Seanad: An tOrd Gnó - Order of Business (16 Apr 2019)

Marie Louise O'Donnell: The first thing I would like to do is send out some kind of energy, even from a small space, to France and the beautiful Notre-Dame de Paris, which was up in flames last night. It reminded me of the great line by Milton from "Paradise Lost", because if I ever witnessed awe in my life, I witnessed it in Notre-Dame. I also witnessed reverence. I witnessed reverence from all walks of life and...

Seanad: An tOrd Gnó - Order of Business (16 Apr 2019)

Marie Louise O'Donnell: They are not going to restore trust in me, although I do not know about the young people. They are a joke. They brought us into the red even though they are now back in the black. There is no one there. I was in a bank yesterday but I had to talk to machines. If they are going to restore my faith in machines, it is not going to happen. I very much believe the people have to stand up...

Seanad: An tOrd Gnó - Order of Business (10 Apr 2019)

Marie Louise O'Donnell: I wish to alert Senators, Deputies and councillors around the country that we have a significant problem with healthcare assistants. The reason for this problem is that we do not have enough of them and the reason we do not have enough of them is because they cannot come to this country under what we call critical skills, which involves eligibility to come and work here. There is a lack of...

Seanad: Civil Liability (Capping of General Damages Bill) 2019: Second Stage (28 Mar 2019)

Marie Louise O'Donnell: This is a disgrace.

Seanad: Civil Liability (Capping of General Damages Bill) 2019: Second Stage (28 Mar 2019)

Marie Louise O'Donnell: I welcome the Minister to the House. I thank Senator Lawlor for bringing this Bill before us. I am sure he is absolutely delighted that the Seanad is still here. I remember him arguing violently and viably that it should be closed. If it had been closed, he might not have had a platform for the introduction of this legislation. I give the Bill a general welcome because I think manners,...

Seanad: Civil Liability (Capping of General Damages Bill) 2019: Second Stage (28 Mar 2019)

Marie Louise O'Donnell: On a point of order, I never mentioned democracy and nor did I exclude this excellent beginnings of a Bill from it.

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Justice, Defence and Equality: Scrutiny of the Civil Liability (Amendment) (Prevention of Benefits from Homicide) Bill 2017 (27 Mar 2019)

Marie Louise O'Donnell: I am fine.

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Justice, Defence and Equality: Scrutiny of the Civil Liability (Amendment) (Prevention of Benefits from Homicide) Bill 2017 (27 Mar 2019)

Marie Louise O'Donnell: I want to make some general comments. I have a lack of knowledge of the law until it applies at my front door. I know Mr. Byrne possibly had a lack of knowledge of the law until it came to his front door, as was the case with Ms Deane. I am a patron of AdVIC which is one of the correct things I have done since I came to the Seanad because I have learned what happens to people, from parole...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Justice, Defence and Equality: Scrutiny of the Civil Liability (Amendment) (Prevention of Benefits from Homicide) Bill 2017 (27 Mar 2019)

Marie Louise O'Donnell: I would like to make one further comment. Victims are very fragile sometimes and killers have great energy, chaos has great energy, and the victims get silenced all the time. The energy, the push, the language and the law sometimes seem to be behind the perpetrators. I am talking about convicted first degree murderers. I am not talking about fatal assault or even manslaughter. Those are...

Seanad: An tOrd Gnó - Order of Business (26 Feb 2019)

Marie Louise O'Donnell: There has been a lot of talk recently about housing and I am looking forward to the launch of a report tomorrow on housing for the elderly, in particular. There has been a lot of talk about new retirement villages, a term I do not particularly like, but we will have to wait until tomorrow to see what happens at the launch of the report by the Minister. We must focus on health care...

Seanad: An tOrd Gnó - Order of Business (26 Feb 2019)

Marie Louise O'Donnell: I do not see it. I do not mind if Members are listening to me or not, but if they are on their phones, writing letters and so on, they are not necessarily listening to anybody.

Seanad: An tOrd Gnó - Order of Business (26 Feb 2019)

Marie Louise O'Donnell: I was not referring to Senator Lawlor, in particular.

Seanad: An tOrd Gnó - Order of Business (26 Feb 2019)

Marie Louise O'Donnell: It is very serious. We are talking about retirement villages, nursing homes, care packages and care in the home, but we are not talking about the quality and quantity of those who do the caring. We are living in Utopia in building rockets with nowhere to land them. My point is carers are not deemed to have "critical" skills such that they cannot apply to come here from non-EU countries....
