- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport, Tourism and Sport: Safety of School Transport Bus Fleet: Road Safety Authority (24 Oct 2018)
Frank Feighan: The witnesses have a very onerous and responsible duty, but I wish them well.
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on the Implementation of the Good Friday Agreement: North South Implementation Bodies: InterTradeIreland and Tourism Ireland (11 Oct 2018)
Frank Feighan: I will try not to go over ground already covered. I thank the witnesses for their presentation. The increase in trade and so on over the past 20 years is remarkable and I hope it continues. Mr. Gough referred to low-value exports. What are those? Are they agricultural products? What can we do to protect the cross-Border supply chain when Brexit takes place? I had other questions but...
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on the Implementation of the Good Friday Agreement: North South Implementation Bodies: InterTradeIreland and Tourism Ireland (11 Oct 2018)
Frank Feighan: What is considered low value? Is it milk or other agricultural produce, for example?
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on the Implementation of the Good Friday Agreement: North South Implementation Bodies: InterTradeIreland and Tourism Ireland (11 Oct 2018)
Frank Feighan: It does, yes.
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on the Implementation of the Good Friday Agreement: North South Implementation Bodies: InterTradeIreland and Tourism Ireland (11 Oct 2018)
Frank Feighan: What can we do to protect supply chains?
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on the Implementation of the Good Friday Agreement: North South Implementation Bodies: InterTradeIreland and Tourism Ireland (11 Oct 2018)
Frank Feighan: I thank Mr. Gibbons for his submission. It is good news all around for the island of Ireland. I have a few questions. I congratulate the witnesses on the direct air links to Beijing, with Hainan Airlines, and to Hong Kong. These links are hugely significant for the island of Ireland. We need to do a lot more. We should be very proud of Ryanair and Aer Lingus because they provide value...
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on the Implementation of the Good Friday Agreement: North South Implementation Bodies: InterTradeIreland and Tourism Ireland (11 Oct 2018)
Frank Feighan: It is not mine. There are two "T"s that have certainly brought the people of the island together. These are Titanic Belfast, which has brought people from the Republic to see Belfast for the first time, and Tayto Park, which has brought more people from-----
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on the Implementation of the Good Friday Agreement: North South Implementation Bodies: InterTradeIreland and Tourism Ireland (11 Oct 2018)
Frank Feighan: I am referring to the real Tayto Park. What these two projects have done is bring people from various parts of the island who normally would not have travelled. People from the North who were never in the Republic come to Tayto Park. We should be very proud of it and of Titanic Belfast.
- Seanad: Order of Business (9 Oct 2018)
Frank Feighan: Last Saturday in the Guild Hall in Derry in solidarity with my colleagues I attended a commemoration to mark the 50th anniversary of the civil rights march. I was delighted to meet Pat Hume, wife of John Hume, and many others. It was a very moving cross-community event, at which President Higgins received a standing ovation for his speech on civil rights which ranged from poverty,...
- Seanad: Budget 2019: Statements (9 Oct 2018)
Frank Feighan: I welcome the Minister of State, Deputy D'Arcy, and commend today's budget. In his budget speech, the Minister for Finance, Deputy Donohoe, said that for the first time in a decade we have balanced our books. As a result, we are more secure as a country and better able to care for people and families. I have been a Member of these Houses for more than 16 years and I remember the first few...
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport, Tourism and Sport: General Scheme of the Airport Noise Regulation Bill 2018: Discussion (3 Oct 2018)
Frank Feighan: Mr. Gallagher talked about a bespoke noise regulation. It is encouraging that Fingal County Council has the expertise and competence for it. What other options did the Department consider? Were there other options? I understand that in areas throughout Europe local authorities have also been used. Were other options open to the Department, other than using Fingal County Council?
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport, Tourism and Sport: General Scheme of the Airport Noise Regulation Bill 2018: Discussion (3 Oct 2018)
Frank Feighan: What other options did the Department consider?
- Seanad: Order of Business (3 Oct 2018)
Frank Feighan: Yesterday morning I attended breakfast at a fringe event of the Conservative Party conference, while a week before I was at a breakfast for a fringe event of the British Labour Party conference. I was very concerned to hear statements that the Good Friday Agreement could be changed. The Irish Government will stand up for the Good Friday Agreement and it is not up for negotiation. We want a...
- Seanad: Order of Business (26 Sep 2018)
Frank Feighan: Brexit is looming very large and we are coming to the end game. Brexit is bad news for the island of Ireland, the UK and the EU. I was at the Labour Party conference in Liverpool for the last two days and was encouraged to see the party coming out with some sort of position. Yesterday, the party said it would look at a referendum option where no final deal emerges from Parliament. That...
- Seanad: Order of Business (20 Sep 2018)
Frank Feighan: I read with much joy that the English FA, the Irish FA, the Welsh FA, the Scottish FA and the FAI are looking at bidding for the 2030 World Cup. It would be a five-way bid. This is hugely significant, especially after we were not successful in getting the Rugby World Cup. In 2002, we were looking at the European Championships for the island. This sends out a signal that we are able to...
- Seanad: Project 2040 and Transport Matters: Statements (20 Sep 2018)
Frank Feighan: I welcome the Minister to the House. I took great interest in Project Ireland 2040 - Linking People and Places when it was launched in June. There are many elements of the plan which are both necessary and welcome. I particularly welcome the fact that the plan refers to an investment of €53 million in greenway infrastructure between 2019 and 2021. However, I have a difficulty....
- Seanad: Project 2040 and Transport Matters: Statements (20 Sep 2018)
Frank Feighan: I know who objected to the hotel and the objection was due to the lesser horseshoe bat. Droppings were found under the tower where the hotel was to be located. The lesser horseshoe bat had never been seen north of Athlone but it stopped a development worth €100 million. Had it gone ahead, Boyle would now be a major tourist attraction. It is frustrating and annoying. I ask the...
- Seanad: Order of Business (19 Sep 2018)
Frank Feighan: I went out to meet ex-members of the Defence Forces who had a coherent and loud message for Government that they wanted better conditions. It is something as a member of Government I certainly support. I hope the Government can see a way to working towards getting better conditions for people who have effectively held the line in difficult times and who have represented our country around...
- Seanad: Mental Health (Renewal Orders) Bill 2018: Order for Second Stage (19 Sep 2018)
Frank Feighan: I move: "That Second Stage be taken today."
- Seanad: Mental Health (Renewal Orders) Bill 2018: Second and Subsequent Stages (19 Sep 2018)
Frank Feighan: I know that the Government is very anxious to expedite this emergency legislation. Senator Wilson has rightly said that this has cross-party support. Much work has been done and many parties have come together to make sure we get what is best for the patient. The Bill is a response to the finding by the Court of Appeal in June that section 15(3) of the Mental Health Act 2001 is...
