludes the debate. When it is proposed to sit again?
