Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport, Tourism and Sport: Motor Insurance and Uninsured Drivers: Motor Insurers' Bureau of Ireland (8 Mar 2023)

Ruairí Ó Murchú: I was going to ask about that.

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport, Tourism and Sport: Motor Insurance and Uninsured Drivers: Motor Insurers' Bureau of Ireland (8 Mar 2023)

Ruairí Ó Murchú: How much is the MIBI getting?

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport, Tourism and Sport: Motor Insurance and Uninsured Drivers: Motor Insurers' Bureau of Ireland (8 Mar 2023)

Ruairí Ó Murchú: I imagine that they sometimes do not and that the MIBI has to take them to court.

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport, Tourism and Sport: Motor Insurance and Uninsured Drivers: Motor Insurers' Bureau of Ireland (8 Mar 2023)

Ruairí Ó Murchú: Does Mr. O'Brien have any idea how much it costs to get that €500,000?

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport, Tourism and Sport: Motor Insurance and Uninsured Drivers: Motor Insurers' Bureau of Ireland (8 Mar 2023)

Ruairí Ó Murchú: I am not giving out about it. The law is set up as it is, and the costs are the costs. I assume due diligence is done in order the MIBI gets the best bang for its buck. However, the fact is we are paying out €70 million and getting €500,000 back. Mr. O'Brien states that even this is at a cost of about €250,000.

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport, Tourism and Sport: Motor Insurance and Uninsured Drivers: Motor Insurers' Bureau of Ireland (8 Mar 2023)

Ruairí Ó Murchú: I will finish up shortly. I appreciate the over and back with the witnesses. We need to look at those figures in the context of what happens. We need to ensure that whether it is enforcement or the piece that needs to be done when it comes to ridiculous insurance prices, it all needs to be done because we need to facilitate people so they can afford to put a car on the road, have it taxed...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport, Tourism and Sport: Motor Insurance and Uninsured Drivers: Motor Insurers' Bureau of Ireland (8 Mar 2023)

Ruairí Ó Murchú: With good manners, we would need a lot less rules.

Ceisteanna Eile - Other Questions: Insurance Industry (7 Mar 2023)

Ruairí Ó Murchú: I thank the Minister of State. In fairness, we are in a better place than we were, although I could argue that we should have reached here earlier. We could all point to examples. There is a community centre in my constituency that was being charged €11,000. A claim could be made against three organisations – the community centre, a company and a community organisation -...

Ceisteanna Eile - Other Questions: Insurance Industry (7 Mar 2023)

Ruairí Ó Murchú: We just need to see more, better, faster, quicker. The onus is on the Government to ensure that the conditions are as good as they can be-----

Ceisteanna Eile - Other Questions: Insurance Industry (7 Mar 2023)

Ruairí Ó Murchú: -----for more insurers to enter the industry. Be they community organisations, businesses or community centres, a large number of people have been under significant pressure for a considerable amount of time. Because of GoFundMe, the generosity of people and the fact that part of this happened before we entered the cost-of-living crisis, some of them were able to get through the gap. ...

Ceisteanna Eile - Other Questions: Insurance Industry (7 Mar 2023)

Ruairí Ó Murchú: 63. To ask the Minister for Finance if he will provide an update on the work of the Office to Promote Competition in the Insurance Market; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [10256/23]

Ceisteanna Eile - Other Questions: Insurance Industry (7 Mar 2023)

Ruairí Ó Murchú: I would appreciate it if the Minister could provide an update on the work of the Office to Promote Competition in the Insurance Market. I am talking specifically about the difficulties that exist as regards public liability insurance. There are a large number of community organisations - community centres - that either cannot get insurance or are offered ridiculous premiums. We know what...

High Energy Costs: Motion [Private Members] (7 Mar 2023)

Ruairí Ó Murchú: International oil and gas prices have fallen and the Government has spoken about how it would at this stage have expected energy companies to pass that on. There is talk of engagement and ministerial discussions with energy companies, but we are going to have to see action given how under pressure families are. Households have been left to try to find the money to pay unaffordable bills....

Environmental Protection Agency (Emergency Electricity Generation) (Amendment) Bill 2023: Second Stage (7 Mar 2023)

Ruairí Ó Murchú: We are back dealing with this issue. I think I said before that we have a number of energy crises. We have the situation created by the Russian invasion of Ukraine and we have particular issues containing and controlling the energy providers. We are finally having a proper conversation about windfall taxes and the actions that are absolutely necessary to ensure there is a bit of order and...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Autism: Services and Supports Provided by the State for Autistic People: Discussion (Resumed) (7 Mar 2023)

Ruairí Ó Murchú: I apologise if I look ignorant for leaving straight after this. I was meant to be somewhere 15 minutes ago but that is the story of my life. It is not shocking, but it is frightening when we talk about access to care and lifelong impact for autistic people. The detrimental impact of waiting to get regular healthcare has been laid out. It almost fits into the idea of universal design, but...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Autism: Services and Supports Provided by the State for Autistic People: Discussion (Resumed) (7 Mar 2023)

Ruairí Ó Murchú: All present deal with issues encountered by people who get moneys, albeit sometimes insufficient moneys, approved for adaptation grants but the house is not fit to be altered or there are significant logistical difficulties in meeting the criteria. I am telling the witnesses what they already know.

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Autism: Services and Supports Provided by the State for Autistic People: Discussion (Resumed) (7 Mar 2023)

Ruairí Ó Murchú: That is a given. When Dr. Doherty outlines the issue relating to credibility, it is very obvious, but one can see why people choose not disclose. There was reference to mental health services. In the context of interventions, a problem is that even where a person, such as an autistic kid in particular, is able to avail of services, if there is a need for an issue relating to anxiety, for...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Autism: Services and Supports Provided by the State for Autistic People: Discussion (Resumed) (7 Mar 2023)

Ruairí Ó Murchú: There is also the fact that, in the context of early interventions, a minor intervention could have a significant impact. That contrasts with the usual approach, which is to wait until the situation becomes a disaster and blows up.

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Autism: Services and Supports Provided by the State for Autistic People: Discussion (Resumed) (7 Mar 2023)

Ruairí Ó Murchú: I thank the witnesses. I have definitely got my money's worth and am now going to run. I apologise for having to leave.

Written Answers — Department of Finance: Tax Credits (7 Mar 2023)

Ruairí Ó Murchú: 101. To ask the Minister for Finance if he will provide an update on the number of persons who have availed of the new rent tax credit since it was introduced; the number awarded the credit who provided an RTB registration number in their application compared with those who have not; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [10257/23]
