Joint Oireachtas Committee on Education and Skills: The Future of STEM in Irish Education: Discussion (Resumed) (18 Apr 2023)

Pauline O'Reilly: It is interesting and exciting. Are there any other comments?

Seanad: Nithe i dtosach suíonna - Commencement Matters: Schools Administration (29 Mar 2023)

Pauline O'Reilly: I really wish I was not in the Chamber this morning raising this issue. It is a bit ridiculous at this stage. I have stood on the picket lines with schools secretaries. They are the beating heart of schools. They found it really difficult to leave their workplace and go out on the picket lines. They were delighted that they reached a pay deal with the support of Fórsa and yet here...

Seanad: Nithe i dtosach suíonna - Commencement Matters: Schools Administration (29 Mar 2023)

Pauline O'Reilly: There is nothing new in this response. I still have no clarity on what will happen to the school secretaries this summer. That is really their main concern at this point. In addition, I do not want to get started on circulars and the way the Department deals with schools. The Minister of State is saying a small number of schools have not responded. It may be voluntary for school...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Climate Action: Nature Restoration Law and Land Use Review: Discussion (28 Mar 2023)

Pauline O'Reilly: I thank all the witnesses for their opening statements. There seems to be a little doubt cast on some of the science around rewetting. If the witnesses could be convinced of that science, would they then be prepared to say that it needs to happen, or is it the case that it is actually rewetting that they have an issue with, regardless of what the science says? I am just trying to...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Climate Action: Nature Restoration Law and Land Use Review: Discussion (28 Mar 2023)

Pauline O'Reilly: That was not really the question, though.

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Climate Action: Nature Restoration Law and Land Use Review: Discussion (28 Mar 2023)

Pauline O'Reilly: What we are really saying here is that regardless of accepting or not accepting the science, it is fundamentally about economics. I am not saying that is a bad thing, but I am just trying to get to the nub of the issue.

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Climate Action: Nature Restoration Law and Land Use Review: Discussion (28 Mar 2023)

Pauline O'Reilly: That is an important point.

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Climate Action: Nature Restoration Law and Land Use Review: Discussion (28 Mar 2023)

Pauline O'Reilly: The point I am making is that Mr. Condon is not against rewetting if the science proves that rewetting is the thing to do.

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Climate Action: Nature Restoration Law and Land Use Review: Discussion (28 Mar 2023)

Pauline O'Reilly: Is it correct to say that is not the science but the rewetting and as a result, the viability of the land, that is causing concerns?

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Climate Action: Nature Restoration Law and Land Use Review: Discussion (28 Mar 2023)

Pauline O'Reilly: There are environmental consequences for all farming from climate change.

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Climate Action: Nature Restoration Law and Land Use Review: Discussion (28 Mar 2023)

Pauline O'Reilly: Absolutely. We always hear that point clearly. I take that on board but it would be great to hear also the other side where the farming bodies are recognising and supporting the view that it will deeply impact farmers if we do not move forward some of these measures. My point is both sides have to be part of the conversation. I wonder whether Mr. McDonnell agrees with that.

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Education and Skills: The Future of STEM in Irish Education: Discussion (Resumed) (21 Mar 2023)

Pauline O'Reilly: I thank everyone for their contributions. There is a lot there and it is quite specific, which is good for us when we are putting our report together. It could be divided into two, in the sense that one is about access to STEM subjects and then the second bit is about the issues around their delivery in schools. In terms of the access piece, Mr. Convey referred to co-educational schools....

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Education and Skills: The Future of STEM in Irish Education: Discussion (Resumed) (21 Mar 2023)

Pauline O'Reilly: Does Mr. Convey mean the Department itself rather than PISA?

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Education and Skills: The Future of STEM in Irish Education: Discussion (Resumed) (21 Mar 2023)

Pauline O'Reilly: That is unreal.

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Education and Skills: The Future of STEM in Irish Education: Discussion (Resumed) (21 Mar 2023)

Pauline O'Reilly: I thank Mr. Convey.

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Education and Skills: The Future of STEM in Irish Education: Discussion (Resumed) (21 Mar 2023)

Pauline O'Reilly: I thank Mr. Jones. I did have a final question but I can come back to it.

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Education and Skills: The Future of STEM in Irish Education: Discussion (Resumed) (21 Mar 2023)

Pauline O'Reilly: It is a chock-a-block curriculum.

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Education and Skills: The Future of STEM in Irish Education: Discussion (Resumed) (21 Mar 2023)

Pauline O'Reilly: That is really what Mr. Duffy is saying and that is the reason.
