Seanad: Order of Business. (9 May 2006)

Michael Finucane: I join in the expressions of sympathy for Máire Buckley, who was a native of Newcastle West. Many of the people of the town who know the Buckley family well were stunned by the news. She was a beacon of light in educational circles and was known for her work with the disadvantaged in the inner city. On a regular basis statistics are published on the numbers waiting for driving tests. Ireland...

Seanad: Order of Business. (9 May 2006)

Michael Finucane: Please allow me the same latitude as the previous speaker.

Seanad: Order of Business. (9 May 2006)

Michael Finucane: I am about to finish. I hope common sense prevails in the current partnership talks and that we do not have a stupid situation where a union will oppose a sensible proposition by the Minister. I support the Minister in what he is trying to do in this regard. If I was allowed the latitude, I would try to highlight the folly of taking politicians out of the equation.

Seanad: Order of Business. (3 May 2006)

Michael Finucane: A great deal of attention has been focussed on the register of electors over the last few days. The Minister for the Environment, Heritage and Local Government, Deputy Roche, has spoken about the issue. I do not think there is any more certainty on foot of his comment that the onus to carry out the work that is needed is strictly on local authorities. We are aware that changes to the register...

Seanad: Order of Business. (27 Apr 2006)

Michael Finucane: I listened with great interest to the debate on the electoral register in the other House. The latest register contains many inaccuracies, including the names of people who are deceased. Currently, voting papers are franked before voting and may subsequently be declared invalid because they were not properly franked. Returning officers should take an interest in this. Research should be done...

Seanad: Order of Business. (26 Apr 2006)

Michael Finucane: Some time ago in Limerick there was significant fundraising activity to establish a private facility for cancer sufferers. This is on the campus of the regional hospital and has been quite a success. It is staffed by a private hospital group providing a very effective service in the area. A few months ago in this House I requested of the Minister of State at the Department of Health and...

Seanad: Youth Affairs: Statements. (6 Apr 2006)

Michael Finucane: May I put the record straight? Senator Moylan referred to there being no Member of the Opposition in the House. I apologise as I had to leave to meet somebody. I am deputising for another Senator today.

Seanad: Child Care Services. (6 Apr 2006)

Michael Finucane: I thank Senator Brennan for sharing his time with me, and again I welcome the Minister of State to the House, in his new capacity. Senator Brennan and I attended a meeting, along with other public representatives, as regards these four projects in County Limerick. The principle espoused by everybody nowadays is voluntarism. Many of those involved in the four projects are there in a voluntary...

Seanad: Youth Affairs: Statements. (6 Apr 2006)

Michael Finucane: I was surprised the Minister of State did not refer to the content of a recent report, Inequality and the Stereotyping of Young People. The young are often portrayed by the media in the wrong context, with articles referring to joyriding, drug related activity and so on, which tarnish all young people. Though regrettable, this is proven by the report, which contains interviews with young...

Seanad: Youth Affairs: Statements. (6 Apr 2006)

Michael Finucane: Ten minutes is sufficient. The Minister of State must have talked for 25 minutes. Her speech sounded like a thesis for a PhD on youth activity.
