- Seanad: Order of Business (Resumed) (13 May 2009)
Liam Twomey: He said he is weighing it up as a value-for-money issue and that is what is happening. I have no doubt that what happened in Monageer could happen again. At this time there are children at risk of violence within the home from abusive parents involved in alcohol and drug abuse, and at risk of general neglect. No one is available out of hours or on weekends to protect them if anything happens.

Liam Twomey: The job of the Garda is not to kick in doors to see what is going on inside people's houses nor is it the job of the local parish priest or the doctor on night duty. That is the job of a trained professional. The Senator belittles the role social workers play and insults children with such comments.

Liam Twomey: I would also like a debate on the national children's hospital. A sum of â¬3.5 billion is being given to Allied Irish Banks while wards are being closed and children will not be treated in Crumlin children's hospital for the sake of â¬10 million. I would like answers to my questions rather than interruptions.

Liam Twomey: I wish to comment briefly on this issue, which is very important. We have been through recessions before and we have all made sacrifices before. It has been accepted always that the Protestant minority in this country has a particular ethos which has been protected since the foundation of this State despite all the trials and tribulations we have experienced. The support given by the State...
- Seanad: Hospital Services. (7 May 2009)
Liam Twomey: I know Senator John Paul Phelan will support me fully on this issue. I want the Minister of State, Deputy Kelleher, in his reply on behalf of the Minister for Health and Children, Deputy Harney, to make clear there has been no attempt to downgrade the accident and emergency services at Wexford General Hospital. Some concerns have been expressed recently that an attempt would be made to...
- Seanad: Hospital Services. (7 May 2009)
Liam Twomey: I would like to clarify something the Minister of State said. There are excellent staff at Wexford General Hospital and it is a centre of excellence. I would ask the Government to stop using this term, "centres of excellence", as if hospitals were not centres of excellence apart from those specified as such. The services provided by Wexford General Hospital are of the highest standard. We...

Liam Twomey: Yesterday in the House, the impartial role of individuals working for the public broadcasting service and other media interests was raised. It probably warrants a debate to see how much this affects people's day to day work, given the scandalous remarks that were made. For instance, if we look at some of the people who work for the public broadcaster, they include Miriam O'Callaghan whose...

Liam Twomey: If we are saying anything negative about these individuals we should refrain from using their names, but if we are not saying anything negative about them it should not matter because their good names are not being taken in vain.
- Seanad: Order of Business (7 May 2009)

- Seanad: Order of Business (7 May 2009)
Liam Twomey: We can mention it.
- Seanad: Order of Business (7 May 2009)
Liam Twomey: It is on the Order of Business. We can say that the person who was political editor of the Irish Independent prior to the general election got a job with the Government after the general election. Some of the political correspondents who currently work in Leinster House are either married to or connected to close family members who are standing for Fianna Fáil in the coming elections....

- Seanad: Order of Business (7 May 2009)
Liam Twomey: If we need to have a debate on that, the Leader should facilitate it. That sort of blackguarding is an insult to democracy. We should be bigger and more open than that.
