- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Climate Action: Carbon Budgets: Discussion (Resumed) (18 Jan 2022)
Bríd Smith: Could we get those exact figures because those figures would counter what the Environmental Protection Agency, EPA, has reported recently?
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Climate Action: Carbon Budgets: Discussion (Resumed) (18 Jan 2022)
Bríd Smith: One of my questions is on housing and retrofitting. One of my staff reminded me that the SEAI told us at an information session in late 2018 or probably 2019, she was not sure of the date, but the date she was sure of was that by July 2019, there would be no stipulation on the one home, one visit for retrofitting. In other words, if your attic was insulated 15 or 20 years previously, one...
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Climate Action: Carbon Budgets: Discussion (Resumed) (18 Jan 2022)
Bríd Smith: It is a quick question on transport. Can the 500,000 active travel increases that will happen before or around 2030 be broken down? Of those, what percentage is public transport, cycling and walking, respectively? I thank the Chairman for putting up with me.
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Climate Action: Carbon Budgets: Discussion (Resumed) (13 Jan 2022)
Bríd Smith: I thank the witnesses for their presentation. The submission states that we need to focus on how climate action on transition is understood in the sector. The submission also states that we require early policy and practice in Ireland. We have to get in there early and be inclusive and engage with those potentially impacted by decarbonisation. If I may, I want to ask questions about the...
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Climate Action: Carbon Budgets: Discussion (Resumed) (13 Jan 2022)
Bríd Smith: I thank the witnesses for the presentations. There is a lot going on today. I will ask a few questions of the IFA and Mr. Rushe. We had the scientists in yesterday who put a large dose of reality into the conversation. One of the things Professor Kevin Anderson said was there was no such thing as a universal "we" and that most people were not responsible for most emissions. I suspect...
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Climate Action: Carbon Budgets: Discussion (Resumed) (13 Jan 2022)
Bríd Smith: When Mr. Rushe went through the figures on dairy and cattle numbers, he then compared them with the rise in figures for vehicles by 75% in the same period and Dublin Airport passengers by 155%. What is the point of that comparison? If we are dealing with the agricultural sector, we have to look at it in its own right, because it stands out as being responsible for a huge amount of the...
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Climate Action: Carbon Budgets: Discussion (Resumed) (13 Jan 2022)
Bríd Smith: Only a certain sector gains from this policy. It is not the "we" all farmers. I ask the witnesses to comment on that discrepancy.
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Climate Action: Carbon Budgets: Discussion (Resumed) (12 Jan 2022)
Bríd Smith: I confirm I am on the Leinster House campus. I thank all our guests for coming to the meeting and giving us an interesting session. I found today's discussion much more about the urgency of the situation we are facing than the discussion yesterday, which I was unable to participate in. I do not criticise the committee for a lack of urgency yesterday. The problem is the framework under...
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Climate Action: Carbon Budgets: Discussion (Resumed) (12 Jan 2022)
Bríd Smith: I will wind up shortly. Despite the Covid restrictions, public transport should be an absolute priority. My final question is for Professor Sweeney. He mentioned the €2.4 billion in subsidies to the fossil fuel industry. Most people would be quite shocked to learn that figure. Will he quickly explain to us how that figure breaks down? I do not want a big mathematical...
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Climate Action: Carbon Budgets: Discussion (Resumed) (12 Jan 2022)
Bríd Smith: Yes, if anybody wants to take that. It was in respect of what Professor Anderson said about how most people do not create most emissions and how we deal with that. The committee has discussed this. Even in Covid times, we could start planning for proper, frequent and, ultimately, free public transport across this tiny island.
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Climate Action: Carbon Budgets: Discussion (Resumed) (12 Jan 2022)
Bríd Smith: I thank Professor Anderson.
- Ceisteanna (Atógáil) - Questions (Resumed) - Ceisteanna Eile - Other Questions: Pension Provisions (16 Dec 2021)
Bríd Smith: I was told it would be confirmed in September. I have asked about this matter five time this year.
- Ceisteanna (Atógáil) - Questions (Resumed) - Ceisteanna Eile - Other Questions: Pension Provisions (16 Dec 2021)
Bríd Smith: The change would mean €30 a week to a CIÉ worker. It is not a patch on the pension the Minister of State or other Ministers will get. This is not good enough.
- Ceisteanna (Atógáil) - Questions (Resumed) - Ceisteanna Eile - Other Questions: Pension Provisions (16 Dec 2021)
Bríd Smith: We are treating workers with disdain and disgust. That statutory instrument should have been signed off earlier this year and it needs to be done as soon as possible.
- Ceisteanna (Atógáil) - Questions (Resumed) - Ceisteanna Eile - Other Questions: Pension Provisions (16 Dec 2021)
Bríd Smith: 13. To ask the Minister for Transport, Tourism and Sport if assurances can be provided to CIÉ workers in the regular wages scheme who have retired since June 2020 that the delay in his signing the statutory instrument to give effect to changes in the regular wages pension scheme will not result in them losing any of the improved benefits or lump sums once the statutory instrument is...
- Ceisteanna (Atógáil) - Questions (Resumed) - Ceisteanna Eile - Other Questions: Pension Provisions (16 Dec 2021)
Bríd Smith: I thank Deputy Duncan Smith for allowing me to raise this important issue as we hurtle towards Christmas. I think five times this year I have asked the Minister for Transport if and when he will sign the statutory instrument that will allow for an improved pension for CIÉ workers. Currently a CIÉ worker takes home a pension of €130 per week. If the Minister signed the...
- Written Answers — Department of Transport, Tourism and Sport: Bus Services (16 Dec 2021)
Bríd Smith: 25. To ask the Minister for Transport, Tourism and Sport if his attention has been drawn to the fact that as a result of criteria laid down by the NTA, bus drivers on some routes in the Dublin Bus network are being instructed to wait at specific locations en route and to drive at reduced speeds, regardless of the prevailing traffic volumes, and that this is resulting in delays for passengers...
- Written Answers — Department of Transport, Tourism and Sport: Bus Services (16 Dec 2021)
Bríd Smith: 79. To ask the Minister for Transport, Tourism and Sport if his attention has been drawn to the fact that Dublin Bus has informed drivers on certain routes that the NTA may tender out their route as a result of the failure of that route to reach NTA-determined criteria and that such criteria, as laid down in the contracts with Dublin Bus, seem incapable of reflecting or adapting to prevailing...
- Written Answers — Department of Transport, Tourism and Sport: Bus Services (16 Dec 2021)
Bríd Smith: 44. To ask the Minister for Transport, Tourism and Sport if a commitment will be made to the implementation of the full plan on BusConnects and in particular the infrastructure for connectivity of Chapelizod Village, Dublin 8; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [62350/21]
- Written Answers — Department of Education and Skills: Youth Services (16 Dec 2021)
Bríd Smith: 463. To ask the Minister for Education and Skills his plans to resource Youthreach education amid a staffing crisis that is leaving the most vulnerable young persons at risk; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [62450/21]
