Joint Oireachtas Committee on Education and Skills: Retention of Records Bill 2019: Discussion (26 Nov 2019)

Paul Gavan: I thank all the witnesses for their powerful testimonies. It is quite humbling to hear them. Much has been asked and answered today but I refer to what the Department of Education and Skills said about this legislation. It said its aim is to strike a balance between those who gave evidence to the commission and redress bodies against the need to ensure that as a society we never forget the...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Education and Skills: Retention of Records Bill 2019: Discussion (26 Nov 2019)

Paul Gavan: I completely agree with everything the witnesses have said. It comes back to power and accountability. It is shocking to hear that the State has never even requested that the issue of access to those records be part of those high-level discussions. What does that tell us about the Departments? I wish to clarify that Sinn Féin is opposed to the Bill. I will be opposing it.

Seanad: Death of Former Member: Expressions of Sympathy (20 Nov 2019)

Paul Gavan: I extend a welcome to the Kiely family and to the many people in the Visitors Gallery, particularly my neighbour Donie Cassidy who has been my good neighbour and friend for many years. I am not going to add to the comments. A wonderful series of speeches have been made on Senator Kiely. I have been asked specifically by my colleagues in the Sinn Féin Party in Limerick, particularly in...

Seanad: An tOrd Gnó - Order of Business (19 Nov 2019)

Paul Gavan: Earlier, at noon, I met a good colleague of mine, Eddie Mullins from SIPTU. He was in Leinster House to hand in a letter to the Minister for Finance, Deputy Donohoe. I am referring to a topic that has been raised countless times in this Chamber, on all sides, which is the despicable treatment meted out to community employment, CE, supervisors in regard to their pensions and entitlements and...

Seanad: Public Service Broadcasting: Statements (19 Nov 2019)

Paul Gavan: It is always nice to see the Minister of State, Deputy Canney, and he is a man for whom I have great respect but to be honest, I am disappointed that the Minister, Deputy Bruton, is not here because he is the decision maker. I want to be very direct in the next point and I accept the good wishes and goodwill of everyone in terms of keeping Lyric FM in Limerick. This is a political decision...

Seanad: Illegal Drugs: Motion (13 Nov 2019)

Paul Gavan: The Minister of State is very welcome. On behalf of Sinn Féin, I welcome this motion from Fianna Fáil. It is important that as public representatives we are discussing such an important issue, particularly considering the statement issued Iast week and signed by several former Ministers with responsibility for drugs, expressing their concerns that the national drugs strategy is...

Seanad: Illegal Drugs: Motion (13 Nov 2019)

Paul Gavan: That is first-hand information. Task forces need to be able to operate and function independently of the HSE. They should continue to draft and implement local strategies in consultation with the community. There is a number of other measures that can be taken in conjunction with increasing the funding for task forces. We need to re-establish the emerging needs fund and the young person...
