- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Agriculture, Food and the Marine: Hemp Industry: Discussion (27 Apr 2022)
Martin Browne: On the last point, have we even got a figure on how many hemp blocks have been imported?
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Agriculture, Food and the Marine: Hemp Industry: Discussion (27 Apr 2022)
Martin Browne: This brings me back to what I asked earlier. While responsibility is left under the Department of Health, we will never be able to build up the industry. There is so much uncertainty. Farmers will not have the confidence to invest to increase the crop yield enough to make blocks or insulation. Therefore, we will have to continue importing the material.
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Agriculture, Food and the Marine: Hemp Industry: Discussion (27 Apr 2022)
Martin Browne: Yes, but the farmers are just not producing enough to make it viable.
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Agriculture, Food and the Marine: Hemp Industry: Discussion (27 Apr 2022)
Martin Browne: To build the industry, should responsibility remain with the Department of Health or would it grow quicker and better, and be viable, if it were transferred to the Department of Agriculture, Food and the Marine? Can the witnesses give an opinion on that?

- Home Heating Fuels: Motion (Resumed) [Private Members] (26 Apr 2022)
Martin Browne: In the midst of a cost-of-living crisis of fuel supply insecurity and price hikes, the Minister, Deputy Eamon Ryan, wants to ban the sale of turf from September. Since that came out, it has been one long fiasco after another. After showing complete disregard for the 9% of rural households in this country who depend on turf to heat their homes, it quickly went to the Minister making...
- Written Answers — Department of Transport, Tourism and Sport: Rail Network (26 Apr 2022)
Martin Browne: 157. To ask the Minister for Transport, Tourism and Sport his views on the benefits that more focused strategic planning to ensure a minimum level of rail services and standards for rural and regional railways would have for rural Ireland and for regional connectivity; his further views on extending public service obligation services to foster greater development in and use of these rail...

[20112/22]
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Agriculture, Food and the Marine: Afforestation and the Forestry Sector: Discussion (13 Apr 2022)
Martin Browne: I just have one question. I too welcome the witnesses. We hear the problems they are facing in their area. Are they in contact with other areas around the country that are having the same problems, for example, with county councils in Tipperary or Cork? Is it the same problem that is being encountered right across the country or, as Senator Paul Daly asked, is it unique to the...
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Agriculture, Food and the Marine: Afforestation and the Forestry Sector: Discussion (13 Apr 2022)
Martin Browne: The findings of the Mackinnon report have not been implemented, or are being partially implemented. This is disturbing because we have heard about it time and again here. The Minister of State's opening statement is before me and she speaks about woodland working groups and how most of the issues identified are being addressed. There is talk that it will take time to train and bed in...
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Agriculture, Food and the Marine: Afforestation and the Forestry Sector: Discussion (13 Apr 2022)
Martin Browne: Some €1,000 per hectare was given for 1,600 ha cleared under the original ash dieback scheme, but the process cost several thousand euro, so the scheme was clearly inadequate. Now we are seeing rising costs of diesel and so on. What impact does that have on the ability of foresters to deal with incidents of ash dieback when the contribution of the scheme is already so inadequate?...
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Agriculture, Food and the Marine: Afforestation and the Forestry Sector: Discussion (13 Apr 2022)
Martin Browne: The Minister of State said she thinks she knows of the frustration out there but I do not think she does. We listen to it on a continuous basis from farmers, stakeholders and the whole lot. One particular problem is consultation between departments and so on. People tell us that from the time they submit applications, they hear nothing from the Department and they do not know when it is...
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Agriculture, Food and the Marine: Afforestation and the Forestry Sector: Discussion (13 Apr 2022)
Martin Browne: I wish to come back to the ash dieback because, again, it is just not being resolved. I have a list of here and I will just give one example. They have had issues with the ash dieback for four years. They first reported it on 14 March 2018. As the initial reconstituting and underplanting scheme, RUS, was disbanded, they tried to address the problem through the woodland improvement scheme....
