- Committee on Environment, Culture and the Gaeltacht: Select Sub-Committee on the Environment, Community and Local Government: Housing (Miscellaneous Provisions) Bill 2014: Committee Stage (4 Jun 2014)
Dessie Ellis: I wish to comment on what Deputy Catherine Murphy said about the sale of houses by local authorities to tenants. I have said that the money should be ring-fenced, when I spoke on the housing Bill previously, and used to fund the purchase of new housing to add to the housing stock instead of being whittled away or used for other areas by a local authority. The revenue generated should be...
- Leaders' Questions (29 May 2014)
Dessie Ellis: That has already been done.
- Leaders' Questions (29 May 2014)
Dessie Ellis: Fantasy funding.
- Leaders' Questions (29 May 2014)
Dessie Ellis: Fine Gael people were involved in that.
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport and Communications: EU Transport Council: Minister for Transport, Tourism and Sport (28 May 2014)
Dessie Ellis: I thank the Minister for his presentation. With regard to the fourth railway package, there are issues with regard to the awarding of the PSO contracts, and a court case is outstanding in this regard. I am a little worried that PSO cutbacks and allowing other operators to take on PSO contracts will lead to further privatisation. Will the Minister comment on that? There will be a division...
- Topical Issue Debate: Industrial Disputes (27 May 2014)
Dessie Ellis: There are time factors.
- Topical Issue Debate: Industrial Disputes (27 May 2014)
Dessie Ellis: I thank the Minister for his reply. It is clear that this employer has not engaged with either the employees or the Departments. It is very clear from what the Minister said. It is outrageous that workers should be treated like this. Many of them have even left the country. Some do not have bread on the table, cannot pay their rent and are living like homeless people. It is a scandal...
- Topical Issue Debate: Industrial Disputes (27 May 2014)
Dessie Ellis: I welcome the workers and union representatives who are in the Visitors Gallery. The Paris Bakery on Moore Street has closed its doors. This type of event is always a sad occasion. People are out of work and wondering from where the next pay cheque will come or how they will pay the next bill or even put bread on the table. For the workers in the Paris Bakery these concerns have been to...
- Written Answers — Department of Education and Skills: Schools Establishment (27 May 2014)
Dessie Ellis: 251. To ask the Minister for Education and Skills further to Parliamentary Question No. 257 of 13 May 2014, the plans in place for an Educate Together secondary school for the areas Dublin 7, 9 and 11 as the Hansfield school is not an option for parents in this area. [22695/14]
- Written Answers — Department of Transport, Tourism and Sport: Proposed Legislation (27 May 2014)
Dessie Ellis: 975. To ask the Minister for Transport, Tourism and Sport the criteria required for rickshaws to operate in Dublin city centre; and the licence and insurance requirements needed. [22530/14]
- Other Questions: Local Authority Members' Remit (15 May 2014)
Dessie Ellis: One of my concerns is that many local authorities are farming out more of their work for parks, local authority housing renovation or road maintenance for different reasons. I am firmly opposed to this because in the past, when local authorities had their own workers, it worked well. Recently, Fingal County Council voted to oppose the election of a mayor for Dublin and the devolving of...
- Other Questions: Heavy Goods Vehicle Levy (15 May 2014)
Dessie Ellis: That is not the truth. There are many other issues.
- Other Questions: Heavy Goods Vehicle Levy (15 May 2014)
Dessie Ellis: It is ironic that Deputy McHugh says that Sinn Féin is not doing enough when the Minister says that Sinn Féin brought forward the motion. We have certainly been fighting this corner, have made representations and have brought this motion before the Assembly. We have made representations directly to Westminster on a number of occasions. One of the major problems we have is that...
- Other Questions: Heavy Goods Vehicle Levy (15 May 2014)
Dessie Ellis: Some areas are exempted. We have 7 km. Why can we not go the extra mile and put on extra pressure? If Secretary of State Villiers can make decisions like this, surely we can keep putting more pressure on and making representations. This is going against the Good Friday Agreement in terms of co-operation and we should keep putting pressure on and go to Europe.
- Other Questions: Heavy Goods Vehicle Levy (15 May 2014)
Dessie Ellis: If the Minister knew the job that we have been trying-----
- Other Questions: Heavy Goods Vehicle Levy (15 May 2014)
Dessie Ellis: Deputy McHugh says he was not putting on a political hat but he never stopped talking about Sinn Féin. The Minister never stops talking about Sinn Féin. The Minister knows well that a large number of different things, be they education, school meals or household charges, are included in one single charge. We do not have a myriad of extra taxes that this Government has introduced....
- Other Questions: Heavy Goods Vehicle Levy (15 May 2014)
Dessie Ellis: Our people have made representations. Once again, I am telling the Minister that these charges involving €12 per trip are costing the industry a huge amount. We must look at helping the industry. If huge costs exist, some trucks will make several trips across the Border in certain areas and this will add up over the year. Is the Minister going to do something to alleviate that?
- Other Questions: Heavy Goods Vehicle Levy (15 May 2014)
Dessie Ellis: 29. To ask the Minister for Transport, Tourism and Sport if he has sought any advice on the possibility that the HGV levy proposed by the British Government would be in breach of European competition or other business standards in view of the fact that it confers an advantage on businesses within its jurisdiction and undermines the haulage industry in neighbouring states; if not, whether he...
- Written Answers — Department of Transport, Tourism and Sport: Road Tolls (15 May 2014)
Dessie Ellis: 16. To ask the Minister for Transport, Tourism and Sport his plans to further end tolls on roads across the State following the recent toll free period initiative and comments by him that he was considering the removal of tolls levied on trucks using the Limerick tunnel. [21597/14]
- Written Answers — Department of Transport, Tourism and Sport: Taxi Regulations (15 May 2014)
Dessie Ellis: 33. To ask the Minister for Transport, Tourism and Sport if he will commit to meeting representatives of ex-political prisoners to discuss the issues arising from the distribution of letters by the National Transport Authority to those who hold SPSV licences and the potentially catastrophic effect this could have on their livelihood and their families welfare due to legislation brought in by...
