Seanad: Order of Business (16 Nov 2010)

Dan Boyle: It undoubtedly is true that the present situation facing the country is very serious. On one level, all Members should offer whatever support they can to the Minister for Finance in the two meetings that are taking place in Brussels today, namely, the euro group meeting and the ECOFIN Ministers' meeting. The country has been coming under enormous pressure that has been fuelled by...

Seanad: Order of Business (16 Nov 2010)

Dan Boyle: This must be acknowledged in the first instance. The quality of the reporting, including reporting things as happening that have not happened or predicting things that will happen but that have yet to happen, does little for the quality of the truth that is required to deal with the crisis in which we face ourselves. More importantly, on the issue of governance, if a use must made of the...

Seanad: Overcrowding in Prisons: Statements (Resumed). (11 Nov 2010)

Dan Boyle: It is fortunate that we have had an opportunity to extend the debate, as the first discussion was followed by the Minister's statement and an indication of substantial change in Government policy. It has also been followed by a significant statement in the UK, where the justice Minister recently announced the closure of six prisons. While the reasons behind such decisions in many countries...

Seanad: Order of Business (11 Nov 2010)

Dan Boyle: The use of the phrase "our very survival as a State" is part of the problem we have at the moment in political discourse. We need to pause for reflection. Yesterday evening, the website of The Guardian ran a story stating that a decision had already been made that the International Monetary Fund was to make decisions for this country as of today. Much of the information on international...

Seanad: Order of Business (9 Nov 2010)

Dan Boyle: I represented my party in a series of meetings held by Commissioner Rehn this morning and heard clearly what he was saying. I presume he said the same thing to all of the political parties. He stressed the need for consensus. I am sorry if I am breaking a principle, but I disagree with what Senator Alex White said. My understanding of consensus is not, "You tell us what you are going to...

Seanad: Order of Business (9 Nov 2010)

Dan Boyle: The message from Commissioner Rehn was there was a need for structural changes to bring us into line with more sustainable economies in the European Union. On these grounds, we need to have a wider debate. As regards the budgetary process, suggestions are being made about public sector reform. I agree with what Senator O'Toole said, particularly about the interesting Fine Gael document...

Seanad: Order of Business (9 Nov 2010)

Dan Boyle: The Senator has the wrong definition.

Seanad: Order of Business (9 Nov 2010)

Dan Boyle: The Senator is no stranger to steamroller politics either.

Seanad: Order of Business (9 Nov 2010)

Dan Boyle: People are listening.

Seanad: Order of Business (9 Nov 2010)

Dan Boyle: It is not mine.

Seanad: Order of Business (4 Nov 2010)

Dan Boyle: The decision yesterday by the High Court demanded a response and I am glad the Cabinet took the opportunity to make an appropriate one. There is no pride in denying the people of Donegal South-West a by-election for 18 months. I am on record as having said that period was too long. It exceeds the previous record set in 1994 after a Fianna Fáil-Labour Party Government had refused to hold...

Seanad: Order of Business (4 Nov 2010)

Dan Boyle: The three by-elections will be held by the end of March. It has always been the intention of the Government to hold them together, with a wider electoral contest, to save as much money as possible. The wider electoral contest will either be the referendum on children's rights or the election of a mayor of Dublin. That remains the policy position and it will be acted upon. I am trying to...

Seanad: Order of Business (4 Nov 2010)

Dan Boyle: It does.

Seanad: Order of Business (4 Nov 2010)

Dan Boyle: I will point to very obvious examples where this has caused tremendous heartache for people. I refer to education-related cases such as the O'Donoghue case and the Sinnott case and health-related cases such as those involving those who had contracted hepatitis C. These cases were taken by other Governments of other compositions. It is an established practice.

Seanad: Order of Business (4 Nov 2010)

Dan Boyle: In respect of what Standing Order?

Seanad: Order of Business (4 Nov 2010)

Dan Boyle: May I make a second point? With regard to the vote last night, the views of this House need to be respected and responded to. This needs to be done as quickly as possible. I will play whatever role I can as a Member on the Government side in bringing the matter before the House as quickly as possible.

Seanad: Business of Seanad (3 Nov 2010)

Dan Boyle: If the Minister of State is receptive, I ask that the House should return for a wider debate as many Members would like the opportunity to speak in more detail.

Seanad: Business of Seanad (3 Nov 2010)

Dan Boyle: I propose that the debate should continue until 2 p.m. and resume at some other time.

Seanad: Overcrowding in Prisons: Statements (Resumed) (3 Nov 2010)

Dan Boyle: On those grounds, may I cede the speaking slot to Senator McDonald? If that is in order, I will return to the debate on its resumption.

Seanad: Order of Business (3 Nov 2010)

Dan Boyle: It happened in last year's budget.
