Seanad: Nithe i dtosach suíonna - Commencement Matters: Autism Support Services (26 Sep 2019)

Paul Gavan: I thank the Minister of State for his response. He referred to what has happened since the passing of the Education (Admission to Schools) Act 2018. Interestingly, the Government opposed the part of the Bill that gave the Minister those powers, and it was a combination of Sinn Féin, Fianna Fáil, the Labour Party and others that had it included in the legislation. I understand the...

Seanad: An tOrd Gnó - Order of Business (26 Sep 2019)

Paul Gavan: On the beef issue, as someone who tried to organise that sector for the best part of two years and will miss the debate next week, I would like, if I may, to make two points now. First, Jim Power, with whom I do not usually agree, made the point that we do not know the profits in the beef industry because a number of the key companies are private unlimited companies. Second - I say this...

Seanad: An tOrd Gnó - Order of Business (26 Sep 2019)

Paul Gavan: Well said.

Seanad: An tOrd Gnó - Order of Business (26 Sep 2019)

Paul Gavan: That is nonsense.

Seanad: Housing: Statements (26 Sep 2019)

Paul Gavan: Is it possible to get a copy of the Minister of State's statement?

Seanad: Housing: Statements (26 Sep 2019)

Paul Gavan: They were nice bankers.

Seanad: Housing: Statements (26 Sep 2019)

Paul Gavan: It is nice to see the Minister of State again. I do not know where to start. We got a copy of his speech a couple of minutes ago and it runs to nine pages. It is a long speech without one word about tenancy rights. In the middle of the biggest housing crisis in the history of the State, the Minister of State could not include one sentence about the rights of tenants.

Seanad: Housing: Statements (26 Sep 2019)

Paul Gavan: I am. I want to raise specifically the Government's ongoing failure to grant rights to tenants where the landlord is selling the house. It is a major issue that people raise in my clinic in Limerick every week. People are being given notice, turfed out and paying rents double what they were used to paying. I wonder if Fine Gael policy is based on the 2009 Disney film "Up". It as a...

Seanad: Housing: Statements (26 Sep 2019)

Paul Gavan: The Senator is better than that.

Seanad: Housing: Statements (26 Sep 2019)

Paul Gavan: Give tenants their rights.

Seanad: Relationships and Sexuality Education: Statements (25 Sep 2019)

Paul Gavan: The Minister is very welcome to the House. As one would expect, Sinn Féin welcomes the findings and recommendations of this report on relationships and sexual education. It has been 20 years since the curriculum was last updated. We have heard time and time again from students, staff, parents and stakeholders that the RSE curriculum is woefully outdated and that provision of sexual...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Education and Skills: Interim Report on Reduced Timetables: Minister for Education and Skills (24 Sep 2019)

Paul Gavan: I had a conversation yesterday with a parent whose child is six years of age and has access to one hour of school a day. That is what she has been offered. When she asked what she should do when she is in difficulty at home, she was advised to contact the Garda. I welcome that the Minister is here and I welcome the statement he made. It is important for him to acknowledge that his...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Education and Skills: Eligibility Criteria of Student Universal Support Ireland: Discussion (12 Sep 2019)

Paul Gavan: I thank the witnesses for their presentations. As has been said already, core funding is the issue here. Too many working families in particular are still excluded from many supports for their children to go to third level. That is the major problem and I appreciate that it is not something that can be addressed by the witnesses who are before the committee today. I am not going to repeat...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Education and Skills: School Costs: Discussion (12 Sep 2019)

Paul Gavan: I thank all the witnesses for their presentations. This issue does my head in. As can be guessed from my accent, I was born in London but in a working class community in London in 1970, I had free books. I also had a hot meal at school every day. That is two generations ago but here we are in 2019, discussing these issues. I agree with what the Chairman said earlier about this committee...
