Joint Oireachtas Committee on Jobs, Enterprise and Innovation: Companies Registration Office: Discussion (15 Dec 2021)

Ollie Crowe: Those responses are welcome. I note it was pointed out in the opening statement that it is a criminal offence to provide false information to the CRO. Obviously, as with any law, that is only a deterrent when it is being enforced. I appreciate the CRO has made a number of referrals to the Director of Corporate Enforcement in recent months since this issue gained attention. Can one of the...

Seanad: An tOrd Gnó - Order of Business (8 Dec 2021)

Ollie Crowe: I very much welcome the approval by An Bord Pleanála yesterday for the Galway city outer ring road. This has been long promised for Galway, going back decades at this stage. It is frightening that every other city, Cork, Limerick, Waterford, Dublin and smaller areas and towns have developed their road network, yet we have been left in the ha’penny place. Traffic is such an...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Jobs, Enterprise and Innovation: Skills Needed to Support the Economic Recovery Plan: Discussion (8 Dec 2021)

Ollie Crowe: I thank Dr. Donohoe and Dr. Power for their time this morning and the expert group for a very good briefing document. As we are aware, SMEs face increasingly competitive markets, especially those in certain sectors such as retail. In the global world that we live in, it is difficult for SMEs to survive and grow. I note that the background briefing highlights upskilling management and...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Jobs, Enterprise and Innovation: Skills Needed to Support the Economic Recovery Plan: Discussion (8 Dec 2021)

Ollie Crowe: I thank the witnesses. When they have gathered the data, they might give the percentage of SMEs that are engaging. It would be helpful. The background briefing highlights the employer's place in improving soft skills for graduates or new entrants to the jobs market. I notice recent comments from Dr. Donohoe. He referred to the leaving certificate and the points race. There are...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Jobs, Enterprise and Innovation: Skills Needed to Support the Economic Recovery Plan: Discussion (8 Dec 2021)

Ollie Crowe: I will be brief as I understand the lads are under pressure. Regarding the report and the shortage of skills in the tourism and hospitality sector, that has been relevant in recent months. I ask the witnesses to outline a timeframe for me in that regard. I understand the expert group on future skills needs, but there does not seem to be an associated timeline and it does not seem to be on...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Jobs, Enterprise and Innovation: Skills Needed to Support the Economic Recovery Plan: Discussion (8 Dec 2021)

Ollie Crowe: Absolutely.

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Jobs, Enterprise and Innovation: Skills Needed to Support the Economic Recovery Plan: Discussion (8 Dec 2021)

Ollie Crowe: I could not agree more. There is a great shortage of chefs across the country, area managers for hotels and restaurants, etc. I fully understand the point Mr. Donohoe is making regarding labour shortages versus skills shortages. I do not expect a full answer, but I would like Mr. Donohoe at least to give me some hope concerning a timeframe. I thank Mr. Donohoe.

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Jobs, Enterprise and Innovation: Skills Needed to Support the Economic Recovery Plan: Discussion (8 Dec 2021)

Ollie Crowe: I would just like if Mr. Donohoe could come back in for one second, if possible, please.

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Jobs, Enterprise and Innovation: Skills Needed to Support the Economic Recovery Plan: Discussion (8 Dec 2021)

Ollie Crowe: I thank the Chair.

Seanad: Covid-19 and the New Measures (Enterprise, Trade and Employment): Statements (7 Dec 2021)

Ollie Crowe: I welcome the Tánaiste to the House. I wish to welcome the comments from the Government in general that these new restrictions can be removed quickly if we gather more information and data on Omicron and it emerges that it is not as threatening as originally feared. The Tánaiste, in his contribution, set that out. We are all aware that the hospitality and live entertainment...

Seanad: Finance Bill 2021: Second Stage (7 Dec 2021)

Ollie Crowe: I welcome the Minister of State to the house. In fairness he has been here on a number of occasions at this stage. I welcome the tax changes in the Bill. With inflation and rising prices in many areas it is essential that the Government reduce the tax burden for people, as this Bill does. The budget is also progressive in that those on the highest incomes will gain the least while the...

Seanad: Nithe i dtosach suíonna - Commencement Matters: Antisocial Behaviour (1 Dec 2021)

Ollie Crowe: I welcome the Minister of State to the Chamber. When is it expected the report from the export forum on antisocial behaviour will be received, in light of the increasing incidence of antisocial behaviour throughout the country, including Galway, my home city, but also other cities such as Dublin, Cork, Waterford and Limerick? There have been issues with antisocial behaviour, which has...

Seanad: Nithe i dtosach suíonna - Commencement Matters: Antisocial Behaviour (1 Dec 2021)

Ollie Crowe: I thank the Minister of State for his very positive comments in regard to public spaces. They are for the enjoyment of all our people. I welcome his comments on Eyre Square in particular. It is very positive that nearly €7 million has been set aside and that the Minister of State is working with the Minister for Public Expenditure and Reform. The biggest issue is the visibility of...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Jobs, Enterprise and Innovation: Sectoral Employment Order (Electrical Contracting Sector) 2021: Discussion (1 Dec 2021)

Ollie Crowe: I will share the time with Deputy Flaherty. I have a few questions. I thank the Minister of State for his briefing. I welcome that Ms Coogan and Ms Maher are present to answer any questions following on from his briefing. The amendment is much needed and very welcome. The Minister of State outlined in his contribution that the legislation would be passed by 1 February. I seek...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Jobs, Enterprise and Innovation: Sectoral Employment Order (Electrical Contracting Sector) 2021: Discussion (1 Dec 2021)

Ollie Crowe: That is fine on the first one but could Ms Coogan explain what flexibility is involved in the process? I am concerned in that regard.

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Jobs, Enterprise and Innovation: Sectoral Employment Order (Electrical Contracting Sector) 2021: Discussion (1 Dec 2021)

Ollie Crowe: I would appreciate it if Ms Coogan could do that. I will hand over to Deputy Flaherty now.

Seanad: An tOrd Gnó - Order of Business (24 Nov 2021)

Ollie Crowe: I raise this morning the issue of jail sentences given to those convicted of burglary. There was a case recently in my own constituency in Galway where the Director of Public Prosecutions, DPP, appealed the sentence given to a man who had committed multiple burglaries including one in the home of an 83-year-old woman when she was present, which happened in mid-2020. The Court of Appeal...

Seanad: An tOrd Gnó - Order of Business (24 Nov 2021)

Ollie Crowe: I thank the Cathaoirleach. As we are all aware, burglaries are one of the most horrific crimes, given the impact that they have on the victims. The home is sacred for our people and is a place of comfort and security and is a person’s castle. That can be wiped out very quickly by such burglaries. This has a crippling and chilling impact on the victims of these crimes, reducing the...

Seanad: An tOrd Gnó - Order of Business (24 Nov 2021)

Ollie Crowe: I thank my colleague, Senator Malcolm Byrne, for the support. I am a little confused. As you outlined, a Chathaoirligh, I was referring to the leniency of the particular cases. I did not refer to a specific case, but said it in general. It is an issue in Galway city and county, as you are aware, but it is also an issue across the country. I am still not clear about why I was not allowed...
