- Saincheisteanna Tráthúla - Topical Issue Debate: Road Projects (19 Apr 2023)
Éamon Ó Cuív: Beidh sé deacair. Mar is eol don Leas-Cheann Comhairle, tá an obair seo ag teastáil go práinneach ar an mbóthar seo agus caithfidh mé cás láidir a dhéanamh. The N59, as a coastal national secondary route, was included in Transport 21. The idea was that those parts of the country that were far away from national primary routes would have...
- Written Answers — Department of Rural and Community Development: Rail Network (19 Apr 2023)
Éamon Ó Cuív: 186. To ask the Minister for Rural and Community Development the amount of money spent under the original CLÁR programme funding for the clearing of the railway line between Collooney in Sligo and Athenry in Galway by Iarnród Éireann; the years in which the work was carried out; if he will provide details of the work that was done and the issues encountered; and if she will...
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Social Protection: Pay-related Jobseeker's Benefit Scheme: Discussion (19 Apr 2023)
Éamon Ó Cuív: It is a very interesting proposal. There are a number of details I would like Mr. Hession will clarify or comment on. Those of us who work our constituency clinics assiduously find that there can be a great concept but with details in it that are very much at variance with the reality of lived lives. At the bottom of page 2 of the initial document, it is stated that in order to qualify, a...
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Social Protection: Pay-related Jobseeker's Benefit Scheme: Discussion (19 Apr 2023)
Éamon Ó Cuív: When I read through the proposal, I thought "Hang on a second." Many people are either in partnerships or couples, and this means that they are not entitled to jobseeker's allowance. This is an increasing phenomenon of unemployment at the moment when one person comes out of employment. They would have needed two incomes to survive, to pay mortgages, to put the kids through school and do...
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Social Protection: Pay-related Jobseeker's Benefit Scheme: Discussion (19 Apr 2023)
Éamon Ó Cuív: I will make one comment. As we know, lots of people are in relationships and do not have children. Many more people have children later in life than would have before. The measure of not having a dependant for the purposes of jobseeker's benefit is a kind of null set. It is invalid because claimants who have a working partner and no dependant children will not show up as having a...
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Social Protection: Pay-related Jobseeker's Benefit Scheme: Discussion (19 Apr 2023)
Éamon Ó Cuív: The word "potentially" was used but this would have to apply to everybody. For the example of the difference between six months and nine months, everybody would have to stay on jobseeker's benefit for the nine months.
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Social Protection: Pay-related Jobseeker's Benefit Scheme: Discussion (19 Apr 2023)
Éamon Ó Cuív: Yes, but there is mathematical potential for it, and the word "potentially" was carefully put in. My reading of it was that the next sentence had been forgotten and that, theoretically, potentially, there would be a cost. Fifty percent of six months is three months, and if we add that to the period, that presumes everybody will stay for the final three months.
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Social Protection: Pay-related Jobseeker's Benefit Scheme: Discussion (19 Apr 2023)
Éamon Ó Cuív: One of the straw man proposals is a floor, or minimum payment, of €100 a week. There is a minimum payment at present but it was set years ago. We seem to be resetting it at an incredibly low rate. What is the logic behind this? I would have thought that a minimum payment should be €200 a week. I think €220 is the basic jobseeker's allowance or jobseeker's benefit...
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Social Protection: Pay-related Jobseeker's Benefit Scheme: Discussion (19 Apr 2023)
Éamon Ó Cuív: It is very low.
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Social Protection: Pay-related Jobseeker's Benefit Scheme: Discussion (19 Apr 2023)
Éamon Ó Cuív: I agree with that. I think that when one puts bands in you do get distortions. There is no question about that. When there are finite limits, suddenly you are off.
- Ceisteanna Eile - Other Questions: Northern Ireland (18 Apr 2023)
Éamon Ó Cuív: 47. To ask the Tánaiste and Minister for Justice and Equality the discussions he and his Department have had with their counterparts in Northern Ireland on North-South justice issues since he became Minister; the progress made in this period; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [17285/23]
- Ceisteanna Eile - Other Questions: Northern Ireland (18 Apr 2023)
Éamon Ó Cuív: Will the Minister give an update on discussions he has had with his counterparts in Northern Ireland on North-South justice issues and the progress made in this period? Are we coming to an understanding on some of the outstanding issues?
- Ceisteanna Eile - Other Questions: Northern Ireland (18 Apr 2023)
Éamon Ó Cuív: As the Minister knows, I have been concerned for some time about the delay in the administration of justice in Northern Ireland. People are waiting up to nine years for trial. They are our citizens. I think the Minister would agree that is not justice and that justice delayed is justice denied. As well as that, there are people spending inordinate time on remand and, when they are out on...
- Ceisteanna Eile - Other Questions: Northern Ireland (18 Apr 2023)
Éamon Ó Cuív: The Independent Reporting Commission, IRC, is an independent commission set up by the Irish and British governments. In its most recent report, it spoke about possible elements of a group transition process. How are the discussions going on progressing the recommendations in that report on ending violence completely in Northern Ireland? Will the Minister give an update on that? It is an...
- Written Answers — Department of Justice and Equality: Paramilitary Groups (18 Apr 2023)
Éamon Ó Cuív: 84. To ask the Tánaiste and Minister for Justice and Equality the progress made to date by him and his Department in considering the most recent report of the Independent Reporting Commission in relation to paramilitary activity, and the means by which it might be reduced and eliminated; when it is hoped to action the recommendations in the report; and if he will make a statement on the...
- Written Answers — Department of Communications, Climate Action and Environment: Broadband Infrastructure (18 Apr 2023)
Éamon Ó Cuív: 171. To ask the Minister for Communications, Climate Action and Environment how it is possible for him to lay down, as a condition of providing broadband services, under the EU regulatory regime wherein telecommunication services are commercial, liberalised and competitive, that a uniform charge is charged for broadband services by each company across the State; and if he will make a...
- Written Answers — Department of Defence: Naval Service (18 Apr 2023)
Éamon Ó Cuív: 226. To ask the Taoiseach and Minister for Defence the number of naval ships that it is possible to put to sea at any one time at present due to staff shortages; whether it is intended to send a ship on duty abroad with either an EU mission or an UN mission; whether he is satisfied the remaining ships and available crew is adequate to secure Ireland's interest in our own territorial waters...
- Written Answers — Department of Finance: Business Supports (18 Apr 2023)
Éamon Ó Cuív: 369. To ask the Minister for Finance what support is available to new businesses that commenced business in the past 12 to 24 months under the business energy support scheme and that are facing very high energy bills; if there is no support, whether he intends amending the scheme to support these businesses; and if he will make a statement on the matter.
