Paudie Coffey: I welcome the Coastal Concern Alliance delegation and thank them for their comprehensive document. They could probably have provided us with more information but the way they outlined it has made it simple for us to understand. It is helpful as we consider all the information before us. I acknowledge the concerns raised about the management of coastal zones, the policies involved and the...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Environment, Culture and the Gaeltacht: Heads of Maritime Area and Foreshore (Amendment) Bill 2013: Discussion (Resumed) (19 Nov 2013)

Paudie Coffey: Does Ms Freeman agree with that statement that the 40% target has been widely queried? Does she believe it should be queried or that it should not be set at that? Why is that item in the document on page five?

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Environment, Culture and the Gaeltacht: Heads of Maritime Area and Foreshore (Amendment) Bill 2013: Discussion (Resumed) (19 Nov 2013)

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Environment, Culture and the Gaeltacht: Heads of Maritime Area and Foreshore (Amendment) Bill 2013: Discussion (Resumed) (19 Nov 2013)

Paudie Coffey: My question is similar to Deputy Corcoran Kennedy's and has been answered. I wish to give a good example of developing aquaculture around our shores whereby various Departments examine the possibility of exploiting the sector from an economic perspective. Mr. Carvill has clarified that the service does not play a role in decision-making and provides guidance, advice or expertise to the...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport and Communications: Future funding of Public Service Broadcasting: Discussion with Representatives of the Broadcasting Authority of Ireland (13 Nov 2013)

Paudie Coffey: I will try not to go over old ground. I welcome the BAI. This has been an important and good debate. We need to continue it, as it is in everyone's interests to have a sustainable, fit-for-purpose public broadcasting service. The BAI has an important role to play in that regard. I will mention some of the challenges facing the television sector. I do not know the BAI's opinions, but...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Environment, Culture and the Gaeltacht: Heads of Maritime Area and Foreshore (Amendment) Bill 2013: Discussion (12 Nov 2013)

Paudie Coffey: I thank Dr. Lysaght for attending the committee to outline his views on the Bill and for outlining for the committee the role of the data centre and its importance to the sustainability of our wildlife and biodiversity. I realise now that I had reason to engage with the data centre a while ago and I have a little story to tell in a moment in that regard. Dr. Lysaght welcomes the fact that...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Environment, Culture and the Gaeltacht: Heads of Maritime Area and Foreshore (Amendment) Bill 2013: Discussion (12 Nov 2013)

Paudie Coffey: I know the data centre engages with schools also, but as it has only limited resources, I am sure it finds this difficult. Perhaps the committee should consider at another time how we could assist in this area. Biodiversity and the living environment are key issues. Schools have access to broadband and smartboards and could readily access the portal mentioned. I am sure Dr. Lysaght has...

Paudie Coffey: I would like to ask a question that occurred to me in the context of the introduction of new regulations for septic tanks. We all want to clean up the environment. We all want to ensure there are very high standards. The EPA is responsible for dumping at sea. Does it regulate local authority pipes that go out to sea? Does it have any involvement in that?

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Environment, Culture and the Gaeltacht: Heads of Maritime Area and Foreshore (Amendment) Bill 2013: Discussion (12 Nov 2013)

Paudie Coffey: I apologise for my late arrival, but I was in the Dáil Chamber. I missed the initial part of Mr. Lynott's presentation. I wish to follow on from the Chairman's questions on enforcement. Does the EPA work in concert with other agencies, such as the navy and the local authorities? Does the EPA depend on the interaction with other agencies?
