- Written Answers — Waterways Ireland: Waterways Ireland (27 Sep 2007)
Éamon Ó Cuív: I understand from Waterways Ireland that the Royal Canal will be re-opened to navigation from Dublin to the River Shannon in 2009. Thereafter, Waterways Ireland proposes that, under the National Development Plan 2007-2013, it will undertake a feasibility study of the Longford Branch to assess both the technical and cost implications of restoring the branch line.

Éamon Ó Cuív: A report on the feasibility of providing roll-on roll-off transport services to the Aran Islands, The Aran Islands Ro-Ro Service Feasibility Study Report, was commissioned by my Department and can be accessed at its website at www.pobail.ie. The feasibility study was carried out by Saltire Management Ltd, a marine consultancy firm from Scotland, which has extensive experience in this sector....
- Written Answers — Irish Language: Irish Language (27 Sep 2007)
Éamon Ó Cuív: I propose to take Questions Nos. 45 and 108 together. The Linguistic Study of Irish Language Usage in the Gaeltacht has now been completed and a Report was presented to me earlier this year. My Department is evaluating the contents of this Report at present, as well as the recommendations that have been made as a result of this study, including recommendations in relation to the Gaeltacht...
- Written Answers — Departmental Programmes: Departmental Programmes (27 Sep 2007)
Éamon Ó Cuív: The RAPID Programme aims to ensure that priority attention is given to tackling the spatial concentration of poverty and social exclusion within the 46 designated RAPID areas. As I have indicated to the House on a number of occasions, it is a matter for individual Departments to report on the provision of funding and progress on delivery with respect to projects under their responsibility in...
- Written Answers — Irish Language: Irish Language (27 Sep 2007)
Éamon Ó Cuív: In line with the Government's commitment, as provided for in its Statement on the Irish Language launched in December 2006 and also in the Agreed Programme for Government, my Department is currently in the process of engaging consultants to assist in developing a 20-year Strategy for the Irish language. It is envisaged that the preparation of the Strategy will involve extensive consultation...
- Public Transport. (27 Sep 2007)
Éamon Ó Cuív: I congratulate the various spokespersons on their appointments. I look forward to working with them and Question Time being a useful way of debating on the floor of the House issues of major national importance. As Deputy Ring is aware, there are no public transport services in many rural areas at night. While such services are available in the more developed rural areas, by either hackney...
- Public Transport. (27 Sep 2007)
Éamon Ó Cuív: Unfortunately, progress has been slow. I was a little taken aback when the HSE stated my Department and I were engaged in discussions with it. I have discussed the matter with a senior executive of the HSE and a local transport group in an effort to identify how best we can bring together, in a co-ordinated fashion, the critical mass of the rural transport initiative and the requirement to...
- Public Transport. (27 Sep 2007)
Éamon Ó Cuív: My sentiments exactly. The HSE cut the service to the limit, leaving many in my constituency and others without a service. I approached the HSE about this matter a considerable time ago and the officials said they were sticking to their statement that they could only provide a limited service. I pointed out that I am always amazed that the HSE can make cutbacks but the amount saved is only...
- Clár Díláraithe. (27 Sep 2007)
Éamon Ó Cuív: Mar a thug mé le fios mar fhreagra ar cheisteanna sa Teach seo cheana, d'iarr mé ar bhord Fhoras na Gaeilge moltaà sonracha a dhéanamh maidir leis na céimeanna a bheadh i gceist chun poist a lonnú i nGaoth Dobhair, chomh maith leis na rannóga agus na feidhmeanna a bheadh lonnaithe ann. Ina dhiaidh sin, tÃolacadh aighneacht do mo Roinn féin agus an Roinn Cultúir, EalaÃon agus...
- Clár Díláraithe. (27 Sep 2007)
Éamon Ó Cuív: Is à sin an rud deiridh a chuirfidh moill ar seo. Tá 44 duine fostaithe i bhForas na Gaeilge faoi láthair, ach tá 65 post ceadaithe i bprionsabal, cuid acu sa Tuaisceart. Mar sin, tá spás ann le daoine eile a earcú. Fuaireamar plean le breis earcaÃochta a dhéanamh, ach bhà fadbhanna leis an bplean agus bhà sé ag dul anonn is anall. Tá plean leasaithe faighte againn anois....
- Clár Díláraithe. (27 Sep 2007)
Éamon Ó Cuív: Déarfaidh mé an fhÃrinne leis an Teachta â tá súil agam go mbeifear a rá faoi cheann cúig bliana go ndearna dhá cinneadh an-difrÃocht do Ghaoth Dobhair agus Gaeltacht TÃr Chonaill go hiomlán. Tá mé ag caint ar an gcéad dul sÃos mar gheall ar lonnú NUIG ann agus an comhréiteach a rinneadh le Ãdarás na Gaeltachta maidir leis an gcóirÃocht. Rinneadar an-jab ansin. Tá...
- Rural Recreation. (27 Sep 2007)
Éamon Ó Cuív: I propose to take Questions Nos. 6, 15 and 22 together. In its report on the national countryside recreation strategy, Comhairle na Tuaithe made recommendations. These were that the Attorney General be requested to examine restating and reflecting in legislation the current common law position regarding the protection of landowners' property rights where recreational access is allowed on...
- Rural Recreation. (27 Sep 2007)
Éamon Ó Cuív: I do not accept fully that one individual out of 20 will maintain a veto. The way this is bubbling from the ground up is that the vast majority of communities are now becoming involved in the whole walkways concept. They are coming to us having created walkways. These are rural communities, made up of farmers and others, coming forward with great ideas and driving the concept. That is the...
- Shannon Airport: Motion (27 Sep 2007)
Éamon Ó Cuív: Tá áthas orm deis a bheith agam cúpla focal a rá maidir le cinneadh Aer Lingus faoi Aerfort na Sionna. Caithfidh mé a rá, ar nós gach ball eile den Rialtas, go raibh an-dÃomá orm maidir leis an gcinneadh úd. Caithfimid socrú céard a dhéanfaimid faoi agus conas a dhéanfaimid cinnte go mbeidh seirbhÃsà cuimsitheacha ar fáil ó Aerfort na Sionna. I congratulate Ireland West...
- Shannon Airport: Motion (27 Sep 2007)
Éamon Ó Cuív: I am 30 years proving it.
- Shannon Airport: Motion (27 Sep 2007)
Éamon Ó Cuív: I do not regard it as one area seeking things at the expense of another but a collective decision by us as a people that all our people should share equally in the fruits of economic development and have equal opportunities in so far as possible.
- Shannon Airport: Motion (27 Sep 2007)
Éamon Ó Cuív: Like my colleagues in the House I was disappointed at the unilateral decision by Aer Lingus to move the slots to Belfast. Of course I welcome the development of service in Belfast but I believe this should not have happened at the expense of Shannon. Since the announcement I have received many calls asking me to make representations to the Government to force Aer Lingus to reverse its decision.
- Shannon Airport: Motion (27 Sep 2007)
Éamon Ó Cuív: In reply to the Deputy, these are the calls I received; I am not saying I agreed with them.
- Shannon Airport: Motion (27 Sep 2007)
Éamon Ó Cuív: I hope people will realise it is not possible to make Aer Lingus do this and that there could be no possible motivation for the Government not reversing Aer Lingus's decision if it were possible to do so. I have a firm belief that when a problem arises it is foolish to waste time on what might have been if decisions had been taken differently in the past. It is impossible to foresee...
- Shannon Airport: Motion (27 Sep 2007)
Éamon Ó Cuív: The quicker this is done when a problem arises, the better the chance one has of solving it. It is one of the greatest disservices to any region to sell it short.
