- Seanad: Order of Business. (23 Mar 2006)
Noel Coonan: I support the call by Senator Finucane for a debate on energy and ESB charges. I am not sure whether the Government will take seriously a report which cost â¬1.2 million when one considers that the Minister said that â¬143 million is not a significant figure. One wonders how he would regard a figure of â¬1.2 million. He would probably consider it to be small change which is not worth...
- Seanad: Order of Business. (22 Mar 2006)
Noel Coonan: I join in the call for a debate on transport, particularly on road freight. I am not being the devil's advocate when I say we are being unfair to the road haulage industry, which provides so much employment in rural Ireland to farmers who are working part-time. These people would be driven off the land by the policies implemented in agriculture.
- Seanad: Order of Business. (22 Mar 2006)
Noel Coonan: It is unfair for Members to pin blame for road accidents on road hauliers who are providing an excellent service.
- Seanad: Order of Business. (22 Mar 2006)
Noel Coonan: If we are having a debate on it, I wish to highlight the excellent work they do. It is unfair to suggest there is a rail freight depot in every town in Ireland.
- Seanad: Order of Business. (22 Mar 2006)
Noel Coonan: What is one to do â cherrypick towns that have depots? Road hauliers provide a good service and I wish their voice to be heard. While I support the call for the debate, it should be an all-inclusive debate rather than one that paints the issue in black and white.

Noel Coonan: I welcome the Minister of State at the Department of Finance, Deputy Parlon, and will avail of his presence to point out to him some local aspects of the decentralisation programme. He is an able Senator who one day may be charged with cleaning up the...

He informed the House of the difficulties experienced at Ballinasloe with the programme. Mention was made of FÃS...
