Committee on Transport and Communications: Select Sub-Committee on Transport, Tourism and Sport: Rationale for Sanctioning Energy Price Increases: Discussion with Commission for Energy Regulation (11 Dec 2013)

Paudie Coffey: What about the questions on the water?

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport and Communications: Rationale for Sanctioning Energy Price Increases: Discussion with Commission for Energy Regulation (11 Dec 2013)

Paudie Coffey: What about the questions on the water?

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport and Communications: Rationale for Sanctioning Energy Price Increases: Discussion with Commission for Energy Regulation (11 Dec 2013)

Paudie Coffey: I thank Mr. Nolan for his response. It is helpful and it is an important element of information to contribute to the wider debate on energy security and the cost of electricity. CER has a very important role to play in that.

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport and Communications: Rationale for Sanctioning Energy Price Increases: Discussion with Commission for Energy Regulation (11 Dec 2013)

Paudie Coffey: I thank the witnesses for coming before the committee and for their presentation. Where more competition exists with suppliers, does it follow that unit prices are lower? There is much debate about wind generation, alternative renewable energy and so on. We also hear that we are importing nuclear energy from the UK. Perhaps the witnesses can clarify if that is the case.

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport and Communications: Rationale for Sanctioning Energy Price Increases: Discussion with Commission for Energy Regulation (11 Dec 2013)

Paudie Coffey: If there is any detail on the cost of electricity that is generated by wind energy, versus traditional oil generation and-or possible imported nuclear energy, can Mr. Nolan explain who the CER arrives at a price taking all of that into account? In arriving at the unit price, does the CER consider the wider competitiveness of the economy and the social affordability when setting prices? One...

Written Answers — Department of Finance: Tax Exemptions (11 Dec 2013)

Paudie Coffey: 51. To ask the Minister for Finance his plans to sanction a similar exemption from income tax to the annual allowance of €1,000 paid to volunteer members of the Garda Reserve to other volunteer members of the emergency services such as the Coast Guard; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [53360/13]

Electricity Infrastructure: Motion (Resumed) [Private Members] (4 Dec 2013)

Paudie Coffey: I, too, welcome the opportunity to contribute to this debate. It is the responsibility of every public representative to advocate and relay on the floor of the Dáil the concerns he or she is hearing from constituents. I have already placed many of these concerns on the public record, at both Dáil and Oireachtas committee level. Many constituents were in contact with me this...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport and Communications: Electricity Transmission Network: Discussion with EirGrid (4 Dec 2013)

Paudie Coffey: Is that information available publicly? This is generalities again, but is that specific information available to the public?

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport and Communications: Electricity Transmission Network: Discussion with EirGrid (4 Dec 2013)

Paudie Coffey: I have seen the stage one report. The public cannot understand why a route would not be taken on a public corridor, such as a motorway or a national road. That is not dealt with anywhere in the stage one report. EirGrid goes across country. It dismisses it and moves on. Unless EirGrid practically and specifically carries out a cost-benefit analysis on the options that are available for...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport and Communications: Electricity Transmission Network: Discussion with EirGrid (4 Dec 2013)

Paudie Coffey: In the cost-benefit analysis that is conducted after the consultation it is important to look specifically at the DC, with full information on cost, routes and everything.

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport and Communications: Electricity Transmission Network: Discussion with EirGrid (4 Dec 2013)

Paudie Coffey: I welcome the engagement with EirGrid and thank the witnesses for the presentation. It is important for public confidence and public information that this engagement continues at every level. I wish to take it a step back to before the consultation period and the very formation of the Grid25 strategy, as well as its strategy. I understand this was adopted in 2008. The witnesses have...

Committee on Environment, Culture and the Gaeltacht: Select Sub-Committee on the Environment, Community and Local Government: Local Government Bill 2013: Committee Stage (3 Dec 2013)

Paudie Coffey: On the devolved power, I welcome the fact that the Minister has listened to his colleagues in the Fine Gael Party who have been lobbying for this on behalf of various local authorities and that he proposes to introduce an amendment in this regard. The legacy rates issue is a matter of concern. The Minister may or may not be aware that I introduced a Private Members' motion on this matter....

Committee on Environment, Culture and the Gaeltacht: Select Sub-Committee on the Environment, Community and Local Government: Local Government Bill 2013: Committee Stage (3 Dec 2013)

Paudie Coffey: I have a query about the impact of the Valuation Act 2001. I understand what the Minister is trying to achieve in the amalgamated valuation list. The Minister referred earlier to an entire council area being taken over by one local authority. He will be aware that the city and county councils in Waterford are amalgamating. The Minister is on record as saying that in that scenario he would...

Committee on Environment, Culture and the Gaeltacht: Select Sub-Committee on the Environment, Community and Local Government: Local Government Bill 2013: Committee Stage (3 Dec 2013)

Paudie Coffey: I thank the Minister for his clarification. Perhaps the committee might take up this issue as it is going to affect other local authorities and is related to the Valuation (Amendment) Bill 2012. Perhaps the Minister, Deputy Howlin, could be invited to this committee at a future date to discuss the implications of that legislation.

Committee on Environment, Culture and the Gaeltacht: Select Sub-Committee on the Environment, Community and Local Government: Local Government Bill 2013: Committee Stage (3 Dec 2013)

Paudie Coffey: I wish to add my concern on the 50% rebate. I presume that the Minister is trying to achieve consistency across all local authorities but, where there are vacant properties in Waterford city, for example, the situation might not be the same as that in Dublin or Cork, where there is high demand and high levels of business. In Waterford, city centre locations are struggling and I am not sure...

Committee on Environment, Culture and the Gaeltacht: Select Sub-Committee on the Environment, Community and Local Government: Local Government Bill 2013: Committee Stage (3 Dec 2013)

Paudie Coffey: Unsurprisingly, some stated that it was an essential source of revenue for their budgets, but the reality for businesses on the ground in the current economic climate means that imposing these rebates might not be suitable. Local councillors in the new local authorities would be best placed to decide on whether a 50% rebate should apply in their areas.

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport and Communications: EirGrid: Discussion with Chairman Designate (3 Dec 2013)

Paudie Coffey: Good faith or poor judgment?

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport and Communications: EirGrid: Discussion with Chairman Designate (3 Dec 2013)

Paudie Coffey: It is a matter of such significance.

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport and Communications: EirGrid: Discussion with Chairman Designate (3 Dec 2013)

Paudie Coffey: Mr. O'Connor accepts the judgment of the court, but he does not feel his judgment at that particular time was wrong. In that context, how appropriate is his appointment at this stage?

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport and Communications: EirGrid: Discussion with Chairman Designate (3 Dec 2013)

Paudie Coffey: I thank the Chairman.
