Ceisteanna - Questions (Resumed): Official Engagements (21 Oct 2014)

Joe Higgins: When the Taoiseach met Governor Brown of California in June, the Governor felt at liberty to indulge in a bit of knockabout comedy at his expense and at the expense of the corporation tax policies of the Irish Government. He said that if California could have Ireland's corporation tax rate, it would become an independent country. He said he used to think the Apple corporation was a...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Environment, Culture and the Gaeltacht: Water Tariffs: Commission for Energy Regulation (21 Oct 2014)

Other Questions: National Internship Scheme Places (21 Oct 2014)

Joe Higgins: Nobody believes that the 3,000 Gateway positions with local authorities are for any other purpose than to fill the gaps left in local authority services by the consistent underfunding of local authority services. It is cheap, yellow pack labour. Will the Minister of State, Deputy Kevin Humphreys, please answer the questions? How many public sector interns got jobs within the public sector...

Other Questions: National Internship Scheme Places (21 Oct 2014)

Joe Higgins: You have a role, a Leas-Cheann Comhairle, under the new Standing Orders to require a Minister to answer the question. Was any Department barred? Perhaps no Department has been, but the Minister of State should tell us.

Joe Higgins: Did the Minister of State say there have been 330 interns in the public sector in total since the scheme's inception?

Other Questions: National Internship Scheme Places (21 Oct 2014)

Joe Higgins: I have stated on many occasions that the internship schemes are simply for the purpose of cynically manipulating the unemployment figures to the benefit of the Government and to provide cheap labour for employers, and I want to ask the Minister of State a number of specific questions. Has the moratorium on public sector employment meant that no jobs could be offered to interns? If so, was...

Order of Business (16 Oct 2014)

Joe Higgins: The Tánaiste, in particular, should know about the poll tax.

Order of Business (16 Oct 2014)

Joe Higgins: No. The proposal is that after Private Members’ Business the order shall resume. I oppose this and propose instead that we have a debate today on the disaster that is the Government’s water charges policy. We need to have that debate because 100,000 people flooded on to the streets of Dublin last Saturday to demand, in no certain terms, that the Government abolish the water...

Order of Business (16 Oct 2014)

Joe Higgins: If the Tánaiste does not listen to the people exercising their power on the streets, perhaps she might listen to them at the ballot box. The Government, particularly the Labour Party, was eviscerated in the recent by-elections over water charges and other issues.

Order of Business (16 Oct 2014)

Joe Higgins: Under Standing Orders, I am allowed to make a short statement in opposition to the Order of Business. I am concluding.

Order of Business (16 Oct 2014)

Joe Higgins: The Tánaiste can lacerate Fianna Fáil all she wants for lack of investment in water services. However, 20 years ago when she was in government, she could have put €1 billion or €2 billion into water infrastructure. Instead, she gave a massive tax amnesty to criminal tax cheats with their offshore accounts.
