Committee on Public Petitions: Office of the Ombudsman Annual Report 2022 and Related Matters: Discussion (11 Jul 2024)

Pat Buckley: I thank our guests and it is great to see them here again. Guests attending some committees may feel like they are being interrogated but this committee is a bit different. I want to discuss the In Sickness and in Death report published in April 2023. Mr. Deering, in his statement today, said it was an investigation into medical treatment in the EU, EEA and the UK. A number of...

Committee on Public Petitions: Office of the Ombudsman Annual Report 2022 and Related Matters: Discussion (11 Jul 2024)

Pat Buckley: I certainly will.

Committee on Public Petitions: Office of the Ombudsman Annual Report 2022 and Related Matters: Discussion (11 Jul 2024)

Pat Buckley: I was trying to be polite.

Committee on Public Petitions: Office of the Ombudsman Annual Report 2022 and Related Matters: Discussion (11 Jul 2024)

Pat Buckley: I look forward to the Ombudsman's report. No matter what situation we are discussing, it seems to be the case that if communication breaks down, everything breaks down. Without having a conversation, nothing will happen. I am very happy to come back to Mr. Deering's office with details of the case I raised. I have one more question, if the Cathaoirleach will allow it.

Committee on Public Petitions: Office of the Ombudsman Annual Report 2022 and Related Matters: Discussion (11 Jul 2024)

Pat Buckley: Absolutely.

Committee on Public Petitions: Office of the Ombudsman Annual Report 2022 and Related Matters: Discussion (11 Jul 2024)

Pat Buckley: Mr. Deering said in his opening statement: "To ensure public bodies respect the dignity and worth of every individual interacting with them, we developed a guide for staff of the Office of the Ombudsman in 2023..." Has that guidance been rolled out? Sometimes, people come into our offices to talk about how terribly they were treated by such-and-such an organisation. They describe people...

Committee on Public Petitions: Office of the Ombudsman Annual Report 2022 and Related Matters: Discussion (11 Jul 2024)

Pat Buckley: None other than thanking Mr. Deering. It has always been a pleasure. Some committees think it is a bashing competition, but we like to try to make it as progressive as we can. When you open up the art of conversation, it is amazing what things you can do and the things that can happen. The Chair mentioned Uisce Éireann. Its to-and-fro servicing, even with us as elected...

Committee on Public Petitions: Decisions on Public Petitions Received (11 Jul 2024)

Pat Buckley: Yes, Chair, I want to make a brief comment. I know the building and it is an eyesore. In fairness to this lady, she has ticked every box that she is supposed to and she does not seem to be getting any help, at any angle. We are the petitions committee - the last resort. Could we also write to the relevant Minister and flag this lady's case? We need to find out, once and for all, who is...

Committee on Public Petitions: Decisions on Public Petitions Received (11 Jul 2024)

Pat Buckley: That is agreed. We will just have to wait until that comes back.

Committee on Public Petitions: Decisions on Public Petitions Received (11 Jul 2024)

Pat Buckley: -----and ask him for an update-----

Committee on Key Issues affecting the Traveller Community: Traveller Accommodation (Resumed): Department of House, Local Government and Heritage (11 Jul 2024)

Pat Buckley: The bonus is that a Cork fella speaks much faster. We will get much more in in a shorter bit of time. I will follow on from one or two things. Deputy Ó Cuív spoke about making Traveller-specific accommodation exempt from the planning process. Would the Minister of State agree with a suggestion like that to expedite things? That is my first question. The Minister of State...

Committee on Key Issues affecting the Traveller Community: Traveller Accommodation (Resumed): Department of House, Local Government and Heritage (11 Jul 2024)

Pat Buckley: As for the options of either trailers or modular homes, have modular homes been looked at? I suspect they would be far better value and longer lasting than trailers. It about educating people that there is an option in this regard. It might be a better, more suitable and more permanent option. Have the modular homes been looked at?

Committee on Key Issues affecting the Traveller Community: Traveller Accommodation (Resumed): Department of House, Local Government and Heritage (11 Jul 2024)

Pat Buckley: Can the Minister of State comment on the case of the family whose medical needs mean their accommodation is unsuitable? This involves a child with autism.

Committee on Key Issues affecting the Traveller Community: Traveller Accommodation (Resumed): Department of House, Local Government and Heritage (11 Jul 2024)

Pat Buckley: The family are not taking things for granted. While they are very happy where they are, those little changes would make life easier and make those problems disappear, basically. I thank the Minister of State.
