Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport and Communications: Proposed Merger: Irish Sports Council and National Sports Campus Development Authority (19 Feb 2014)

John O'Mahony: I have a number of questions, but the delegates can send the answers to the committee later because we are under time pressures. Reference was made to schools and universities being closed, but is that also true for the Athlone regional centre?

John O'Mahony: Legal issues were also mentioned. For the purposes of transparency, I ask the delegates to provide details of the amounts of money spent on legal fees by their organisations in recent years. I also ask them to provide details of the amounts spent on consultancy fees. These are topical issues and I ask them to forward the answers to the committee as soon as possible. I thank the...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport and Communications: Proposed Merger: Irish Sports Council and National Sports Campus Development Authority (19 Feb 2014)

John O'Mahony: I agree with Mr. Treacy on that issue. Earlier Mr. Mulvey mentioned betting and the fact that there is so much betting on sport, apart from horse racing or whatever. I took from what he said that betting should provide a stream of funding. Does he view it as a solution? Does he think that sports sponsorship by alcohol companies should not be ended? Is betting the solution?

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport and Communications: Proposed Merger: Irish Sports Council and National Sports Campus Development Authority (19 Feb 2014)

John O'Mahony: That would be like going from the frying pan into the fire.

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport and Communications: Proposed Merger: Irish Sports Council and National Sports Campus Development Authority (19 Feb 2014)

John O'Mahony: I thank Mr. Treacy. I have visited Abbotstown a couple of times in recent months. I was impressed by the amount of activity, the number of new facilities and the advances made therein. Pitches will be opened in the near future by the FAI and the GAA. The visuals on the ground are good. Before handing over to members, I might ask a couple of questions. The witnesses have given an...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport and Communications: Proposed Merger: Irish Sports Council and National Sports Campus Development Authority (19 Feb 2014)

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport and Communications: Scrutiny of EU Legislative Proposals (19 Feb 2014)

John O'Mahony: We will deal with No. 8, scrutiny of EU legislative proposals. COMS (2013) 512 is a proposal for a directive of the European Parliament and of the Council on package travel and assisted travel arrangements, amending Regulation (EC) No. 2006/2004, Directive 2011/83/EU and repealing Council Directive 90/314/EEC. It is proposed that this proposal does not warrant further scrutiny. However, as...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport and Communications: Proposed Merger: Irish Sports Council and National Sports Campus Development Authority (19 Feb 2014)

Topical Issue Debate: Maternity Services (18 Feb 2014)

John O'Mahony: I thank the Ceann Comhairle for selecting this matter for debate and also thank the Minister for his attendance. The worst thing one can have is speculation started by leaks, which is suddenly taken as being the truth. I firmly believe that is the case here. The suggestion that Mayo General Hospital, Portiuncula and Sligo will have their maternity units closed is totally off the wall. I...

Topical Issue Debate: Maternity Services (18 Feb 2014)

John O'Mahony: I welcome the assurances given by the Minister but I wish to reiterate that all this speculation is unfair. I welcome any reviews that will increase or improve on the already great care that is provided in Mayo General Hospital. I have seen at first hand the wonderful care that is given. Unless we nail it now, this kind of scaremongering is damaging for staff morale as well as causing...

Other Questions: Sporting Events (18 Feb 2014)

John O'Mahony: I very much welcome the progress that has been made and compliment the Minister of State and the Minister, Deputy Leo Varadkar, on the initiative. It is a demonstration of how sport unifies, North and South. In addition to the IRFU, other sports bodies such as the GAA will be involved. Twenty or 40 years ago that would not have been possible. Will the committee be composed of...

Other Questions: Sporting Events (18 Feb 2014)

John O'Mahony: 108. To ask the Minister for Transport, Tourism and Sport if he will provide an update on the proposed bid for the Rugby World Cup; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [7619/14]
