Joint Committee on Tourism, Culture, Arts, Sport And Media: Transparency of RTÉ Expenditure of Public Funds and Governance Issues: Discussion (Resumed) (5 Jul 2023)

Peter Fitzpatrick: Sorry, I will go back to this again. Have previous auditors, before Grant Thornton, brought to light anything disguised previously? Was there anything that came up before the Ryan Tubridy one? Basically, I am asking is there anything out there that we should know that will come forward? They got auditors to sign off. What were the auditors looking to sign off?

Joint Committee on Tourism, Culture, Arts, Sport And Media: Transparency of RTÉ Expenditure of Public Funds and Governance Issues: Discussion (Resumed) (5 Jul 2023)

Peter Fitzpatrick: They did audits, right?

Joint Committee on Tourism, Culture, Arts, Sport And Media: Transparency of RTÉ Expenditure of Public Funds and Governance Issues: Discussion (Resumed) (5 Jul 2023)

Peter Fitzpatrick: I am sure there were audits done before the Ryan Tubridy issue.

Joint Committee on Tourism, Culture, Arts, Sport And Media: Transparency of RTÉ Expenditure of Public Funds and Governance Issues: Discussion (Resumed) (5 Jul 2023)

Peter Fitzpatrick: I am not trying to be smart. It was easy enough to find. How come the previous auditors could not find the discrepancies? I cannot understand that. Who signed them off? If an auditor comes to Mr. Collins and signs them off, who in RTÉ would sign off and accept the sign-offs?

Joint Committee on Tourism, Culture, Arts, Sport And Media: Transparency of RTÉ Expenditure of Public Funds and Governance Issues: Discussion (Resumed) (5 Jul 2023)

Peter Fitzpatrick: But someone goes to the board and recommends them to the board on behalf of RTÉ. Is that Mr. Collins's good self? Does Mr. Collins look at the audit? After the audits are done, who looks at the audits? I have my own company. I get people in to do the audits. I am sure that someone in RTÉ signs the audits off and recommends them to the management to accept.

Joint Committee on Tourism, Culture, Arts, Sport And Media: Transparency of RTÉ Expenditure of Public Funds and Governance Issues: Discussion (Resumed) (5 Jul 2023)

Peter Fitzpatrick: There is something wrong here. In fairness, we keep teasing. Let us hope over the next few weeks that it comes out. Did someone in RTÉ, after five years, hand a car in yesterday? Who was that?

Joint Committee on Tourism, Culture, Arts, Sport And Media: Transparency of RTÉ Expenditure of Public Funds and Governance Issues: Discussion (Resumed) (5 Jul 2023)

Peter Fitzpatrick: If the Committee of Public Accounts asks Mr. Lynch tomorrow, will he answer the Committee of Public Accounts tomorrow?

Joint Committee on Tourism, Culture, Arts, Sport And Media: Transparency of RTÉ Expenditure of Public Funds and Governance Issues: Discussion (Resumed) (5 Jul 2023)

Peter Fitzpatrick: Was there a car handed in after five years yesterday?

Joint Committee on Tourism, Culture, Arts, Sport And Media: Transparency of RTÉ Expenditure of Public Funds and Governance Issues: Discussion (Resumed) (5 Jul 2023)

Peter Fitzpatrick: Was it Mr. Lynch's car?

Joint Committee on Tourism, Culture, Arts, Sport And Media: Transparency of RTÉ Expenditure of Public Funds and Governance Issues: Discussion (Resumed) (5 Jul 2023)

Peter Fitzpatrick: This is the last question. Regarding RTÉ and the Renault - and then the Tubridy - contract, why was it signed off by a member of NK Management after the payment was made to Ryan Tubridy on 21 April 2023? Did Mr. Collins generate this docket after the fact to make the payment? My question is, why was this signed off on behalf of Mr. Tubridy? How come Mr. Tubridy did not sign it off?...

Joint Committee on Tourism, Culture, Arts, Sport And Media: Transparency of RTÉ Expenditure of Public Funds and Governance Issues: Discussion (Resumed) (5 Jul 2023)

Peter Fitzpatrick: I thank the Chair for her patience.

Ceisteanna ó Cheannairí - Leaders' Questions (4 Jul 2023)

Peter Fitzpatrick: Tomorrow we are due to debate the Second Stage of the Health (Termination of Pregnancy Services) (Safe Access Zones) Bill 2023. This legislation has been rushed through pre-legislative scrutiny and will be likely to be unconstitutional. Exclusion zones around abortion clinics exist in other countries, which provide the model for this proposed legislation. The logic behind these zones is to...

Ceisteanna ó Cheannairí - Leaders' Questions (4 Jul 2023)

Peter Fitzpatrick: The Taoiseach's reply has not allayed my concerns regarding the practicality of the Bill or the prohibition on expression. The Minister for Health, Deputy Stephen Donnelly, acknowledged in February 2022 that “We are pushing up against civil liberties when we do this.” We have already seen buyer’s remorse in the Chamber from Deputies who voted in favour of the hate...

Environmental Protection Agency Water Quality Report 2022: Statements (28 Jun 2023)

Peter Fitzpatrick: As humans, access to clean water is essential for our livelihoods, our economy and our wellbeing. Our rivers and lakes are home to hundreds of freshwater species while our estuaries and coastal waters remain a rich source of marine biology biodiversity, so clean water is also essential for nature to thrive. The water framework directive was adopted by member states throughout Europe,...

Pre-European Council Meeting: Statements (28 Jun 2023)

Peter Fitzpatrick: I am grateful for the opportunity to contribute to this debate in advance of the EU summit tomorrow and Friday. It is good to see the return of country reports and country-specific recommendations this year. These are key aspects of the European semester process and help to drive progress on structural reforms. Let me take this opportunity to thank the European Commission for its useful...

Ceisteanna ar Pholasaí nó ar Reachtaíocht - Questions on Policy or Legislation (28 Jun 2023)

Peter Fitzpatrick: Under the programme for Government, the target for decarbonising the transport sector is encouraging a modal shift away from travel by private car towards less carbon-intensive and more sustainable alternatives. The Minister, Deputy Eamon Ryan, has stated that micro-mobility options like e-scooters have an important role to play in this transition to a cleaner and greener society and...

Written Answers — Department of Health: Nursing Education (28 Jun 2023)

Peter Fitzpatrick: 174. To ask the Minister for Health if he will provide an update on the €9 million in additional supports promised to student nurses and midwives; when nurses and midwives will receive the €500 increase (details supplied); if this will be backdated; and if he will make a statement on the matter. Joint Committee on Tourism, Culture, Arts, Sport And Media: Transparency of RTÉ Expenditure of Public Funds and Governance Issues: Discussion (28 Jun 2023)

Peter Fitzpatrick: I apologise. I had to go to the Chamber earlier on, so if I ask a question that has already been asked, I apologise. First of all, I guarantee that nobody in this room has never made a mistake. If people made a mistake, they should put their hands up in the air and admit it. I have never seen that in the past week. It is a word called hatred. Many people are badmouthing RTÉ. In...

Joint Committee on Tourism, Culture, Arts, Sport And Media: Transparency of RTÉ Expenditure of Public Funds and Governance Issues: Discussion (28 Jun 2023)

Peter Fitzpatrick: Are any of the seven witnesses a personal friend of Dee Forbes? Do they socialise with her? Do they meet her? I am sure when one is working in a business, especially with 1,800 people, and wants to ask a few questions, sometimes it is handy to go outside RTÉ and have a cup of tea. Was any kind of socialising done whatsoever? I know she is off today because of sickness. One does not...
