Seanad: Health (Regulation of Termination of Pregnancy) Bill 2018: Report and Final Stages (13 Dec 2018)

Paul Gavan: I genuinely appreciated the meeting yesterday and the genuine attempts made to reach agreement. We were not persuaded fully by the case made. All members of the committee heard that one cannot grade risk in terms of pregnancy because it changes so quickly. Therefore, Sinn Féin wishes to continue to support the amendment and press it.

Seanad: Order of Business (12 Dec 2018)

Paul Gavan: On behalf of Sinn Féin I extend our sympathy to the people of Strasbourg. As a member of the Council of Europe, I was absolutely horrified to hear that terror has struck the people of Strasbourg in the way that it did. It is important that this message goes out from across the Chamber. I wish to ask for a debate on our foreign policy with specific reference to our participation in...

Seanad: Order of Business (12 Dec 2018)

Paul Gavan: In 2016, the EU President, Jean-Claude Juncker, called for an EU security union with the end goal of establishing a European army. The basis of PESCO is that it obliges participating states to agree to the principle of a single force, to increasing their military spending to reach specific targets and to provide troops for EU combat missions. It is intriguing to see President Jean-Claude...

Seanad: Employment (Miscellaneous Provisions) Bill 2017: Report and Final Stages (12 Dec 2018)

Paul Gavan: I second the amendment. I welcome the Minister. I support what Senator Nash has said. I have come across the issue of underemployment regularly during my time as a trade union official. There was an interesting report published this week from Social Justice Ireland and it suggested a figure of well in excess of 100,000 workers. It is a major issue. Sinn Féin supports this Bill and...

Seanad: Health (Regulation of Termination of Pregnancy) Bill 2018: Committee Stage (10 Dec 2018)

Paul Gavan: Amendments Nos. 4 and 18 seek to insert the words “and consulted with her, where possible”. The voice of the person who needs an abortion is sorely lacking in the legislation. Throughout the referendum there were constant references to the need to trust women. We now have a chance to listen to them and include their voices in seeking these medical procedures. They are simple...
