Committee on Transport and Communications: Select Sub-Committee on Transport, Tourism and Sport: Estimates for Public Services 2014
Vote 31 - Department of Transport, Tourism and Sport (Revised)
(23 Jan 2014)

Dessie Ellis: With regard to capital projects are public private partnerships, PPPs, being taken up? Some outstanding capital projects have reduced in price considerably and probably need to be re-examined. If there was a link to the airport, passenger numbers would increase massively over time. I welcome what the Minister stated about Irish Rail prices and special offers. Rail prices in this country...

Committee on Transport and Communications: Select Sub-Committee on Transport, Tourism and Sport: Estimates for Public Services 2014
Vote 31 - Department of Transport, Tourism and Sport (Revised)
(23 Jan 2014)

Dessie Ellis: In many ways, this is one of the disappointing areas. I acknowledge that the Minister must balance his budget but the lack of capital projects such as the metro north project must be borne in mind. I know the Minister's response in this regard. Expenditure on local and regional roads this year is to be €330 million. A considerable amount is required. As the Minister said, there...

Committee on Transport and Communications: Select Sub-Committee on Transport, Tourism and Sport: Estimates for Public Services 2014
Vote 31 - Department of Transport, Tourism and Sport (Revised)
(23 Jan 2014)

Dessie Ellis: I only wanted to ask about the impact of the regional airports subsidy, which is down by €1 million. Shannon and Knock airports seem to have increased passenger numbers but, as far as I know, in many of the regional airports the numbers have gone down or are static. Has the Minister some way of gauging that and if there is a problem, can we look again at the subsidy at some stage?...

Order of Business (23 Jan 2014)

Dessie Ellis: The Minister, Deputy Varadkar, recently stated legislation is required to use as evidence in court records of motorway speed checks using number recognition. Will the Tánaiste outline whether this has been considered? What legislation is required and under what Act?

Charities (Amendment) Bill 2014: Second Stage (Resumed) [Private Members] (22 Jan 2014)

Dessie Ellis: Tá sé thar am Bille mar seo a chur os comhair na Dála. Throughout the history of this State charitable and voluntary organisations have been instrumental and central to the provision of essential services and supports. These works have served both the wider population and smaller groups of people with special needs not served by the State. This State has always been in...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport and Communications: Tendering of Bus Services: National Transport Authority (22 Jan 2014)

Dessie Ellis: We are talking about the new hackney licence. How will it be judged? Will there have to be a number of areas across the country rather than one or two places where the process is applicable? Will there have to be a plan?

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport and Communications: Tendering of Bus Services: National Transport Authority (22 Jan 2014)

Dessie Ellis: I thank Mr. Murphy and his staff for their presentation. He mentioned the benefit to consumers. The greatest benefit to consumers would be a proper public transport system. Dublin Bus passenger numbers are beginning to increase and that appears to be working. The Deloitte study and the Finglas corridor have been mentioned. The Finglas corridor was chopped to bits. The two No. 19 routes...

Order of Business (21 Jan 2014)

Dessie Ellis: There is huge inconsistency in vehicle clamping throughout the country with different management companies and local authorities operating their own schemes. The regulation of vehicle immobilisation Bill will provide some consistency in the private clamping industry. When will this be published? I reiterate the question posed by my party leader regarding Margaretta D'Arcy.
