Alternative Energy Projects (30 Nov 2010)

[42720/10]

Alternative Energy Projects (30 Nov 2010)

Joe Costello: I thank the Minister for his response, which in many ways indicates the point I was making. The pre-budget submission of the Irish haulage industry states that it is extremely disappointed with the amount of alternative fuel that has been made available and does not discern the provision of any viable alternative to them. At the same time, one should recall this is an industry through which...

Alternative Energy Projects (30 Nov 2010)

Joe Costello: Why can one not get a viable alternative fuel source to fossil fuel at present?

Alternative Energy Projects (30 Nov 2010)

Joe Costello: Given that no viable alternative to the carbon tax has been provided, is it not a punitive tax? Carbon emission targets have been set in the absence of a viable alternative. The haulage industry, which has experienced a drop of 40% in its activity already this year, is being penalised. Heavy fuel costs are being encountered within the industry, which is necessary for the distribution of...

Alternative Energy Projects (30 Nov 2010)

Joe Costello: When will it happen?

Alternative Energy Projects (30 Nov 2010)

Joe Costello: While we are waiting for the future, we need to do something about the present.

Alternative Energy Projects (30 Nov 2010)

Joe Costello: The record speaks for itself. We have set a short-term target of 10%, but we have achieved just 2.2%. I do not know how we will fulfil that target. We are importing half of it already. The haulage industry is simply not getting any assistance in reaching its targets. As this industry has huge fuel costs, it should be a priority for the Minister. I would like to know why it is not.

Leaders' Questions (30 Nov 2010)

Joe Costello: Sold out to the banks.

Social Welfare (Miscellaneous Provisions) (No. 2) Bill 2010: Second Stage (Resumed) (24 Nov 2010)

Joe Costello: I, too, welcome the opportunity to speak on this legislation, certain aspects of which I welcome. Undoubtedly, there is a need to consolidate the areas of employment, training, the social welfare system and job creation. Too often we forget what training is about. There should be something at the end of the training programme. Too many of the programmes in operation currently are short...

Social Welfare (Miscellaneous Provisions) (No. 2) Bill 2010: Second Stage (Resumed) (24 Nov 2010)

Joe Costello: That is the way it is currently. People are supposed to pre-register with the Private Residential Tenancies Board.

Social Welfare (Miscellaneous Provisions) (No. 2) Bill 2010: Second Stage (Resumed) (24 Nov 2010)

Joe Costello: Yes, they are. Under the legislation, every landlord is obliged to register as a landlord before he or she does any business with anybody, private or otherwise. Whether the landlord takes public or private money, he or she is expected to register as a landlord under the Private Residential Tenancies Board legislation. I am quite satisfied that is the case. If it is not the case-----
