Seanad: An tOrd Gnó - Order of Business (22 Jan 2019)

Frank Feighan: I join other Senators in absolutely condemning the wanton act of terrorism in Derry on Saturday night last. Thankfully, nobody was killed or injured but what happened shows that this is a dangerous time when it comes to dissident republicans. Everything must be done to ensure that they do not have a voice or threaten the Good Friday Agreement. Yesterday's centenary of the first meeting of...

Seanad: Order of Business (20 Dec 2018)

Frank Feighan: -----and Senators Lawlor and Marshall were elected on a cross-party basis and this is positive. We work together in the Seanad in a positive manner and they have brought their own views to this House and there is much to be said for it. Roscommon has certainly been in the news in the last two weeks. I live in Castlerea at the weekends and two weeks ago there was an incident there. Last...

Seanad: Order of Business (20 Dec 2018)

Frank Feighan: I also wish all my colleagues in the Oireachtas a peaceful Christmas and a prosperous new year as well as the hard working staff of the service who have done so much great work in the last year. I have been a Member of the Seanad since 2002 and it has certainly changed. It is not the same type of divisional Seanad. Some six or seven years ago, Senator Craughwell was the first person in the...

Seanad: Commencement Matters: Road Projects Status (19 Dec 2018)

Frank Feighan: I thank the Minister for taking up my invitation to discuss these important road schemes along the N4. As the Minister knows, the N4 is a major carriageway to the north-west region. It is a national primary road running from Dublin to the north west and Sligo. It goes without saying that the N4 is a vital artery to this region. There are three major schemes currently planned along the...

Seanad: Commencement Matters: Road Projects Status (19 Dec 2018)

Frank Feighan: There are a lot of projects that will contribute to this road, but we continue to look enviously at the motorways from Galway, Limerick, Cork, Waterford and Belfast to Dublin. The area certainly needs better links with the capital city. I am delighted that certain projects are earmarked in the 2040 plan and I thank the Minister for taking the time to come to the House to answer my questions.

Seanad: Order of Business (12 Dec 2018)

Seanad: Order of Business (12 Dec 2018)

Frank Feighan: I also extend my condolences to the people of France and Strasbourg. It was an awful shooting especially at Christmas time. We stand shoulder to shoulder with our French colleagues. As for the vote of confidence at Westminster today, the Prime Minister, Theresa May, has the respect of the Irish people and the British people. She has been formidable. I hope that cool heads will prevail in...

Seanad: Order of Business (11 Dec 2018)

Frank Feighan: I join my colleague, Senator O'Mahony, in congratulating Mullinalaghta GAA club. Its victory brought great joy and pride to every town, village and rural area around the country, and indeed to every city as well. It showed what can be done. I am talking about the spirit of Gaelic football, the club and the community and what that means. I come from a neighbouring county and I was in...

Seanad: Order of Business (6 Dec 2018)

Frank Feighan: I agree with Senator Conway-Walsh on hospital staff. We need to look at other ways of addressing the issue. Sometimes it is not about throwing money at a problem - it is about pooling resources. Everybody knows the good news story about the emergency department at Roscommon County Hospital, which is part of the Saolta group. Senator James Reilly was probably one of the best health...

Seanad: Social Welfare, Pensions and Civil Registration Bill 2018: Second Stage (6 Dec 2018)

Frank Feighan: I welcome the Minister of State. I am aware he has a great interest in this area. This is very important legislation which will provide a legislative basis for the increase in social welfare rates, including the €5 increase in the maximum rate of all weekly social welfare payments announced in the budget. I very much welcome that, and it has been broadly welcomed by people. An...

Frank Feighan: Next Tuesday.

Seanad: Order of Business (5 Dec 2018)

Frank Feighan: I thank the Cathaoirleach and all those who offered us good wishes. I agree with Senators McDowell and Norris. What is happening in Westminster has been impacting on our lives over the past three years and will do so like never before in the next few months. Mr. Dominic Grieve, MP, and many others have shown great leadership, vision and courage in trying to look at a situation that was...
