Joint Oireachtas Committee on Health and Children: Medicines and Medical Products: Discussion with Irish Medicines Board (24 Sep 2013)

Catherine Byrne: Can we, please, have a comment on the toxicity of devices?

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Health and Children: Medicines and Medical Products: Discussion with Irish Medicines Board (24 Sep 2013)

Catherine Byrne: I join with others in thanking the delegation from the IMB for making a presentation to us today. The issue of the cost of drugs is raised on a daily basis, and people are looking to buy drugs more cheaply. The State has lost significant revenue because of the importation of illegal drugs. It would be better to bring the cost of drugs down to a level at which people could buy them. The...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Health and Children: Work Programme, Disability Services and Related Issues: Discussion with HIQA (12 Sep 2013)

Catherine Byrne: Dr. Cooper's contributions are always thought provoking. My mother died after she contracted MRSA having spent just a week in a hospital but I did not think that hand hygiene could be the only thing that led to her demise. She went into the hospital on a Friday, we took her out of it the following Friday and she died at home two weeks later. She was eaten alive at home just two weeks...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Health and Children: Child and Family Agency: Discussion with Chairman Designate (23 Jul 2013)

Catherine Byrne: I want to make it clear to Ms Gibbons that I did not say I believed lone parents were bad parents, because I know many of them and I have contact with many lone parents through my work, particularly with regard to housing difficulties in Dublin, about which parents with two children, who are perhaps expecting another, come to see me. Many of the young parents I know are not the first...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Health and Children: Child and Family Agency: Discussion with Chairman Designate (23 Jul 2013)

Catherine Byrne: I thank Ms Gibbons for her presentation. Nobody in this room doubts her sincerity, capability and experience. I have only a few questions. How does she see the integration of the NEWB role within the new agency? Her presentation referred to the need for society to invest in preparing and supporting parents in a parenting and caring role. Coming from a voluntary community background, I...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Health and Children: Children and Youth Issues: Discussion with Minister for Children and Youth Affairs (18 Jul 2013)

Catherine Byrne: Did Mr. Breslin say that when St. Patrick’s Institution closes some of the clients will be going out to Oberstown? Has he any idea how many there will be?

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Health and Children: Children and Youth Issues: Discussion with Minister for Children and Youth Affairs (18 Jul 2013)

Catherine Byrne: May I comment on question No. 15? The Minister spoke about the issue.

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Health and Children: Children and Youth Issues: Discussion with Minister for Children and Youth Affairs (18 Jul 2013)

Catherine Byrne: I too welcome the new agency. Like Deputy Ó Caoláin I had intended to speak on the matter on Second Stage. Unfortunately, I had to leave the meeting to attend another one. When I returned to my office I discovered that it had finished, which was disappointing. I wish to raise some ongoing problems with the Minister. No parent sends his or her child to a preschool or...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Health and Children: Children and Youth Issues: Discussion with Minister for Children and Youth Affairs (18 Jul 2013)

Catherine Byrne: Private agencies try their best, employ staff and have a lot of overheads, but there is a gap in the market that needs to be filled. People who mind children in their homes should be regulated and brought into line with other child care establishments. Its not about charging more. I just want them to be properly regulated. Many grandparents are minding children because one or both...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Health and Children: Cochlear Ear Implants: Discussion (16 Jul 2013)

Catherine Byrne: What Ms O'Connor said a few minutes ago about the long-term effects for speech and language, education and people being made to feel a part of their workplace, is a seller on this. She could not have explained it any better.

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Health and Children: Cochlear Ear Implants: Discussion (16 Jul 2013)

Catherine Byrne: That was my question. Why can two implants not be done at the same time? What age would a child be when the implant is put in?

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Health and Children: Cochlear Ear Implants: Discussion (16 Jul 2013)

Catherine Byrne: I think a message should be sent to the Minister expressing our collective opinion on this, urging him to make the right decision in the budget.

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Health and Children: Cochlear Ear Implants: Discussion (16 Jul 2013)

Catherine Byrne: I thank the Happy New Ear campaign group for appearing before the committee. Blessed is Mr. Shay Kearns among women. The implant is the most amazing piece of technology and provides the gift of sound. For those of us who have the gifts of hearing and speech, it is very hard to imagine what it would be like to live without them. Did I pick up the figure correctly that 250 children or...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Health and Children: Cochlear Ear Implants: Discussion (16 Jul 2013)

Catherine Byrne: What budget would be required for this level of treatment? What age group would undergo surgery? If there is a cohort of young people already in the system, how are they being dealt with? I was not at the previous presentation but I would be very interested to learn what the Minister had to say to the delegates. We do not normally reconvene a meeting to meet groups on an ad hoc basis,...

Committee on Health and Children: Select Sub-Committee on Children and Youth Affairs: Estimates for Public Services 2013
Vote 40 - Office of the Minister for Children and Youth Affairs (Revised)
(10 Jul 2013)

Catherine Byrne: The Chairman jumped ahead but I had not turned my page. May I comment on subheads C6?

Committee on Health and Children: Select Sub-Committee on Children and Youth Affairs: Estimates for Public Services 2013
Vote 40 - Office of the Minister for Children and Youth Affairs (Revised)
(10 Jul 2013)

Catherine Byrne: My query also relates to subhead C5. Has the Minister any idea of how many grants have been availed of by organisations? How much grant funding has been paid out, particularly to organisations that work with young people? Is the figure stated in the Estimates the overall figure?

Committee on Health and Children: Select Sub-Committee on Children and Youth Affairs: Estimates for Public Services 2013
Vote 40 - Office of the Minister for Children and Youth Affairs (Revised)
(10 Jul 2013)

Catherine Byrne: Has the money been paid out?

Committee on Health and Children: Select Sub-Committee on Children and Youth Affairs: Estimates for Public Services 2013
Vote 40 - Office of the Minister for Children and Youth Affairs (Revised)
(10 Jul 2013)

Catherine Byrne: No, I just was not sure whether that was the figure.

Committee on Health and Children: Select Sub-Committee on Children and Youth Affairs: Estimates for Public Services 2013
Vote 40 - Office of the Minister for Children and Youth Affairs (Revised)
(10 Jul 2013)

Catherine Byrne: I have a reason to ask the Minister about the grant. Last year a playground needed a lot of improvements so I went to many local child care groups to ask would they apply for funding but none of them took up the offer which puzzled me. The playground is still in need of repair but it is in a park that belongs to the council. Does that have anything to do with it?
