Seanad: An tOrd Gnó - Order of Business (11 Jul 2019)

Maire Devine: I have a comment for Senator Craughwell. On my wedding night, in my wedding car with my new husband, the UDR took me out at gunpoint and went through every single present from my wedding day. The nationalist population, or whatever term the Senator wants to use, finds that the name of the UDR sticks in the craw. However, I commend the Senator and wish him the best of luck. We need to...

Seanad: An tOrd Gnó - Order of Business (11 Jul 2019)

Maire Devine: Hear, hear.

Seanad: CervicalCheck Tribunal Bill 2019: Second Stage (11 Jul 2019)

Maire Devine: I welcome the Bill. I wish we had extra time, especially given the extremely tight turnaround time between Second Stage and all other Stages which are due to be taken tomorrow. That barely gives the House enough time to draw breath, let alone consider amendments. However, as I would prefer to see the Bill passed in some form, rather than not, I welcome it. The entire country was deeply...

Seanad: An tOrd Gnó - Order of Business (10 Jul 2019)

Maire Devine: Well said.

Seanad: An tOrd Gnó - Order of Business (10 Jul 2019)

Maire Devine: That is a novel and interesting piece of research which I am sure we will bring to the climate action committee. I propose an amendment to amend the Order of Business to take No. 13 before No. 1. The Assisted Decision-Making (Capacity) (Amendment) Act 2015 established several new legal provisions to address issues of consent and capacity in the provision of healthcare treatments. One such...

Seanad: Assisted Decision-Making (Capacity) (Amendment) Bill 2019: First Stage (10 Jul 2019)

Seanad: Assisted Decision-Making (Capacity) (Amendment) Bill 2019: First Stage (10 Jul 2019)

Maire Devine: That is difficult to know. It would usually be Tuesday, but could I say Wednesday?

Seanad: Assisted Decision-Making (Capacity) (Amendment) Bill 2019: First Stage (10 Jul 2019)

Maire Devine: Is that next Tuesday?

Maire Devine: Hear, hear.

Seanad: Genetic Testing: Motion (10 Jul 2019)

Maire Devine: Cuirim fáilte roimh an Aire Stáit. I welcome the motion and I am proud to speak on behalf of Sinn Féin. I thank Senator Norris for extending the opportunity to add my name to this very worthy motion. The issue has already been discussed in the Lower House, where a Sinn Féin amendment to a motion included a call for a newborn screening test. In this State newborn babies...

Seanad: Genetic Testing: Motion (10 Jul 2019)

Maire Devine: It is a rite of passage for the mother as well as the child.

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Climate Action: Housing and Retrofitting: Discussion (10 Jul 2019)

Maire Devine: I am talking about retrofit that is purely residential. There is the shallow one and then there is the deep retrofit. Could I get a breakdown of the figures for shallow retrofit versus deep retrofit? Some colleagues have rightly said that when people hear that it might cost €40,000 or €50,000, they shy away. It is almost like breaking it down into chunks and explaining to...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Climate Action: Housing and Retrofitting: Discussion (10 Jul 2019)

Maire Devine: Insurance costs have skyrocketed on the back of this insulation material. My area of Dublin 12 was part of the warmer homes pilot scheme. One sees a lot of activity but people have complained that the insurance has skyrocketed. They find it more difficult to get reasonable insurance compared to what they had previously.
